New Year’s Resolution: Join DataSF as a Senior Data Engineer
As any Long Tails reader knows, DataSF loves data engineers.
Data engineers are the backbone of our team. They design and maintain the infrastructure that makes everything else possible—from publishing open data for the public, to powering our data science work, to enabling city staff to collaborate efficiently. Without strong data engineering, none of those efforts scale, endure, or deliver real impact.
Put simply: open data doesn’t happen without data engineers. Neither does modern analytics in government.
That’s why, in 2026, DataSF is growing.
We’re excited to be hiring a Senior Data Engineer (1043) to join our team and help advance our mission. This role is central to how the City and County of San Francisco works with data, and it offers the opportunity to build systems that directly support transparency, service delivery, and better decision-making across city government.
In this role, you’ll contribute across several core areas, including:
Platform administration
Pipeline development
Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
Best practices and innovation
Collaboration
Monitoring and support
DataSF’s mission is to transform the way San Francisco works with data. We believe that data, when harnessed effectively, can improve transparency, resident engagement, and government performance. We are committed to removing barriers and making it easier for all people to access services and knowledge, and we actively seek team members whose diverse life experiences reflect the residents we serve.
If you’re new to working in government, you’re not alone. Some of us came from the private sector, and the transition can be both rewarding and surprising. If you’re curious, we recommend reading our post on moving from tech to government to get a sense of what that shift can look like.
If this role sounds interesting, we encourage you to apply. Be sure to include your cover letter and complete the supplemental questionnaire!
We’re excited about what’s ahead, and we hope you’ll consider building the future of data in San Francisco with us!
