The team at Google has started a tradition of using an online minigame to hype the announcement of I/O, their annual developers conference. This year's game was a series of logic puzzles featuring mirrors, prisms, lasers and lanterns.
I was brought in as part of a much larger team on this project, the mini game and accompanying site required a ton of assets, built and designed by many talented hands. Fellow freelancer Charlottte Lucas handled the majority of assets for the game itself.
My focus was primarily the date reveal video (shown above). I handled that from start to finish, pulling in pre-approved assets from the client, and developing a look and feel for the fully rendered laser world. The video would play after the user solved the final puzzle and the I/O date would be revealed.
I also helped out with several web elements for various landing pages on the mini game site. These assets were all meticulously keyframed for perfect seamless loops and then exported at a variety of formats. We used lottie files in some cases, which are a JSON-based animation file format that allow for tiny file sizes that can be scaled up or down with no pixelation.
I think a big goal for these date reveal mini games is to drum up buzz and press for the upcoming event. The year’s game definitely did that! Check out some of the work featured in the news articles below.
