Okay, sure.

My dad's name is Keyyup Lee. (Anybody who's not Korean tends to have problems with that name.) His dad (my grandfather) was some sort of governmental person during the Japanese occupation of Korea and was thus a massively strict and stodgy old person. (My grandfather scares me still.) My dad grew up with three older sisters and sort of ended up having this massive 'you need to be the best!!!' mentality. He was academically pretty good, and got a scholarship into Seoul University, which is the most prestigious uni in South Korea -- so you know, he's pretty proud of being smart and stuff, and thus has high expectations for just about everyone. He was also apparently academically brilliant enough that he was excused from the mandatory military enlistment time (all Korean males have to serve in the army unless they have amazing excuses) and just got 13 months (I think) instead of the usual 21 months. After he graduated, he went to University of Chicago where he got a Ph.D. in economics (I think). Now he teaches Marketing (mostly) at Hongik University, where he has tenure.

He's sort of massively elitist in terms of studying and intelligence, and since I was little he's been saying things like "I'm smart, but you can be even smarter than me, so you need to be successful." He used to teach me math when I was younger but he was really strict and harsh, so I hated learning from him. (He also wanted to teach me two or three grades' worth material further ahead than I was learning at school.) He can be really nice and derpy at times (he used to stack like 20 Lego heads on a Lego body to make me laugh), but he also get angry really easily and really badly, and then he's just scary. He also used to beat me lolol but that's sort of general Korean culture so there you go.

My mom is Moonkyung Choi, she kept her last name instead of taking Lee. (Also a problem name for non-Koreans.) Her dad, unlike my grandfather on my dad's side, had a more posh lifestyle after the Japanese occupation, so my mom had a more comfortable lifestyle. There's some sort of nasty business with my mom's siblings that I still don't really understand. I think she has a sister and two brothers, but her sister (my aunt) got disowned by my grandfather sometime when I was in elementary school (???) so I haven't seen her in ages. The younger of my uncles also got disowned for a while when I was younger before being accepted back into the family, and currently the older uncle is disowned so I haven't seen him in ages. It's sort of weird and I'm not allowed to ask about it. Aaaaaanyway, my mom graduated high school and studied at Boston College, and then did her Ph.D. at University of Chicago (where she met my dad and then they got married and had me). After returning from the US, she took care of me for a while and then started teaching sociology at Kookmin University for a bit before transferring to a research project.

My mom's way more softhearted than my dad, and is a lot more sympathetic to me being a bit of a retard by the family's academic standards, haha. She's actually really really sympathetic and is the type of person to buy little gifts for the apartment security guards and give money to homeless people. (She enjoys stationary with pink bunnies and Peter Rabbit and tries to press them on me. I make so much fun of her for it.) She's also immensely intolerant of violence and such, haha. She can be pretty scary when she's mad (she's like 5-foot-nothing but you'd be surprised how scary a pissed off little Korean woman can be), but she's pretty good at controlling herself until she eventually explodes.

All in all, I've had a pretty lucky childhood. I had a pretty stable home and didn't have any huge crises. I guess my only gripe is that I have a really hard time connecting emotionally to either of my parents, since they're both huge academic (as well as most of my extended family) and I'm a bit of a black sheep in terms of my 'I wanna go write and draw, derp derp' feelings. I can't ever show them any of my creative works (my dad still wants me to be studying something 'smarter' and my mom wouldn't be able to stand any violence/brutality/cynicism) so I guess I feel a little bit unsupported emotionally speaking but I can live with that. I'm just complaining a bit pettily, really. My mom and dad are cool people on the whole.

Also my dad like five-foot-ten while my mom is like five-foot-two. Unfortunately, I got my mom's shorty genes. Sigh. ):

30 Days Meme

<strike>Day 01 - Introduce yourself
Day 02 - Your first love, in great detail
Day 03 - Your parents, in great detail</strike>
Day 04 - What you ate today, in great detail
Day 05 - Your definition of love, in great detail
Day 06 – Your day, in great detail
Day 07 – Your best friend, in great detail
Day 08 – A moment, in great detail
Day 09 – Your beliefs, in great detail
Day 10 – What you wore today, in great detail
Day 11 – Your siblings, in great detail
Day 12 – What’s in your bag, in great detail
Day 13 – This week, in great detail
Day 14 – What you wore today, in great detail
Day 15 – Your dreams, in great detail
Day 16 – Your first kiss, in great detail
Day 17 – Your favorite memory, in great detail
Day 18 – Your favorite birthday, in great detail
Day 19 – Something you regret, in great detail
Day 20 – This month, in great detail
Day 21 – Another moment, in great detail
Day 22 – Something that upsets you, in great detail
Day 23 – Something that makes you feel better, in great detail
Day 24 – Something that makes you cry, in great detail
Day 25 – A first, in great detail
Day 26 – Your fears, in great detail
Day 27 – Your favorite place, in great detail
Day 28 – Something that you miss, in great detail
Day 29 – Your aspirations, in great detail
Day 30 – One last moment, in great detail

My first love was when I was in second grade. I had a crush on one of the few non-Korean boys at our school, this kid called Marcus. I think he was German-something?

Either way, I liked him but never did anything about it until Valentine's day, when I made a little valentine card (it said "Bee My Valentine" or something and had a doodle of a bumblebee on it, haw haw, do you see how clever I was back then) and left it under his desk for him to find, but he never figured out it was me.

And then my crush for him withered away after a few years so that never went anywhere.
JUMPING THE MEME BANDWAGON AW YEH. Because why not.

I'm Miru. My surname's Lee, my given name is something incredibly girly and, as a result, rather embarassing, so I never go by it online. (I'd love to change my real name to something like Alex, something nice and androgynous.) My Korean name's Sohyun Lee. It's also a fairly girly name, sigh.

I was born in Chicago (August 19, 1989) while my parents were Ph.D. students at University of Chicago, and I lived there until I was five, when my parents graduated and we all went back to Korea. I grew up there for most of my life, although I went to an American school within Korea -- Seoul International School -- so I speak English a lot better than Korean and don't really have any sort of Korean accent. (Which is why it always startles people when I say I grew up in Korea.) I was pretty smart through elementary school before I had a magnificent middle-school-rebellion crash-and-burn and sort of became the brooding, antisocial, pseudo-goth-brat up through high school. My grades weren't that hot, and I disappointed my parents by failing to get into an Ivy League. Ah, well.

I'm currently a senior studying at Carnegie Mellon University, with a double major in Professional Writing (basically journalism and the like) and Creative Writing, and a minor in Communication Design (basically graphic design). I first came to college planning to study Electronic Engineering, as per my parents' wishes, but soon gave up because I realized that it just wasn't the thing for me. I wandered through Engineering, and then Computer Science, before landing in the humanities department. If things go well, I should graduate sometime in May. I'm not really sure what I'll be doing after I graduate, but I've been studying for the GRE in my free time with the intention of applying to the Carnegie Mellon Entertainment Technology Center and a few graduate design programs. (Haw haw, maybe I stand a chance.)

I enjoy drawing and used to want to do it for a living before realizing that's far too lofty (read: impossible) a goal, so it's been demoted to a hobby, pretty much. I drew a comic for a while but I've been distracted lately. My creative writing professor's pretty supportive of me attempting some sort of short comic to submit for publication, so we'll see.

I love reading and collect far more books than I should, and am in a bit of despair about what I'm going to do with the boxes of books and manga and artbooks I've amassed when I graduate. I love writers who have a sort of more clean, minimalist style. I love reading manga, but not anime as much, since just watching (as opposed to turning/clicking through pages) gets me so bored. I love dystopian and/or post-apocalyptic settings, lots of violence, and dark stories, but I'm not that averse to veering out of those categories when something catches my eye. I used to RP a lot, but it's winded down lately. Maybe I'll eventually go back.

Uh, what else. I'm stupidly healthy, pretty much never get sick, have no allergies, so on and so forth, which is lucky. My dad teases me saying that even if I have nothing else, at least I'll be healthy. (There's that saying that idiots don't get sick, so this worries me vaguely.) I'm fiercely shy and withdrawn around strangers but I can make small talk when necessary. I'm really polite (because I'm Asian, haw haw) most of the time and have a tendency to bottle up all emotions and then punch a pillow to vent. I also wear huge headphones whenever I'm walking around -- a pair of Sennheisers that I bought a few years ago and have been using daily since -- and have a shameful love of trashy electropop and disco music. I also listen to a wide assortment of weirdo things. I'm not that picky.

I can't cook worth shit, and I'm capable of setting off the fire alarm when attempting to cook pancakes. ): I'm also hilariously direction-blind, and can (and will) get lost just about anywhere. My biggest weaknesses.

Also I'm very awkward when it comes to writing introductions.

Yup.

Nice to meet you.

30 Days Meme

<strike>Day 01 - Introduce yourself</strike>
Day 02 - Your first love, in great detail
Day 03 - Your parents, in great detail

OUT OF NOWHERE, SCHOOL-RELATED POST because fuck, why not.

Okay so I'm taking this one Advanced Fiction Workshop class that's basically us trying to write the first 40 pages to a coherent novel over the course of the semester. I wrote the first four pages, took them in for critique. Took them home, edited them. Took them back for a second critiquing round. Got this incredibly flattering but still frustrating comment from one girl: "Okay, so when I was reading this, I got this shiver down my spine -- and I only feel that for like, my three favorite books, but I felt that for your first draft. But I don't know about for your edited draft."

Tbh I kinda liked my original version too but I can't take a workshop class without working with the critique I get aaaaaaa idk what to do the critique people gives me is so hard to fix while sticking to what I originally have in mind. /throws everything out the window.

Here is the first draft, because why not:

Ken had always liked the atmosphere of the JR Line platform in Shinjuku station. Even at two in the morning, it still carried some of the bustle and noise of the busy city outside. The station itself, of course, was quiet. There were some drunk businessmen milling about, inebriated and incoherent, clinging to each other to keep from toppling over. A young couple was seated on the platform bench hugging each other, barely refraining from being intimate in public.

And Ken stood before the railway tracks, staring down at the gravel. He was glad that they hadn't installed those safety barriers here, yet. Quite a few stations had been fitted with automatic barriers that would only open when the trains came in. Mostly to prevent drunkards and crowds from falling onto the tracks; they were mostly only a meter high or so, and would hardly do anything to stop anyone determined to jump onto the rails.

But still. He wanted this to go without any incident. He hardly wanted to make an undignified leap over the barrier, land face-first on the tracks and die with a broken nose. No, that would never do.

How long had he been standing here?

He wasn't sure. Since he'd arrived at the station, four trains had already come and gone past the platform, and each time Ken had quietly watched the crowd wander on and off the train. Each time, he'd thought, no not this train. This one doesn't feel right. Maybe the next one.

But he wasn't scared. He told himself he wasn't scared.

Somewhere behind him was the babbling chatter of a young girl, and when he turned, he saw a happy couple walking hand-in-hand followed by a little child. So, that meant this train wouldn't do, either. He'd have to wait until this child left. His aim wasn't to traumatize and leave behind psychological issues; his aim was to end a problem.

*

Ken was a twenty-eight year old businessman. His birthday had been two weeks ago. He was an accountant for a company that dealt with toner cartridges. The company would buy used toner cartridges for pennies and sell back the refilled cartridges at exorbitant sums. The company did decently. Ken wasn't sure of the details, because he wasn't of a high enough position to access that information.

His boss had forgotten his name, a week ago.

*

The little girl and her parents got on an incoming train and left. Ken watched as the train groaned and puffed and trundled off. It looked tired.

More people came and went. A fashionable young woman left for the streets, a tipsy man in a suit staggered in. There weren't that many people around the station.

He looked at his watch -- a Chinese counterfeit Rolex given to him by a girl he'd dated three times before she dumped him -- and saw that he didn't have that many trains left before the station closed for the night. Of course, he could always sit on the bench and wait until the trains started up again, but then that would kill the mood. Sitting around amidst sleeping hobos and homeless men had the tendency to do that. That had happened last week. He'd shown up at the station waiting for the right train, and hadn't been able to find it.

It had been disappointing.

But he was used to being disappointed and being disappointing.

*

His brother, on the other hand, was never disappointing. He was a CEO of another company that dealt in artsy T-shirts and designer accessories. He was tall and chiseled and was scheduled to marry a fashion model in two months.

*

The right train was the second-to-last train of the night. He looked up just as the message trilled over the electronic PA system, and he felt a twinge in his chest that told him that this was the right train. The sound of the train approaching carried the perfect combination of pride, mourning and determination.

For a moment, Ken wondered if he should take his tie off. Would it get tangled in the wheels? Should he take his shoes off? Empty his pockets?

He did empty his pockets, and deposited the loose change on the floor for some homeless man to pick up. A teenager wearing headphones looked over at him curiously, and Ken gave his usual awkward smile that said, please don't mind me.

He left his bag there, too.

His shoes, he kept.

He could properly hear the train coming in, now, and it just confirmed that this was the right train. It sounded energetic.

Standing at the edge, Ken took in a deep breath. He'd read somewhere that the sound of a train hitting a body was something like the sound of a hammer hitting a pumpkin. Not very glorious. But that was okay.

The train's lights were bright. It was coming in fast, so he let out the breath he'd been holding, and jumped off the edge. Somewhere behind him, the headphoned youth gasped. He thought he heard the sound of a cellphone camera going off, but maybe that was just his imagination.

What wasn't his imagination, though, was when he turned his head to look at the incoming train, and realized that there was something between himself and the train's headlights. Something a bit smaller than him, but not by much. Something clothed in a gray dress and with short brown hair. Something that was actually a woman.

He couldn't make out her face because she was backlit harshly by the train, but he could make out the silhouette of her face.

She had the most perfect nose he'd ever seen.

The train was filling the entirety of his vision, and just before he closed his eyes Ken saw that the obstruction between himself and the train was smiling at him.

He tried to smile back, but then the train hit them.

Yes it's set in Tokyo, as weeaboo as that is -- but I have the characters go to Aokigahara as a plot point later on (and there really aren't many places out there quite like Aokigahara) so it's legit okay. Also neither of them die. I found out that subway-jumping-suicides actually have a surprisingly low death rate (?!) so yeah. :I Although I think I'm too used to writing fanfics/short stories because I keep wanting to use too many section breaks.

Oh yeah I'm also working on a senior thesis which entails writing a post-apocalyptic novel (aw yeh I love it) which means I get to do lots of reading as "research." So I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy and holy shit it is like the most depressing novel I've read in so long what the fuck. But it was good. Recommended! (Considering checking out the movie.)

Now attempting to read The Stand, in all of its 1100+ page glory. (/scream.)

I was gonna post tl;dr about my life but I thought this would be more entertaining:

vore: Recently, Tsundere Cafes have been opening in the Otakuland of Akihabara. Similar to Meido Cafes, the waitresses there are young attractive women, each acting tsundere-ish towards their patrons: very rude and impatient at the beginning ("Here, sit." "Am I supposed to wait for you, or what?" "Have you decided on your order yet?!") but getting increasingly more apologetic and dere when they are about to leave ("I'm sorry I said all those things to you... you will come again, won't you?.."). Witness reports say that this change is irresistible. The waitresses apparently enjoy their jobs immensely, too, but, heck, getting paid for being rude to customers? A dream job.
vore: I would work here
databomb: ..... Six volumes, took me all morning, haha. It's a pretty dense read, and kind of -- weird, but it's really good. Genre-wise it's slotted roughly into seinen, slice-of-life, psychological and comedy, though I'm not really sure if that last one is an apt categorization. It's about the life of Punyama Punpun growing up in a vaguely-surreal world with a dysfunctional family and circle of friends.

Also, he's a cartoon bird in an other-wise-mostly-realistic human world. No one seems to notice or care.

Tl;dr IT'S REALLY GOOD you should give it a read. :|

ETA: Oh yeah unrelated but my parents gave me permission to do something fun for my birthday before school starts, so I may or may not be in NY for a week running around the city turning into a huge fattie in mid-August, aw yeh.

So. My laptop finally kicked the bucket. After months of wheezing and convulsing whenever I tried to boot it up, it finally started to refuse booting up; I talked to my dad on the phone and he said he was guessing it was about time anyway. He also said that I might as well go with a desktop replacement, since I have my netbook (which I'm on now) for any portable needs and a desktop would be both cheaper and sturdier. (I guess.)

I'll be getting an HP Pavilion Elite, but once I get it I'll probably wipe it clean and re-install Windows 7 to get rid of all the mandatory shovelware that comes with new computers, sigh.

I never thought it'd be this frustrating to have time to draw, but be lacking in the usual drawing tools. /longs for photoshop.

So yeah. I've been on my netbook a lot lately, because my main computer's been cripplingly slow and I just spent all day trying to get it reformatted to Windows XP properly. Not exactly the smoothest procedure, but I'll get there eventually. Hopefully.

On a completely unrelated topic, here is a comic I drew. For our Readings in Fiction class we were given free reign to do anything as long as it was 1) a nicely presentable final project and 2) something pertaining to the class. So I did a comic based on the phrase "they'll love you a little less" from "The God of Small Things." It turned out a lot longer than I had originally planned, so the story and artwork got (predictably) rushed towards the end. I spent a lot of time really worrying that the end product was shit, but seeing how much the class said it looked really nice and professional (one guy actually sent me an email(!!!) saying he was impressed, teehee), I guess it ended up okay. (I didn't even get to add any shading, sob.)

So yeah, posting it here because WHY NOT.

<img Lots of gang conflicts, violence and drama. Also featuring neo-nazis, rapists, cannibals, psychos and all other sorts of pleasant characters. -- but seriously, the characters in this series are all very well-written, and the prison setting is very gritty and realistic. The series gets kind of long, but it's well worth the time, and you really get attached to all the characters and plots after a while. Fun times!

all images link to amazon.com

John Dies at the End by David Wong -- a comedic horror novel, originally printed by an underground publishing company before being rereleased as a mass market paperback (and hardcover). A story about two dudes who end up embroiled in lots of very strange, very surrealistic stuff, that can be sort of scary in the middle, but also kind of funny. Involves some drugs, some deaths, some violence, some overall wtf-ery. Good times, good times -- though I'd recommend reading it when it's bright out.

Kafka on the Shore by Murakami Haruki -- a surrealist novel about, well. A boy named Kafka. Who may have this huge Oedipus thing going on. Also there is an old dude who can talk to cats. The Kentucky Fried Chicken man, a very sweet librarian, a random trucker dude and other oddities pop up here and there. Murakami's one of my favorite authors, and his writing style is very clean-cut and simple. His stories all tend to be based in the real world to start but then go veering into 'what the hell' territory -- in a good way! One of my favorite novels.

Not Simple by Natsume Ono -- a one-shot graphic novel by the same author who also did Restaurant Paradiso, House of Five Leaves, and some others. The art style is really quirky and simple, but it works well in telling the story which is, as you can guess, not simple. It's about a guy looking for his sister, long story short, but it's also very sad and very poignant, I think. Well-written, and kind of melancholy without being screaming-out-loud over-dramatic, and it has its funny moments, too. I liked it a lot.

When the discussion of favorite movie comes up in screenwriting class I usually just say "Fight Club" so people will know what I'm talking about, but since there are no boundaries on LJ:

<lj-embed id="220" />

SURVIVE STYLE 5+

Survive Style 5+ is a -- sort of a weird movie, to be completely honest. But amazingly charming, too. The visuals are great -- full of color, very very stylish -- for a start, and the story is pretty fun once you get the hang of following the five separate narratives that meander through the movie. Tadanobu Asano (Kakihara from Ichi the Killer, and other movies like Akarui Mirai, Zatoichi, The Taste of Tea) plays a man who wants to kill his wife, played by Hashimoto Reika (model and actress, and totally hot), except she keeps coming back to life and beating the snot out of him. And then a hypnotist and an advertisement creative director and a happy nuclear family and a bunch of thieves get thrown into the story. Oh, and Vinnie Jones. It's not exactly the most coherent of films, but it's very colorful, and unexpectedly very sweet once you take the whole thing into account. Oh yeah, it also has the most amazing kinetic typography opening credits I've seen so far. Very highly recommended!

[ DOWNLOAD MOVIE (.AVI) ]
[ DOWNLOAD SUBTITLES (.SRT) ]

NNNNNNnnnn god it sucks when you feel sick-ish but it's a vague sort of sick-ish so you can't really do anything except just sit there sick-ish. Anyway. Here's some art-things.

I've been working on a short comic for one of my class finals and I'm using a soft moe-moe sort of art style on it (well, softer and moe-moe-er than Skiamachy, at least, since moe-moe is not my forte) and it feels so weird trying to get used to it.

It's a love story, sort of. We just had to use the readings from the semester as a springboard for a project, so I chose the phrase "I don't love you any more," from the book The God of Small Things. (Which is a decent read, by the way.) ~*~*~DRAMATIC!!!~*~*~*~

Also, here are some low-effort POKEMAN GIJINKA!!!! doodles.

Yes, I give all my pokemans weeaboo names. My starter always ends up being my strongest pokemon. And then I have these two:

I usually don't name pokemans after fandom characters but these two fit too well.... /blank stare

Because Sabrina's a tricky bitch I've been levelgrinding by just going through the Elite Four a few times, sigh.

Herpaderpaderp.
