Holy Crap I'm updating my LJ [28 Mar 2010|10:58pm]
Right, so this is weird. I've pretty much abandoned this whole LJ thing in favor of Facebook, Twitter, etc. (if you don't know how to find me on there just ask)

Life is OK. I just moved to a new apartment for the first time in 10.5 years, the first time that I have moved since coming to NYC in '99. Its a Big Deal, and Very Cool at the same time.

I feel motivated on all sorts of creative levels, and I am glad that some of my friends on here are seeing success in similar areas,

So yeah, I'll probably close this soon, but in the meantime that is my status update.

snow day [02 Mar 2009|04:56pm]
WTF. One of upstairs neighbors is doin aerobics or somesuch. This is what I get for working from home today. At first I thought they were having very energetic sex (and I was jealous) but now I'm pretty sure its excercise. Maybe they have a Wii Fit. All I know is that it's pissing me off. I think I'll go outside for the first time today. I need food, and have none in the house. I was going to get some delivered, but then I client needed a quote right away and I got sidetracked. Silly corporations.

That's my ramble.

yet another random post. [01 Feb 2009|02:28am]
I saw a girl on the subway the other day with a Fishbone T-shirt. A part of me swooned. The shirt was too damn new though, and the girl too young.

I posted this in response to a friend's inquiry about MySpace and Facebook, but it bears repeating here. I've been meaning to address this issue more formally, but since that doesn't seem to be happening, you get my stream of consciousness thoughts:

====

I have accounts on both Myspace and Facebook, (FB) but I rarely visit Myspace at all these days. I am a bit of a Facebook junkie, but the way I "use" that site is very different from how I used to interact with LJ.

I have a different set of friends on FB than I do on LJ. While there is a lot of overlap, I have many more 'friends' on FB, and I certainly don't feel like sharing with them some of the thoughts and feelings that I would post on LJ.

With my busy schedule I do find the short form updating of FB to be addictive. It's also a great way for me to stay in casual contact with the large numbers of colleagues that I have spread out all over the country and world.

I do miss writing more long-form, personal entries like I used to on LJ. I'm not quite sure what to do about that, especially if LJ goes away. It's funny, I joined LJ over 8 years ago, after stumbling across someone's journal while typing random combination of search terms into google. When I first joined, I didn't know anyone in 'real life' who was on LJ. I was in some ways a lot more open in what I wrote. I did develop a group 'friends,' but they were anonymous confessors for all intents and purposes. Over time a large percentage of my real life acquaintances joined LJ, and I had to change how I interacted with the site.

Ok, so that is a bit of a ramble. I guess I am just confused as to how to proceed. I've been posting bits of myself online for about a quarter of my life. I'm not looking to stop doing that anytime soon.

Wild in the street in Park Slope, Brooklyn [04 Nov 2008|11:35pm]
I could hear the countdown to 11PM EST with my windows closed. I had to go out and walk around for a bit to bask in the energy. I had been hopeful, but afraid. This is a great release. I can only trust that things will get better.

rambling update. [20 Oct 2008|01:04am]
[ mood | 10-year port ]

I continue to be crap with the LJ updating, but I don't see that changing anytime soon. If you want little status updates about my life, facebook is the place to go for that. I did download an LJ app for the iphone this week, so maybe I will post more. Maybe not. I think facebook is proving to be a good social network aggregator- a place where my twiiter, tech-LJ, and other stuff can all be accesed. It just sucks for the lomg form. I'm not looking port this journal to facebook though. Maybe I'll start a new block and link that, or just block all of my old stuff on here and then link it. Hmmmm///

As far as what is new with me, it's the same old boring stuff. Work, and lots of it. I'm probably the busiest right now that I have been all year. I have 2 big clusters of back-to-back jobs coming up. One is this Tuesday-through-Monday. 5 different gigs, 4 venues, 7 days, back to back. The other is is second week of November. Once I make it through all of that, my calendar is empty until Christmas. Honestly, if nothing else comes up, I will be happy. Business-wise this has been a record year, and I could use a break. I am way overdue for a vacation, but by the time I am able to take one it will be so close to all of the holidays that I don't see that happening.

I do have to take all of the work that I can, as the "current economic circumstances" have aleady resulted in the cancellation of one of my gigs, and many more for colleagues of mine. That big AIG meeting that everyone is upset about? I worked a conference for another big firm at the same exclusive venue earlier this year. Even companies that are doing well have to watch what they do event-wise, and public perception is a tricky thing. I'm working as hard as I can now and putting the money away. Who knows what the next year will bring?

Other stuff: I've been crap at reading lately too. I've been watching ripped TV shows on my iPhone during my commute insead of reading. I'm currently working throuh Season 1 of Arrested Development and Season 3 of Homicide: Life on the Street. I did go on a graphic novel binge last weekend, buying a whole bunch of Brian Wood-penned stuff, like the latest DMZ trade, the Local compilation, and some collge girls thing.

I could use some new music. We have tickets to go see Shiny Toy Guns on Tuesday. I'm psyched. I saw some punk, etc. bands (Thrice, Alkaline Trio, Rise Against) at Roseland last week, as my touring buddy Chadd was in town doing the lights. They were in town for 2 nights, so Chadd and I hung out after the first night. The guitar tech from the MCR tour I did was there too. Its a small world. after all. I like that my buddies come to town and I get to hang out and see shows.

random bits [29 Sep 2008|05:53pm]
Saturday I ran dancefloor lighting at a Bar Mitzvah gig at a major event space in NYC. I used to spend a lot of my weekends doing that sort of thing. Thankfully, in the last 3 years I've been abel to work less, make more, and not do as many "social" events. (Weddings, Mitzvahs, etc). In this case, one of my bigger clients was in a bit of a jam, so I agreed to do it. It's actually ridiculously easy (and good) money, but putting on a suit and listening to bad bad party music gets old fast. Thankfully I had my laptop, the internet, and some earplugs.

Yesterday was pretty chill. air_angel came over, although she wasn't feeling very well. We watched Cloverfield on Blu-Ray. I don't think that the "shaky-cam" style of shooting made her feel much better. The movie was interesting enough. I wasn't a big fan of the creature design of the monter though.

Still need to watch the season premieres of Dexter and Califiornication when time allows.

Economy is a big ol' mess. I came home early to let a plumber in, and turned on the TV to watch the market close, and the finger-pointing begin. I just had to turn off CNN because the partisan blame-game on both sides was making me sick. I don't feel any better about the "bail-out" package than most people, but we have to do something, and do it soon.

As someone with no debt, and a decent amont of cash on hand, I'm looking at maybe buying some stocks while they are low. We'll see.

This week I have a small gig with a new client, and another small job over the weekend. My business partner and I are actually having our best year so far. We'll see how that keeps up when the full impact of all this sets in.

DO WANT [26 Sep 2008|11:26pm]
Limited edition Mustang. It's actually called "The Dark Horse."

'love the rear window louvers. Reminds me of the Mach 1's

I had a black rental mustang the last time I was in LA. That was kinda fun. There a lot of other sports cars I would actually rather drive, but it beat a 4-door sedan.

Yesterday I did a site survey at a Bentley and Lambroghini dealership on Long Island. That was surreal. They had lots of other vintage and classic cars as well.

update [22 Sep 2008|05:50pm]
I had to spend 3 days in Greenwich and Stamford, CT this past week, which is not exactly my idea of fun. Thursday and Friday were occupied with setting up for the gig, which was Saturday evening. The event was a gala for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, which as far as I can figure out, exists to preserve fish and wildlife so that they can be hunted. Interesting.

There were a few high points however. On Thursday I was able to have dinner and some great conversation with stripey_girl at an Indian place in Stamford. On Saturday we were pretty much done with the setup, and explored some of the activities that had been set up for the guests. I got to do a run on the zip-line, which was very fun. I was a little bummed that I missed my chance to ride the ATVs though. Next year.

At the end of the event there was a fireworks show by Grucci (the kings of fireworks!). It wa amazing to watch from the minimum distance (300ft) away.

After the event I drove back to the city to attend the Contempt Anniversary party. It was a great time. It was nice to see everyone with a smile on their face. Special thanks to djluminal and anathemadevice for setting up the lighting beforehand.

This week I am mostly in and out of the office with meetings, and working on the designs for a series of upcoming events. I hoping to have enough tiem to get caught up on some "life" stuff as well.

I love that I'm sitting here watching one of the "Resident Evil" movies on SciFi in my crappy hotel and they keep overdubbing "motherfucker" as "motivator."

WTF?

Time to pour another.

From a crappy hotel in Connecticut:

Take a picture of yourself right now.
Don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair... Just take the picture.
Post the picture with no editing.
Post these instructions with your picture.

[17 Sep 2008|10:17pm]
Yesterday I was working a gig at a music venue in NYC that was being promoted as a place for meeting and event planners to bring their clients.

The theme of the event was "Party Like a Rockstar."

Someone thought it would be a good event to setup the "Rock Band" video game on the stage and let the attendees have a chance to "play" on a real stage, with sound, lights, video, etc.

It was just as horrible as I expected. Truly, truly bad. The only good party was that the event was short.

------

I'm off to Greenwich, CT tomorrow to setup for a gala event Saturday night. It's in a tent. I am so over tents. There will be a mechanical bull though, but I don't think I get to ride it. Damn.

I should be back in NYC late Saturday night after the event for the Contempt 10-year anniversary.

sometimes I am not so smart [04 Sep 2008|10:44am]
when defrosting the minifridge at the office, just be patient, and don't attack the ice with a sharp screwdriver and a hammer. Once you puncture the fridge and let the coolant off, the fridge is busted.
