The Sexy Science Behind Dare to Play

What is FSAD?

Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD) happens when blood doesn’t flow properly to the genitals, which prevents natural lubrication and reduces genital sensations and sensitivity.1,2 It’s more common than you might realize, affecting about 1 in 6 women.3 Think of it as the female equivalent of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Just like men need blood flow to the penis for arousal, women need blood flow to the clitoris, vulva, and vaginal tissues. When that blood flow is limited, arousal becomes difficult – and so does everything that follows.
A straight line of white cream or lotion on a plain white background.

How DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream Works

Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra®) has been proven for decades to increase blood flow. DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream uses the same trusted ingredient in a targeted topical formula designed for the unique anatomy of the female genitals.

It works by helping blood vessels in the clitoris and vulva relax and open, allowing increased blood flow – resulting in:

  • Warmth, swelling, tingling/throbbing, and sensitivity in the genital area
  • Increased natural lubrication
  • Enhanced readiness for intimacy

It has been shown to increase blood flow within 10-15 minutes after application.

We also got busy with a full clinical study of 200 women experiencing symptoms of FSAD.

Why Topical Application Hits the Spot

Unlike oral drugs which go through the entire body, this cream is applied directly where it’s needed, minimizing systemic side effects, and delivering faster, targeted results.

Where the Magic Happens

Getting powerful ingredients like sildenafil through the skin isn’t easy – most drugs carry an electrical charge, and the skin’s outer layer (called the stratum corneum) is built to keep them out.

That’s where DermaFlux™, a cutting-edge topical drug delivery system, comes in. This advanced cream technology helps deliver sildenafil deep into the tissues that matter for sexual arousal.

Cross-section diagram of skin layers showing Dare’s DermaFlux technology penetrating deeper than other sildenafil creams, with labeled features highlighting improved absorption and reduced surface stickiness.

The cream uses special salts—tri-sodium
citrate and potassium chloride—to help
push the active ingredient through the
skin’s toughest layer.

Normally, drugs can stick to the skin’s
surface due to hydrogen bonding. The
high salt content in this cream helps
prevent that stickiness, allowing
sildenafil to penetrate deeper into the
tissue.

The cream’s design includes both
water-loving (hydrophilic) and oil-loving
(hydrophobic) regions. This unique
structure helps the cream interact with
different skin layers, ensuring the drug
gets where it needs to go.

Ready to see why DARE to PLAY could be the best you've ever had?

Let's do it.

Not all creams are created equal. DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream is manufactured in a 503B outsourcing facility under pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
This means:

A tube labeled "DARE to PLAY" with text highlighting FDA standards, ingredient purity, controlled manufacturing, and product consistency.
A white cream tube labeled with notes stating it is not FDA-approved, lacks rigorous testing, and is sold without clear quality or safety assurances.

When it comes to your body and your health, consistency and safety aren’t optional – they are essential. You deserve a product that has been clinically studied, carefully formulated, and made to the highest safety and quality standards. With DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream, you can feel confident in what you’re using – every single time.

We got busy with a full clinical study.

We’ll never forget our first.

This is the first clinical study of its kind to demonstrate that this specific topical formulation of sildenafil, DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream, can support genital blood flow and arousal in women. Offering a non-hormonal option with a faster onset (10–15 minutes) and fewer side effects than oral medications, it represents a significant breakthrough for female sexual health.

Daré’s proprietary formulation of Sildenafil Cream was evaluated in the RESPOND Study, the first-ever randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial for a topical treatment targeting Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD) submitted to the FDA.

This Phase 2b trial included 200 premenopausal women experiencing symptoms of FSAD, such as reduced genital sensation and frustration during intimacy.

Safety Profile: The side effect profile of DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream was similar to placebo (cream without sildenafil added), with no serious safety concerns reported.

Study Results:
Women using DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream experienced the following improvements, as measured by clinically validated and FDA-reviewed endpoints

  • Increased genital arousal sensations
  • Improved sexual desire and orgasm
  • Reduced feelings of sexual distress and interpersonal difficulties resulting from the sexual difficulties

Key Findings:

Bar graph showing changes from baseline in arousal sensation, desire, and orgasm for two groups: Sildenafil cream and placebo cream, with Sildenafil showing higher increases in all domains.
Bar graph comparing changes from baseline in arousal sensation, desire, and orgasm between Sildenafil cream and placebo cream groups. Sildenafil shows higher increases in all domains.

In the Phase 2b trial, after 12 weeks, women who used DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream reported statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in genital arousal sensation (warmth and tingling) compared to those who used placebo cream. On average, Arousal Sensation scores (measured by a patient-reported questionnaire) increased by over 2 points with DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream, compared to almost no change with placebo cream. That’s a real, measurable difference.

Women who used DARE to PLAY Sildenafil Cream also showed improvement across other key areas of sexual function, including desire and orgasm.

Results shown are from a subset of 65 women in a 12-week clinical trial: 33 women who received Sildenafil Cream and 32 who received Placebo Cream.

The results were published in the Green Journal (Obstetrics & Gynecology), the official journal of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and highlighted on ACOG’s podcast The Green Room. Clinical trial results were also featured in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, the official journal of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health. See all references.

FAQs

DARE to PLAY is the only sildenafil cream for women supported by published, peer-reviewed clinical data. It was studied in clinical trials that used clinically validated and FDA-reviewed endpoints to measure results.

The cream is designed with a proprietary drug delivery system that helps sildenafil get into the vaginal and vulvar tissue, where it can act locally to increase blood flow.

Other sildenafil creams on the market haven’t been proven to work–they have not been studied, shown to absorb properly or published in peer-reviewed research, and are often compounded without consistent quality standards. DARE to PLAY stands apart because it’s rigorously developed, science-backed, and held to the highest standards of quality and clinical evidence.

Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra®) has a long-established safety profile in men. The topical formulation used in DARE to PLAY is designed to work locally (in the tissues that matter for sexual arousal) while minimizing how much of the drug enters the bloodstream. DARE to PLAY has been evaluated in clinical studies and was well tolerated, with no significant safety concerns reported. The safety findings from the Phase 2b clinical study have been published and are available on the DARE to PLAY website.

If you experience difficulty with sexual arousal, including a lack of physical response or reduced genital sensitivity during sexual activity, you may benefit from DARE to PLAY. A conversation with a licensed healthcare provider can help determine whether it is appropriate for you.

DARE to PLAY contains the same active ingredient as Viagra®, but it’s formulated specifically for women and applied directly where it’s needed. Unlike an oral pill, DARE to PLAY is a topical cream designed to work locally rather than systemically.

Apply the cream with your finger 10 to 15 minutes before sexual activity up to once per day. Slowly squeeze out a length of cream about 2 ½ inches long for one 2-gram dose. Lying on your back, apply half the cream on and around the clitoris and the area around the vaginal opening, avoiding areas with hair. Apply the rest of the cream just inside the vagina, rubbing the cream with a curved finger on the front wall of the vagina. Wash your hands after application. Once applied, do not wipe off any of the cream until after sexual activity.

Yes. In the Phase 2b clinical study, women did not use lubricants because the study was specifically designed to evaluate the impact of DARE to PLAY on the genital arousal response. However, there are no concerns about the compatibility of lubricants with the DARE to PLAY formulation.

Yes. DARE to PLAY has been studied in both pre-and postmenopausal women to evaluate safety, tolerability, and how the drug is absorbed in the body (pharmacokinetics). In these studies, the cream was well tolerated.

The Phase 2b clinical study enrolled healthy pre-and perimenopausal women aged 18 to 45 who had a diagnosis of Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD). Similar to FDA-approved products for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), FSAD trials conducted for FDA review typically focus on either pre-or postmenopausal populations.

In the Phase 2b clinical study, approximately one-third of the participants were taking an SSRI. An informal analysis compared women on SSRIs with those who were not and found that both groups showed positive trends in improved arousal sensations.

Many vaginal products contain ingredients that can weaken condoms, increasing the risk of breakage. DARE to PLAY was tested using ASTM D7661-10, a standardized method that ensures a product is safe to use with condoms. Based on these tests, DARE to PLAY is compatible with all male condoms except those made of polyurethane.

Yes. In the Phase 2b clinical study, women were allowed to use DARE to PLAY during oral sex, and it was well tolerated with no significant safety concerns. Prior to the Phase 2b clinical study, DARE to PLAY was also tested in a preclinical study to assess its effects on the oral mucosa. These tests showed that daily exposure for 28 days did not cause irritation inside the mouth.

The DARE to PLAY formulation does contain a proprietary combination of salts that support the absorption of sildenafil into the tissue. As a result, you may notice a mildly salty taste.

DARE to PLAY can be used in both situations! In the Phase 2b clinical study, about 20% of sexual events were solo, and women reported that these experiences were often more satisfying than partnered events. Partnered events sometimes occurred under less-than-ideal conditions, like limited time or distractions, which can affect pleasure.

No. DARE to PLAY is designed to complement, not replace, other approaches. It is a pharmacologic option focused on improving genital blood flow and physical responsiveness. Women often benefit most from a multimodal approach.

DARE to PLAY is designed to improve physical arousal by increasing genital blood flow. Many women find that enhancing physical responsiveness can also help restore desire and confidence. In the Phase 2b clinical study, women with low desire due to diminished physical arousal sensations experienced improved desire following use of DARE to PLAY.

If low desire is influenced by emotional or relationship factors, combining DARE to PLAY with other approaches—like counseling or therapy—may provide the best results.
