Books, Words & Lists – What’s Not To Love?

Have you discovered Top Ten Tuesday (TTT)? It’s a weekly blog post project at That Artsy Reader Girl that provides topics to make your own Top Ten list.

Okay, I’m going to go back to creating my own list now. I have lists all over my house – on scraps of paper, colorful post-it notes and whole sheets of paper.

What do you make lists about?

Do You Love Martial Arts Movies?

It’s been awhile since I posted about my love for martial arts movies. Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Maggie Cheung and Michelle Yeoh are some of my all-time favorite stars. I know everyone will recognize names such as Bruce Lee, Jet Li and Jackie Chan but the other three may not be well-known to non-martial-arts-movies-loving people, so here are photos:

Donnie Yen

Michelle Yeoh

5 Valentine’s Day Gifts Even Better Than Flowers & Candy

Valentine’s Day, time to conform to the Valentine’s Day traditions and give chocolates and roses to your sweetheart.

red roses

But is it? Are you a conformist or do you like to shake things up a bit? Maybe your sweetheart is the one who loves being unique and unconventional? Either way, here are 5 ideas of “nontraditional” Valentine’s Day gifts:

  1. Spa Treatment – If your sweetie loves to be pampered, what better way than with a massage, facial or whatever at your local spa. Most spas will be offering specials and sales around this time. Win-win!
  2. Dinner In – If you don’t like waiting an hour for a table at a restaurant, why not take advantage of the modern approach of curbside pickup? You still get the three course meal but in a more intimate setting to spike up the romance 🙂  candlelight dinner
  3. Donation to Charity – Show your love by giving to someone else in your sweetheart’s name. Pick something they are passionate about (oceans, parks, children, medical research, etc.) and give. This is also a win-win!
  4. Entertainment – Is your sweetheart into sports events, concerts or cultural events? Tickets for one of these events could put a big smile on your sweetheart’s face and points on your love-meter.  red lips on envelope
  5. Volunteer – This one doesn’t cost you anything but your time. Show your love for your fellow-man or animal by volunteering a few hours at a soup kitchen, at your local shelter to play with the animals or to collect for a food drive. Another win-win situation.  kittens

So tell me – are you a conformist? What non-traditional gifts have you received or given?

I’d love to hear about it!

Here’s wishing everyone a very loving Valentine’s Day.romantic couple

What?

Chinese New Year 2019!

Chinese New Year

Tuesday, February 5th begins the Year of the Pig

Not Chinese? Doesn’t matter. I like to have tacos on Cinco de Mayo but I’m not Hispanic. I love pierogies even though I’m not Polish. So, I like to celebrate Chinese New Year even though I’m not Chinese. And you can too.

Fireworks are set off at midnight on Chinese New Year’s Eve to “ward off monsters” and bad luck. Then are set off again in the morning to welcome the new year and good luck. I love fireworks!

You get to eat dumplings and/or spring rolls. Yum!

Lots of red decorations. I love the color of red 🙂

During the festival it is taboo to sweep or clean! Ha, a reason not to clean. What’s better than that? You don’t want to sweep away your good fortune.

I also enjoy decorating with Feng Shui in mind. Not familiar with Feng Shui? Check out this link and this link.

2019 – A Fresh New Year

Do you have disappointments, regrets and missed opportunities from 2018 bringing you down? We all fail at our resolutions, fall short of a goal or regret a missed opportunity, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Brush it off and stand up straight because you have a whole new year in front of you and a fresh start with 2019.

2019 New Year's

Give yourself a few minutes to recall positive moments and goals from 2018…

  • I finished writing my second romance novel and began querying for representation and publication.
  • I created my plot/timeline for book #3. plot line storyboard
  • I began creating my new office/library/craft room.
  • I discovered some new, healthy recipes.
  • I completed my 2018 Goodreads Reading Challenge goal of 48 books.
  • Both of my sons are now living down in NC with us. North Carolina State Line Sign

Good for you!

Now, set some goals and inspirations for 2019…

  • I want to complete a second draft of my third book.
  • I want to gain a contract for book #2.
  • I will begin querying for a reprint of my 1st book (Hong Kong Treasure – publisher closed within a year of its publication). Hong Kong Treasure
  • I will complete my 2019 Goodreads Reading Challenge goal of 50 books.
  • I will limit my consumption of sugar, dairy and wheat.

Great! Now don’t let any doubt and negativity creep in. Fight it. Start each day with positive thoughts and energy. Remember, you are a great you. Don’t let anyone tell you different. You can shine in 2019!

Beauty After Breast Cancer

A powerful post about beauty after breast cancer. Do breasts alone determine our beauty? Are women less feminine without them? What are your thoughts?

Aimee Eddy's avatar

Beauty is more than a skinny body, fancy clothes, and makeup. Going through cancer can put your body through harsh treatments and sometimes multiple surgeries. Some lose their hair, some have only the spot where the cancer is removed, and some have both breasts removed. Radiation and chemotherapy are harsh treatments. Going through these treatments and surgeries can make you feel ugly and less like a woman.

When I was given the choice to have a mastectomy, I thought I had to have reconstruction to keep my beauty. I thought I’d be less of a woman without breasts. After the surgery it took me a while to look at my chest or look at myself shirtless in a mirror. I was afraid to see the scars where my breasts used to be. I was afraid I would look ugly and disfigured. When I finally looked at my chest, I cried.
