Welcome to The Direct Democracy Movement

Imagine a world where your voice truly matters. A world where voters, not politicians, decide the laws and policies that shape their future. We, the Direct Democracy Movement, believe in empowering people to take control of their governance through transparent, inclusive, and effective direct democracy systems.

How Direct Democracy Can Be Implemented in Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Proposed direct democracy processes considered for integration into a Great Britain and Northern Ireland hybrid system that combines part-representative and part-direct democracy elements. This approach aims to enhance electorate participation while retaining aspects of traditional governance.

This chart is a model that demonstrates the proposed Direct Democracy processes that can be incorporated into our current representative system. The final model will be that decided upon by the people, ensuring that the vast majority will willingly defend, comply with, and support their system of democracy – unlike today.

Switzerland scores 'Excellent'. Britain scores 'Average'.

The Swiss hybrid system was adopted in 1848, with the electorate now voting around four times a year: the Swiss believe that this direct control is the main reason for their civic cohesion and their impressive economic performance. They also top the list of voters most content with their system, scoring as high as 75%, whilst the UK lingers at 42%, equalling the global average.

I am quite certain that once established the Referendum would never be got rid of by anything short of a revolution.

Developments

Nigel Farage talks about Switzerland and direct democracy (see from 5.30 to 9.55). Great to see, even if the usual weak arguments are put forward by the guests. Our most iconic constitutional lawyer, the Victorian A V Dicey, not only backed referendums, he said that their systematic use negated the requirement for the House of Lords! Cummon Reform UK!, grasp the nettle and go for it, “Damn the torpedoes!” The petition shows the way.

The Swiss just had their civilised round of quarterly referendums last week, and rejected 3 of the 4 government proposals – if my memory serves me right. Did the Swiss fight on the streets? No, some just moaned over their spiced lattes. Revolt over. Speaking of civilised, our civilisation is in good part based on the Greco-Roman world. BOTH relied on direct democracy. The Romans built 50,000 miles of paved and cemented roads, but after the collapse of their world no such roads were built for over 1,000 years. The secret to a better way forward for all of us politically is in real democracy. It’s not just about the great example that the Swiss make today, it’s about the base on which our civilisation rests.

May 2025 - Local Elections  : Allan Shipman, elected as a Direct Democracy Councillor into Wellingborough Town Council.

People in the UK are now ready to reject the government’s hard power control tactics as a means of governing the country. The UK’s Government hasn’t been considering the views of its people, which they are meant to represent, for a very long time, most recently proven throughout the Covid-19 crisis.

Experience has shown that democracy is enhanced when the electorate is directly involved in making policy decisions, inputting, learning and self-correcting as they go. Referendums and Initiatives allow voters to address matters that the parties might prefer not to, often out of self-interest or to avoid “controversy”.

Welcome to our Books page, a dedicated resource for exploring the principles, challenges, and opportunities of direct democracy. Here, you'll find a carefully selected collection of titles that delve into the history, theory, and practical application of this empowering form of governance.

This selection of videos archives recent progress made with the campaign's agenda of eventually replacing representative democracy with direct democracy in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Are you ready to take a stand for fairness, and a truly representative system? At the Direct Democracy Movement, we believe in putting power directly in the hands of the people—where every voice matters and every decision counts.

A growing number of nations and localities recognise the benefits that voters bring to their policy-making process and have adopted direct democracy. In general, they retain the existing representative system to “manage” day-to-day matters, but also use three tried, tested and simple voting tools to top-up the half-full democracy tank. These are:
