target="_blank" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Dreamwidth, beginning May 1.

You may create a free account with Dreamwidth here. You may also choose to continue with OpenID from LiveJournal, but as has been pointed out in the comments below there's no single-login connection from Facebook or Google properties. Many of you will know already that this is a similar blogging site to Livejournal, maintained by former LiveJournal team members, and hosted in the US -- here is some recent information for new members posted by the team here.

While we don't plan to remove any content that's ever been posted here, we'd like to mark a line in the sand at which point we leave the top post on this community as a pointer to where we are now located. ron_newman has backed up the community twice to make sure all our older posts and comments are preserved. However, there is no way to continuously cross-post the community, and none of us will continue to push new posts over to Livejournal after May 1. In addition we will be removing posting access to this community over the next few days as well.

You can read more about the concerns regarding Livejournal as a platform here

Please join us in our new home!

target="_blank" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Dreamwidth, beginning May 1.

You can read more about the concerns regarding Livejournal as a platform here

Your team of moderators are open to suggestions about the style of the community on Dreamwidth, as it has not been chosen recently and is probably not as up to date as it could be for mobile or other readability. Please feel free to share in the comments.

On a personal note, leaving Livejournal a few months ago, other than this community, was personally very difficult for me as I’ve been using this platform more than fifteen years. I do quite like Dreamwidth and had no problems migrating over. I believe in the leadership team’s statement of diversity and guiding principles. I really hope that those of you who are similarly conflicted about LJ and want to maintain an open community for us to have discussion about just any old thing happening in Davis Square will find us there.

Somerville Garden Club Meeting, April 12

Shona Stone Sculptures in the Garden

The Shona people of Zimbabwe are well known for the originality and beauty of their stone carvings. Many of these sculptures have been featured in botanical gardens and sculpture parks throughout the world. Rosemary Chimbganda of Zimbabwe, an expert on and importer and retailer of Shona sculpture, and Susan Miller, a Somerville gardener whose garden highlights Shona sculpture, will share their knowledge of Shona sculpture as well as present photos and video(s) of Shona garden sculpture and the sculpting process.

Rosemary Chimbganda grew up in Zimbabwe where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Economics before moving to USA more than 32 years ago. Rosemary was a successful computer programmer and software consultant for many years. In 2003, her growing passion for the Zimbabwe stone sculpture won her over and she now travels around the country promoting and selling the sculptures. She is also a real estate agent with Keller Williams’s realty.

Susan Miller has been in private practice as a learning disability specialist for over 20 years. Her work now includes assessing and tutoring children with language based learning disabilities in reading, math and writing. After meeting Rosemary Chimbganda last year, Susan became obsessed with learning about and owning Shona stone sculptures.

All Somerville Garden Club meetings are free and open to the public. There will be also be garden Q and A, light refreshments and a raffle. 7-9pm. Meetings are held the at the Tufts Administration Building, (TAB), 167 Holland Street, second floor, wheelchair accessible. Parking is available, and the building is a ten-minute walk from the Davis Square MBTA stop.

Parking Options When Away for a Couple of Weeks

Me and my girlfriend own 2 cars one of which has a designated spot and the other we park on the street. Say we are planning a 2 week vacation, wondering what would be my best options to park the extra car. Parking at the airport can quickly add up to $138 for a week. Or we could could just leave it on the sidewalk and eat the $50 fine for street sweeping assuming they are not towing it. What do you folks do?

Signal boost: Affordable Housing

Just heard from my Alderman that there's a huge new apartment complex proposed for Assembly Square, and the developer is trying to talk the city out of requiring the usual minimum amount of affordable housing. If you think this is a bad idea, I recommend writing to the Planning Board. More details on Mark Niedergang's website.

styrofoam recycling

Does anyone know of a place in Greater Camberville that accepts small styrofoam for recycling? I live in Arlington, which accepts large packing foam (the kind that immobilizes electronics in shipping boxes), but doesn't accept small foam containers (clamshell boxes from takeout food, which have a #6 recycling symbol on the bottom). The town collection staff told me that no recycling business will pay for the latter and I should put it in the trash. But if it's recyclable, I should be able to recycle it, right?!?!

Dentist dilemma

I just had a pretty bad experience at Dental Arts and need to decide whether to go back to get the damage fixed or go elsewhere and spin the wheel of fortune.

I've been a patient there for a while. I had a few fillings done, a crown put in, checkups, etc. There have been some signs of problems, though. The crown sat way too high, so they had to grind it down to nearly flat (so what was the point of taking a mold of my bite?) and I can feel the bottom of it with my tongue. And at my most recent checkup, it *hurt* when the hygienist was doing her inspection and cleaning, like she was stabbing me repeatedly with a needle. But I didn't say anything.

Most recently I came in to get an amalgam filling replaced (it was pulling away from the tooth) and a cavity filled on a nearby tooth. It was deeply unpleasant.

- The dentist (Dr. Idrizi?) was very rushed. I kept hearing her and someone else talk about needing to hurry, and I could tell she was hurrying and impatient.
- The assistant was clumsy and kept stabbing my tongue and the floor of my mouth with the suction tube and hurting my lips by pressing them against my teeth.
- The dentist kept sniping at the assistant for being clumsy or doing the wrong thing. I felt bad for the assistant and I didn't want someone irritated in my mouth either.
- The bite on those teeth is now out of alignment, there are two places with sharp edges, and there are big rough patches and places the floss catches. I think she didn't clean up her work.
- I didn't have a chance to speak to the dentist or the assistant about any of this because they rushed out of the room and left someone else to send me out the door.

I called and spoke to the manager afterwards, and she offered to have Dr. Dobrin, who I saw some years ago, fix whatever is wrong and do my remaining filling work. I declined, but now I'm unsure. After all, he's something of a known quantity, whereas if I go elsewhere, well... dentists are of pretty variable quality. Also I'd have to have *two* appointments at the new place, the first one being an intake and comprehensive exam. I'm had a lot of doctor appointments recently and I'm getting sick of it.

I guess my question is: How wrong is it to conflate the individual dentist with the practice?

Defeated by Jerk Bus

Welp, that was a total bust.

The Jerk Bus beat me. They kept moving too fast, not staying anywhere for long, and spreading misinformation about when and where they'd be, so I couldn't catch up to them. It was like chasing Carmen San Diego; by the time I'd arrived at the State House, they'd already moved to Harvard, and I suspected that the moment I got to Harvard, they'd leave again.

So now I've got a bunch of resources and nothing to do with them. You can download the whole load free here, I guess; I'm gonna take it down in a week, because some of it is pirated and I don't want to bilk my own community. The whole thing contains:

INTERACT PAMPHLETS (from http://interactadvocates.org/resources/
intersex-brochures/ )

* Intersex 101: A Beginner's Guide
* Know Your Rights for Parents of Intersex Children
* What We Wish Our Friends Knew
* What We Wish Our Parents Knew
* What We Wish Our Doctors Knew
* Intersex Resource FAQ on Retrieving Medical Records
* U.S. State Department Modernized Process to Change Sex Markers on Passports

TRANSTORAH FILES (from http://www.transtorah.org/resources.html )

* Classical Jewish Terms for Gender Diversity
* Blessing for Transitioning Genders
* Gender Diversity in Halacha
* How I Met the TimTum
* On Becoming a Woman, by Qalonymos ben Qalonymos, 1322

SEX AND RELATIONSHIPS

* Safer Sex for Trans Bodies (from HRC)
* Transcending Anatomy: a guide to bodies and sexuality for partners of trans people (from Eli Aaron)
* Domestic Violence: A Resource for Trans People (from the Greater London DV Project)
*<strike> Fucking Trans Women (from Mira Bellwether) </strike>(removed, buy it here)
* Trans People In Love

SCIENCE!

* Oh Joy Sex Toy: Homologous Genitals (by Erika Moen)
* Bilaterally Gynandromorphic Chickens, and Why I’m Not “Scientifically” Male (by Natalie)
* The Intersex Roadshow: Intersex Genitalia Illustrated and Explained (by Dr. Cary Gabriel Costello)
* Evolution's Rainbow, Chapter 11
* Evolution's Rainbow, Chapter 13
* Evolution's Rainbow, Chapter 16

MISC

* Hello Cruel World, the short version by Kate Bornstein
* APA transgender and GNC guidelines
* Medical Therapy and Healthy Management for Transgender Men
* Sexile, a comics biography of Adelia Vasquez
Man, can't believe I burned all that energy for nothing. Stupid bus.

April events at Havurat Shalom

Saturday April 1 there will be a presentation by the GLBT Asylum Seekers Task Force.

Sunday April 30, there will be a Legal Observer training.

And as always, Shabbat services and Passover services.

Saturday April 1: LGBT Asylum Seekers - Their Stories
10:00 AM Shabbat services
c. 12:30 PM potluck lunch
c. 1:00 PM Presentation

Did you know that it is illegal to be gay in nearly 80 countries? The LGBT Asylum Support Task Force is a group of dedicated volunteers in Central Massachusetts who provide support for those who are seeking political asylum in the U.S. based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Since 2008, the Task Force has helped more than 130 individuals. Asylum seekers are vulnerable and traumatized individuals who have fled to the U.S. in fear of being killed or harmed in their countries of origin due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. The violence resulting from homophobia and anti-homosexuality laws in many countries around the world is rampant.

The volunteers of LGBT Asylum Support Task Force contribute to the financial, housing, social, and spiritual needs of asylum seekers as they embark on their journey to freedom in this country. Please join us on Saturday, April 1st, and meet some of our asylum seekers and hear their stories. Your support and compassion are incredibly important; we hope to see you then.

You can support the LGBT Asylum Support Task Force here: http://www.lgbtasylum.org/

Everyone is welcome to come to Shabbat services starting at 10:00 AM, and there will be a vegetarian potluck lunch.

Tuesday April 11, 11:00 AM - Services for the First Day of Passover

Monday April 17, 10:00 AM - Services for the Seventh Day of Passover, including Yizkor, the Memorial Service

Sunday April 30, 4:00 PM - Legal Observer training

Learn how to be a Legal observer (LO). LOs are volunteers who work as part of a National Lawyers Guild legal defense team to protect the rights of progressive demonstrators both during and after a demonstration at which arrests might occur. They serve both as a deterrent to police misconduct and to document any misconduct or other facts that may help in the defense of arrested demonstrators. They may be needed as witnesses on behalf of demonstrators in criminal or civil trials arising out of the demonstration, which trials might occur as much as a year after the demonstration. You can be a Legal Observer at one event and an active demonstrator at another, different event; you just cannot be both at the same demonstration/protest.
Old powderhouse school

There is a lot of work happening at old Powderhouse School on Broadway. Does anyone know where the plans are online for the new design that includes high school? I have not seen anything in the paper or at city websites.

The Free Speech Bus

Okay, you guys have probably already heard, but the Free Speech Bus is coming our way. (It's this total horseshit bus covered in slogans about how only XX girls and XY boys exist and anyone who says otherwise is against free speech and also SCIENCE because that's totally how science works.)

The bus got hit hard in NYC, so it's in the repair shop until Wednesday; I'm not sure when it's going to hit Boston and Harvard Square, but I'm planning something to do when it does.

Much as I hate giving these dude a platform, I think I hate being played even more, and their whole idea is to try and trigger outrage and then play the victim, allowing them to milk their supporters for money and sympathy. If I can't change their minds, and I can't stop the bus except for a short time, I'd rather help my fellow trans and intersex people, and their allies. I figure a lot of us will be there, and probably ground down by this jerkbus, so I can try and pump us up.

I have a bunch of free 101 and resources on our computer, and a stack of blank CDs nabbed from a garage sale. I can burn the files to CDs, write 'em down, shove 'em in sleeves, put on pride gear and a homemade sign and follow that bus around offering resources and actual science to anyone who'll take them.

I'd like to have someone with me while I'm doing this. I don't think anyone'll try and curbstomp me, but you know what, luck favors the prepared, and two people are always much braver than one. However, until they release a new schedule, I don't think there's really a way for anyone to make any guarantees.

Documents I have so far:

* Domestic Violence Guide for Trans People (from the Greater London Domestic Violence Project)
* Trans Safer Sex Guide (from HRC and Whitman-Walker Health)
* Hello Cruel World Lite 101 (from Kate Bornstein, the short free version of her suicide-prevention book)
* Medical Therapy and Health Maintenance for Transgender Men for Healthcare Providers (from Spade, Buth, and Gorton)
* various orthodox Jewish articles about the history and categories of gender from the Mishnah and Halacha. (Will probably have some Christian articles too in a sec.)
* Fucking Trans Women zine (from Mira Bellwether)
* Transcending Anatomy: a guide to bodies and sexuality for partners of trans people (from Eli Aaron)
* Sexile (a comics biography of Adelia Vasquez, a trans woman activist and educator)
* Trans People In Love (stories of trans people in relationships, from and by trans people)
* Some science about fetal development and how sexual differentiation in nature doesn't actually conform to our human categories.
* Intersex 101 and Know Your Rights articles (from InterACT)

Documents I'd like to have but don't:

* More transition info for trans women

Any recs? Any thoughts?

--Mori

The Age of Reason Got It Wrong | Understanding Social Conflict Through a Brain Science Lens

Most approaches to solving the most pressing social challenges we face are wrong because they are rooted in the deeply flawed assumption that human behaviors and decisions are purely rational. Brain science and hard-won experience demonstrate just the opposite, revealing the primary role unconscious processes play in shaping our behaviors and decision-making, especially in the aftermath of violence and trauma. To thrive in the 21st century, what is needed is a profound reshaping of our approaches to human conflict and division, one that is rooted in a nuanced, empirical understanding of human behavior.

Timothy Phillips is a pioneer in the field of conflict resolution and reconciliation and co-founder of Beyond Conflict, a global initiative that is internationally recognized for contributions to the field of transitional justice in post-communist Europe.

[more details at the link]
https://www.meetup.com/Long-Now-Boston/events/238324333/ free to students

Monday, April 3, 2017
6:00 PM
The Burren back room

For sale: Crate & Barrel bar stools

Here's the Craigslist ad:
https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/fuo/6051352520.html

These retail for $110 each, but I got them at a yard sale for $40 each. Of course, then I realized they were the wrong height for my kitchen counter.

Anyway, I'm asking $40 each/$80 for the pair or best offer. They have a couple scratches but are otherwise in excellent condition.

Seeking contractor/handyman to repair classic Somerville detached garage

Our 1920's cinder block detached garage is of the classic Somerville style. It's pretty sound, but needs repair of rotted wood frame around the garage door and some cracked masonry/facade issues. Seems too small for major contractors, but might be more than a handyman usually does. Since there are so many of these garages around Somerville, and many have been fixed up, I'm hoping some of you can recommend the folks who do this work. Hoping to fix this spring. Thank you!

Somerville snow emergency ends tomorrow at 7 am; move cars by 9 am

Hello, this is Jackie Rossetti with important snow emergency information for Wednesday, March 15.

The City will lift the current snow emergency at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. Beginning at 7:00, vehicles parked in any municipal or school lot will have two hours to move out of the lot. Any vehicles not moved by 9 a.m. Wednesday will be ticketed and towed so that City crews can safely plow and treat the lots. Please note that while snow is expected to switch over to rain this evening, City crews will continue snow removal operations with large equipment throughout the night tonight, so cars must remain parked according to the snow emergency regulations until tomorrow morning.

Somerville Public Schools will remain closed on Wednesday. Somerville Public Libraries will open at noon, and Somerville Recreation has arranged for Open Gym in the Somerville High School gym, and public skating at Veterans’ Memorial Rink, both from noon to 3 p.m. tomorrow. City buildings will be open at 8:30 a.m. for all other business. As a reminder, trash is delayed by one day for the rest of the week.

Property owners are also reminded that you will have six daylight hours tomorrow to clear sidewalks abutting your property of snow and ice. Sidewalks not cleared by 1 p.m. on Wednesday may result in tickets each day until the sidewalk is clear. However, because we expect rain to move in and temperatures will drop well below freezing overnight, we urge property owners to clear sidewalks as soon as possible to prevent dangerous conditions.

As crews continue to work to clear snow and ice from streets, sidewalks, and lots, they will also work to shovel out fire hydrants and catch basins. If you are willing and able, we greatly appreciate any assistance from residents in shoveling hydrants and catch basins in your area.

If you have a non-emergency question, please call 311 (or 617-666-3311 from outside the city).

FoaF looking for an apartment:

This was sent to me via the Facebooks, and I thought I'd share it here. I'll be happy to send along any leads.

Friends! it’s been a heck of a winter and [partner] and I are moving. Our landlords just sold our place (it took less than a week) and we have to be out by the end of April. While our heart and lives are in Somerville, we’re also looking at East Arlington, Medford, Cambridge, Watertown on the Cambridge border, and so on. Do you know any great, sunny places available by May 1? We’re seeking:
- 2+ bedrooms (many times we’re both working from home)
- cat-friendly
- sunny/good light
- parking for one car (street OK)
- Red Line accessible (bus connection OK)
- hardwood floors (allergies)
- good kitchen
- May 1 or earlier lease
Is this impossible? Could there even be laundry in the building? We’ll find out! PM us if you have any leads, on places or a realtor you love. Thank you!
