Gemini II
The Nine of Swords/Decan 8 of 36/ May 31 - June 10
Mars intensifies the Mercurial Mind
Gemini II: 31 May - 10 June 10°00’ - 19°59’ Gemini
To open this new decan scene, here’s a little musical number. Listen to this story:
This video is an artistic interpretation of Aristophanes’ vocalization from Plato’s Symposium around the concept of Eros. It’s so catchy. It describes humans as once consisting as a single being with two sets of everything a human has (legs, arms, faces, genitalia). We were all once twins. Aristophanes described how Zeus severed each human in half with his signature lightning bolts. This was punishment for becoming too powerful and appearing to challenge the gods. This act seems so cruel: to sever us from ourselves causing a lifetime quest to repair that cosmic injury. Eros, Aristophanes argues, is not a god but a personal force. It is our desire to be returned to our other half so that we can become complete. The lightning bolt severance speaks to the power of Mars. Eros and the desire to find the other speaks to the duality of The Lovers
If we consider Gemini as a mutable sign, the first one we’ve encountered in this decan walk, consider the symbolism reflected loudly in this decan. Mutable signs are also called “double bodied” signs: The Twins of Gemini, the two fishes of Pisces, the Centaur of Sagittarius and the early depictions of Virgo are a Woman with Bird wings. All mutable signs have a changeability in their description, it is a characteristic of these moments as the light changes.
This decan of Gemini is the middle way in the decan story. One decan on each side, during a time of transition, this decan is split by the forces around it. As the light ascends towards the end of Gemini III to the Solstice of Cancer I, there is a drive for the light to climb higher. This time brings up uncertainty, second guessing, doubt and insomnia during a dark night of the soul. Does the image below look familiar? I pulled it once the morning after having a dream about a cat I’d recently lost to feline leukemia. I woke up from the dream in tears and just sat in my bed, sobbing. That morning, I pulled the card and recognized myself in that pain. This decan and card show us the deep cuts our hearts & minds experience. The pain is not isolated, it is a reminder that we are connected because we love. We are the Lovers.
Gemini II:
Tarot card: Nine of Swords
Gemini II
Planetary Ruler: Mercury
Decan Ruler: Mars
Remember: Decans are a 10 day “week” and at some point during that decan/week if you take the time to honor the things you’re noticing, that is all that is asked of you. Stay calm and keep walking.
Gemini II is anxious, fervent, obsessive, conscious, comedic and paradoxical
Austin Coppock names it “The Hermaphrodite”
The Golden Dawn titled it “Cruelty”
Teucer of Babylon writes of the second decan of Gemini: “He will have an unsuitable marriage and it signifies the endurance of armies”
The Tower (Mars) & The Lovers (Gemini)
Decan Transit:
Mars will travel 09°20’ to 17°02’ in Taurus where it doesn’t make a lot of tight aspects with the other planets. The Moon, of course, will make a few connections: The Capricorn Moon will trine Mars on June 2, the Aqua Moon will square Mars on June 5 and the Pisces Moon will sextile Mars on June 8. Other than the lunar touches, Mars will simply be making whole sign aspects to planets. It is separating from a square with Aquarius Pluto & engaged in a sextile to Jupiter, Venus & Mercury. Both of those connections are fairly wide orbs though.
Natal Chart Consideration:
In your own chart, look to see if you have any planets or points in 10°00' - 19°59’ Gemini. The Sun will be traveling through & activating these degrees. Also consider if you have your natal Mars in aspect to 10°00’ - 19°59’ Gemini: Mars in Sagittarius will oppose the Sun; Mars in Libra & Aquarius will trine the Sun; Mars in Virgo & Pisces will square the Sun; Mars in Aries & Leo will sextile the Sun.
Personal Work:
If you’re writing during this decan, here are some journal prompts for this mental crossroads moment in the decan story:
Have you ever found yourself in the position of the person depicted on the card? Do you identify with that body language or the swords hanging over your head?
If you have one thing that is heaviest in your mind, can you break it into nine steps towards resolution?
If you followed the prompts from Gemini I then look at the last question about the 12 Truths. Do any of those truths help you with finding completion, resolution or healing with the heaviest thing on your mind today?
For further connection to Mars, as the decan ruler, you can focus your practice on the Mars’ Day (Tuesday) & Mars’ Hour. June 2nd & June 9th are the two Mars days during this decan but you can work within Mars’ hours on any day. Find the planetary hours for your location with this link: Planetary Hours Calculator Link
Bonus points for choosing Mars’ hour ON their day for a special honor. They like sharp blades and red things, cactus, thistles, needles and matches. They also want you to mean it.
