In case you haven't noticed, I'm not really on LJ at all anymore. I still read DW daily, but I'm mostly on tumblr. So add me on one of those places instead if you haven't already. (username is the same as always, darksilverhawk.tumblr.com or darksilverhawk.dreamwidth.org)

Musings on cosplay, in which Hawk reveals all her dirty secrets.

So Colossalcon was last weekend. It has taken me this long to post on it because I bought WO3 when I got back but that's not the point. Linking to tumblr post for pictures because I am lazy. I feel like I should be making this with a proper photoshoot behind me and stuff but I need to think out loud and bounce ideas around.

As I'm saying everywhere, she's not done. <s>I can't style wigs to save my life.</s> There's still some detailing that I just ran out of time for, but I wanted to wear her regardless. I was still working on it Thursday morning. The whole thing was basically done in a month, which would have gone much better if I had not lost a week to strep throat.

I could not find the right colors for anything. The light blue was a much more tealish color that I dyed to get closer to what I wanted. (The original color was used to line the jacket.) The dark blue was a "this isn't right, well whatever" compromise. <s>The boning in the bodice hates me and keeps curving in weird positions.</s> I ended up painting the bodice details because of lack of a way to get an applique to work like I wanted it to.

The knives are wood, and once my dad cut them they took me 6 hours to paint. So much detail. Also, the wig is really heavy and I was fighting it all day. Those picture were taken right after we got down from the hotel room and it was already starting to slip. I got it in place a bit better after that, but it sure hurt by the time I got out of it. Thankfully Woona's wig is light.

Does anyone know of a good way to affix things to pleather? I think I've tried every type of glue we have in the house and nothing will stick. (the boot fringe is currently held up by bobby pins)

Woona cosplay was awesome. Everything was awesome and nothing hurt and I hung out with Bronies who loved Moonstuck all con so everything was great. (But she said last night that Moonstuck will probably end around August, so :( )

I will actually respond to comments on this post, guys. All of them. Promise.

This entry was originally posted at http://darksilverhawk.dreamwidth.org/61818.html.
Well this week has been crazy (icon related)

Well, this week has gone down as such:

-Sunday morning our desktop died on us completely. The repair shop has it right now, but they haven't gotten around to figuring out what is wrong, but a new computer might be in our future. My laptop monitor is also starting to act up again AND whatever keeps knocking the cord out seems to have taken the power panel out with it, so I can't get it on without pulling the panel cover off and holding it at the exact proper angle, so I might have to get that fixed too.

-Sunday my throat also started to hurt. Monday it still hurt, and Tuesday it really hurt, but Tuesday morning I wasn't running a fever so I went to class and work. By the time I got home after 5, I was pretty dead and I pretty much couldn't swallow. I finally took my temperature and I was running a fever at this point, so off to the university clinic I go. Since I haven't actually been there yet since I rarely get sick, they have to take a full medical history and get all my info, which takes forever, and then they leave me to sit there for quite a while. (Also, my fever had jumped 2 degrees at this point, and the nurse was wondering what I was doing walking around in public all day with a 102 degree fever.) TWO HOURS, a strep test, and a mono test later, they determine that my strep test had probably returned a false negative and it was pretty obvious I had strep throat (I coulda told you that :/) gave me antibiotics and told me not to go out on Wednesday. Which was perfectly acceptable because people who were paying attention will have noticed that I had let it go for three days untreated at this point which meant I spent the next two days dying while I waited for the antibiotics to work.

-Did I mention I had a midterm for an intensive summer class on Friday? A four-weeks for a semester worth of material that I missed a day of class of to this strep throat business? (I dragged myself in on Thursday) Also that I hadn't really remembered anything that happened that week since I had been running a fever for most of it and just wasn't in any decent shape? I also handed in a paper I was surprised to get a passing grade on, but then again I couldn't really remember what I wrote anyway.

-And then I spent all day today working on cosplay stuff. I discovered wigs are still my weakspot and I really shouldn't have taken Yuanji's ponytail out to bring the cap in a bit, so I'm going to get another set of hands and a wig detangler to sort that out. (I feel like I'm loosing an awful lot of fiber out of it now. I may need to seal off the wefts I cut out I bit better.) Still, her dress is done, including the dreaded collar, so next up is the jacket and then the skirt. Her knives will get done somewhere along the way as well.

This entry was originally posted at http://darksilverhawk.dreamwidth.org/60839.html.
-A Canterlot Wedding was absolutely fabulous~ Much, much better than the last season finale in terms of plot and awesome. I wasn't too crazy about the two new characters coming completely out of nowhere, but the writing and pacing was excellent, the villain was great and Pincess Cadance and Shining Armor were both well-introduced and well developed, all things considered. I wish it had been properly movie-length instead of just being a two-parter. And the music was AMAZING, as always. Best songs of the entire season, imo. And Princess Luna appeared AND got lines AND Vinyl Scratch got an appearance. And the subtle little continuity nods were great. (Filly Twilight pulls Smarty Pants out of her toybox and the reception is set up in the hall with the stained glass windows from the season opener stood out to me, but I'm sure there are more I haven't noticed yet) Best. Season. Finale. EVER! (Now we must pit Princess Cadance and Shining Armor against the Mane 6+The Elements of Harmony to determine once and for all what is stronger; love or friendship? <strike>S3 opener?</strike>)

-Then I went and saw The Hunger Games the next day. I haven't read the books yet (though I keep meaning to) but I thought the movie was excellent.

-Wang Yuanji's dress doesn't make any sense. :/ Kai's DLC without the jacket helps a ton, I'm still not sure how to construct it. (Do people agree with me that it looks like the bodice, top skirt layer, and sleeves are one piece, with the two layer underskirt being a separate piece? Or has that been refuted somewhere? The fact that the databook seems to contradict itself doesn't help. May need to find someone to translate the notes on the page for me. :/)

-Running koeiland is going to be like pulling teeth, isn't it? *kicks comm*

-SOMEONE is making me unlock all my fics now. >;( <strike>it's ok, I still love you bb.</strike>

<strike>ehehe the pony rant is longer than the rest of the post ^^"</strike>

-Gettin' slammed by RL. D: I think there might be a Chaos TL curse or something- as soon as you take up the position, rl comes along and eats you. In this case, real life happens to be my printmaking class, which is my life right now.

-Workin on getting Koeiland stuff together. If people stopped watching silently and spoke up, this would go a lot smoother. *glare glare glare* Oh well. I'll keep pounding away on it. I'll get enough people together eventually.

-My LJ paid account expires in a week or so. Working on getting my userpics deleted so I don't get caught by LJ's nonsensical algorithm for determining what stays active, or get caught by the stupid userpic selector bug. It also means I lose my style, so my S2 commenting goes away. ;; I was hoping they'd have that all somewhat fixed by now, but that's asking too much of LJ, now isn't it?

-Happy leap day?

-Saving up for.... something. I have yet to decide whether I want a PS3 or a 3DS. :/ Though the conversation with my cousin went something along the lines of "I need to buy a PS3 to play WO3. :(" "It's not worth it to play one game. Trust me." "...You don't know me very well, do you?"

This entry was originally posted at http://darksilverhawk.dreamwidth.org/58666.html.
Have some wee!idiots

I saw the new art from the Pokemon crossover and immediately got the urge to write wee!idiots. Mostly because I'm stuck at home sick, channeling Hanbei. The hacking my lungs out part, not the other parts. Also, someday Mitsunari will grow up to be big and strong an increase his repertoire of insults. Until then, he just has to settle for calling everything stupid.

Title: Scrapes and Bruises
Rating: G
Characters: Wee!Idiot trio, Nene, and one other.
Summary: Mitsunari never enjoyed the rough games of the other two, preferring to keep to himself.

--

Most people who had ever had contact with Mitsunari swore that the young boy was almost perpetually frowning. While his foster brothers spent their time running around the estate, playing soldiers or ninjas (“Just like Lady Nene!”) or simply running around making a mess of themselves, Mitsunari was more than satisfied to declare their games “stupid” and sit quietly; reading, studying, or pretending to do one of the two while he listened to the adults talk. Nene was more than happy to let Mitsunari follow her around, allowing him to observe much of what went on around the adults while only occasionally being forced to go outside and play with Kiyomasa and Masanori (because Nene thought he needed the exercise, as if merely trying to keep up with her weren’t a feat in itself), an event which was usually followed shortly by Mitsunari stumbling back inside with a pair of skinned knees, dirty clothing, and a very convincing set of tears that caused Nene to keep him inside for days.

It was while he was nursing a fresh set of scrapes that Nene announced to the three boys that they were having visitors. “They have a boy your age, too,” Nene told them, “I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun together!”

Mitsunari was unsurprised and didn’t really care when the visitor’s son was promptly snatched up by Kiyomasa, declaring himself “bandit captain,” and making Masanori and the visitor the local law enforcement. They spent the better part of the afternoon running around the gardens, the more nimble Kiyomasa always staying ahead of his pursuers, be they his playmates or the annoyed household staff. Finally, a bump on the head brought the bandit terror to a standstill, causing Nene to sweep him inside as the tears threatened to fall. The visitor, being freed of the game, found Mitsunari sitting inside.

“Do you wanna play with us?”

“No. Kiyomasa’s games are stupid.” Mitsunari did not hesitate to give the stranger his exact opinion of his foster brother.

“So, what do you like to do?”

“Stuff.”

“Oh,” the visitor sat down beside him, “What kind of stuff?”

“Stuff I like to do.”

“Oh.” A pause. “Is it fun stuff?”

“I guess so.”

“What are you doing right now?”

“Nothin’. Lady Nene was giving me a math lesson, but then that dummy bumped his head and she had to go take care of him instead.”

“Is it hard math?”

“Not really. But Kiyomasa can’t seem to do it anyway. And Masanori’s no good at anything that doesn’t involve hitting things. That’s why Lady Nene gives me lessons all by myself.”

“Wow, cool. Do you take lots of lessons?”

“Yeah. She’s teaching me all kinds of stuff. History and literature and science. She says my calligraphy needs work though. I don’t see the problem; I can read it fine. And I’ve started learning the tea ceremony from her, too. Lady Nene says I make the best tea in all Japan.”

“The tea ceremony? That’s not fair. They told me I couldn’t learn it until I’m older.”

Mitsunari beamed, “Lady Nene says I’m so good she’ll teach me anything I ask.”

The visitor sat up straighter, “Maybe you can ask her to teach me. I’m Yukimura, by the way. What’s your name?”

“I’m Mitsunari. That kinda sounds like fun. Maybe she could give us both a lesson at the same time.” Mitsunari was interrupted by a clumsy set of footsteps and the return of the bandit captain.

“Hey, dummy! Now you’re playing with us too!” Masanori yelled at him.

“Hey! Who are you callin’ a dummy? And I don’t wanna play your stupid game! It’s stupid!”

“Lady Nene said you have to come play with us,” Kiyomasa said with his best air of authority, “And I say that we’re bandits and you and Yukimura have to come catch us!”

“That’s stupid! She didn’t say anything like that!”

“Well, she didn’t…” Kiyomasa stammered, “But she said we have to play with Yukimura, and since Yukimura’s playing with you that means you’re playing with us!”

“No I’m not!”

“Yes you are!”

“Hey Mitsunari?” Yukimura ventured into the argument, “Why don’t we just play with them for a little while? And then maybe we can go find Lady Nene.”

Mitsunari frowned and crossed his arms, but relented, “Fine. But only because Yukimura asked me to, got it? It’s still a stupid game!”

Within 15 minutes, Nene was carrying Mitsunari back inside, on the verge of tears thanks to Kiyomasa pushing him off one of the ledges in the garden, causing him to scrape both knees and an elbow as he fell. It really did hurt, but in his tearful state Nene did promise to give him Yukimura lessons together in anything they wanted the next day.

You might have heard of this show before

I finally got my Sengoku Basara 2 DVDs in the mail today and spent the afternoon <strike>sick </strike>re-watching the series. I watched about 50/50 dub/sub.

Knee jerk dub reaction: Chris Cason is <strike>not </strike><strike>Ishida Akira</strike> way to deep for Hanbei.

Actual dub reaction: As someone who usually prefers Japanese but doesn't vehemently hate dubs or anything, I think it's quite good. For the most part all the actors are well-matched to their parts and definitely play them enthusiastically. While Chris Cason isn't Hanbei, he's definitely playing a character similar to Hanbei, if not quite as <strike>flirty fabulous </strike>Hanbei-esq. I was disappointed with the writing for Hanbei, but I think he's a tough character to translate. Still, some lines had plot-important bits dropped/changed for no apparent reason (see episode 2 and ALL the hints Hanbei drops that something is wrong). Why am I complaining about Hanbei? Because I pay a lot of attention to him. In other news, I like everyone else, including Hideyoshi. I think it's very strong over-all.

Ohhh, shiny! reaction: Damn, this is so much better than crappy Youtube rips.

Extras reaction: Disclaimer: I love commentaries. I live for commentary. Upon receiving the disks the first thing I did was pop the first volume in and listen to the commentary track. That said, the commentary on episode 6 is awesome and very interesting to listen to. (writer/director/sound producer/etc commentaries are usually more interesting to me than VA commentaries, but that said...) Also, they're definitely both as into the series as the fans are and see the silliness much the same way. They also never run out of things to talk about. Episode 12, on the other hand... meh. None of them seem to be able to think of interesting things to say, and they don't seem to be having as much fun. They have their moments, but for the most part I was disappointed.

(All that said, dub!Hanbei is growing on me. NOT AS MUCH AS HIS FABULOUS COUNTERPART, but enough to be tolerable.)

Dreamwidth. Is. Awesome. Seriously, I know I never would have said this two months ago, but all of you who are holding out, at least get an account. It is now my primary (I am Darksilverhawk or rarely some permutation thereof EVERYWHERE, I am always easy to find), though everything will be crossposted so it shouldn't change anything on the LJ front. Except in March my paid account will expire and my S2 commenting will go away with my journal style, but I'll figure that out later. (And if the theories going around that the American LJ staff are trying to stand up to Russian management and warn us to leave are true, somebody give them a medal and a really well paying job somewhere else.)

Current game of Dwarf Fortress can be summed up by the phrase, "oh dear, that is a lot of goblins." :/ Seriously, I have a population of just under 200 and am getting sieges of 60-80 goblins two or three times a year. I'm so well defended that I've only lost two dwarfs the past three years, but several are walking on crutches or are missing arms. (And one of my hunters is paralyzed from the waist down after getting beaten almost to death by a minotaur wielding a glove but it still hunting. Successfully. Speaking of people who deserve medals...)

Completely different topic, I am wondering somewhat at what logic Koei has behind not doing an English dub for one of their flagship franchises, but I'm sure they <strike>have logic</strike> still have that hamster employed at their market research department...
Since this Okami run thing is proving really easy (and I am the slowest video-gamer EVER) I took a break yesterday and played LoZ: Twilight Princess for 9 hours.

If this were actually occurring, I think it's safe to say Hyrule would be totally screwed. (unhindered spoilers for Okami and Twilight Princess follow)

"The next mirror shard is on a snowy mountain."

"...Can I get a little more that that? Does it have a name? Big mountain, small mountain? A direction? Maybe? Do you even have any idea how many mountains there are in Hyrule? Ok then, going home now."

I like the game a lot, but some of those puzzles are ridiculous. Getting into the Temple of Time, for example. How are you supposed to figure that out by yourself? After wandering around the sacred forest grove for 30 minutes, the thought process that led me to figure it out was: "Hey, maybe if I shove the sword in the pedestal I'll go back in time 7 years, hahahaha-Whaaaaaat? Really?" More importantly, how are you supposed to figure that out without having played OoT first? I know with the amount of times it's been released almost everyone has by now, but the game itself gives you no hint that the pedestal itself is inherently magical. The coolness of the Temple of Time itself made up for this, but still. And the Arbiter's Grounds took me almost 9 hours to complete, less than the next two temples combined.

However, Link has some of the most adorable expressions. His reaction to the Snowhead mini-boss is one of the calmest "oh shit" expressions I think I've ever seen.

As far as Okami is concerned, I just beat Blight, even with three inkpots the Golden Inkpot still appears to break the game, and the Sunken Ship is still terrifying. For some reason I was thinking you couldn't get the Golden Inkpot until the batch of artifacts that become available after you defeat Ninetails, but since you can get it early my concerns for the rest of the game are gone. This is going to be easier than I thought. (Also figured out a sure-fire way to outrun the water-dragon: Go diagonal left. It stops following you if you get too close to the island, which is close enough that you have plenty of time to beat it. No benefit to doing so, but no harm in it either.)

Also: That new Kirby game looks like tons of fun, I want it.

In Japanese, we have to do a short skit project. Ours is about an inept Shogun who is constantly making up silly decrees and getting assassins sent after him for it. We have named him "Tokubaka".

Personally, I feel like I have scored a great victory for the Western Army.

(Just beat Blight and got the Golden Ink Pot in Okami. Suddenly, my ink problems are not so much of a problem. Also, five solar energy with one sun fragment away from getting the 6th.)

I don't suppose anybody out there as ever considered playing Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch? After having not played TF2 in... quite some time but realizing maybe I really could learn to play a FPS, but I need something a bit more in line with my philosophy (kill everything). I downloaded it an tried it out a while ago thanks to kuposan3 on Youtube uploading a bunch of crazy zombie-mod videos for it, and I liked it but never started playing past the beginning of the single player campaign.

In other gaming news, I'm back on my no-praise run of Okami. Orochi is surprisingly easy with only three ink pots. Having fleetfoot pretty much negates the need for using any brush techniques for dodging most of the heads. The only ones that gave me trouble were the light head (I still have no idea how to dodge those beyond running off to the side) and the darkness head (potentially needing two pots of ink to deal with the buds if they fall in a bad position). Even then, the heads went down in 2-3 cycles with the first level reflector.

Also, I have a cast party for my latest dance showcase in about an hour. \o/

I saw that. And then this happened.

I have an icon comm now

There's nothing there right now but there should be a post in the next few days.<strike> I have such a massive backlog ;;</strike> However, in honor of this icon requests are open. Well, they're always open, but they're more open now than usual. Including animated icon requests!<strike> (which are also always open but whatever)</strike>

tl;dr: Free icons for all, what do you want?

1. Reply to this post with "Pluto Planet Power", and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

fightingoutside gave me...

I'm Ghost
Around this time about two years ago, Bodyline released a bunch of little one dollar pins. This was by far the most memorable of them, with it's wonderful engrish slogan and weirdly shaped ghost thing. I never got one of them myself, but the ghosty spirit can live on in my icon. I've always found something rather endearing about the little thing. It looks friendly and accepting of its ghostness, at least.

Sailor Mercury
Mercury was always my favorite as a kid, as the quiet bookworm with largely defensive powers. And "Sine Aqua Illusion" was the first attack she got that had the serious possibility to really lay the smack down on some monsters. (Though "Mercury Aqua Rhapsody" was nothing to sneeze at, either.) I really love this icon, it's one of my favorites in my current Sailormoon set.

CHotSUAttMoT
...Which stands for "The Complete History of the Soviet Union Arranged to the Melody of Tetris." (There's also a pony version now.) "I am the man who arranges the blocks that are made the men in Kazakhstan." A very silly little video detailing the history of Russia in the 20th century using a Tetris game as a analogy for "the more things change, the more they stay the same." I'm not even sure what the exact uses for this icon are, but I couldn't pass up making an icon of the Tetris blocks falling from the sky.

Mob of Russian peasants
Another icon from "The Complete History of the Soviet Union." "But the workers will rise! We will not compromise!" This one I actually do use, because what can be angrier than a mob of repressed Russian peasants? (Also, Russian peasants are just awesome.) It's another rather silly icon. I rather like the sledgehammers.

Sense
Ok, so I played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the very first time about a year ago, as one of my favorite LPers played it and that's sort of my method of discovering which great games I missed growing up. Now, for those unfamiliar with the game there is a courtyard featuring some candles floating in mid-air, which I guess is to add atmosphere but the first time I saw it it struck me as really strange to have candles floating in mid air. They're not even near the ground where people would be, they're about 15 feet up in the air. So this was weird but the not the weirdest thing in the game thus far, so I keep playing and get to the same area in the upside-down castle (which is the game's idea of a second quest, but it's literally just the first castle flipped upside down with no scenery changes whatsoever and harder enemies.). In the second castle I get to the courtyard yet again and the candles are still there. Except they're now burning upside-down. And it now makes even less sense. So I took a screenshot and made this icon.

I've mentioned the ducks before?

And that's not even all of them. I'd have to back up more to get them all in the shot, and I'd fall off my bed if I did that. I had to reorganize the shelf because they'd outgrown the space designated to them. <strike>No, that bear is not a duck, it's just in the picture.</strike>

Also, cosplay pictures always rock.

My friend Jenn is such an amazing photographer.
