Aether creates spatial unity by arranging letters into a harmonious pattern. It is derived from the invention of “Self-Spacing Type”, a system of predetermined character widths developed in 1883 by Linn Boyd Benton to streamline typesetting by reducing justification time; a groundbreaking approach that influenced later Linotype technology. By integrating a fixed set of shapes within this horizontal framework, Aether divides space with a consistent intervals of stems, resulting in a cohesive and rational appearance.
The typeface family includes two stylistic variations that highlight its parametric design: Aether A, without optical adjustments, features dark, prominent brackets and joints for a bold, striking look, while Aether B incorporates optical adjustments for enhanced legibility and a refined aesthetic. A set of alternate characters further enhances the geometric appearance, and a wide range of ligatures harmonizes spacing in mono-spaced columns. Additional OT-features, provide versatility for diverse typographic applications.

The cadence-unit system ensures harmonic proportions.

The letter /n sets the space within and between letters, establishing a rhythmic stem interval.
