and quasit, for dealing with levels of my neurosis I wasn't even aware of.

Even outside those three, though, I feel incredibly lucky to know the people I know.

For you non WoWers in the audience, I'll put it in simple terms: Guy asks me to enter into a mutually beneficial agreement to kill some shit and get some stuff. I agree. We start killing stuff, he makes a joke about killing faggots (because, apparently, it rhymes with maggots, and as such is merely a harmless rhyme, which leads me to wonder if I can go make harmless rhymes about killing the piggers--no, of course I'm not going to), I ditch him. He begs for me to come back (because, quite frankly, he sucks) and along the way drops THIS little gem.

Went to the beach today...good GOD, it was hot out there on Makaha-side. I actually dehydrated and drank two twenty-ounce Arizona iced teas in the space of an hour (the first in about five minutes) because I was SO THIRSTY. I couldn't even moisten my lips.

I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yesterday, which was excellent and highly recommended.

And to everyone going OMG HARRY POTTER OMG OMG OMG please QUIET DOWN. I know who the HBP is, I know who dies, whatever, I can wait to read the damned book. Lord, you people are freaks.

So I went to see Batman Begins, and here's what I thought:

Overall it was an impressive movie. I like...the guy who plays Alfred...in every role I see him in, and Christian Bale and Liam Neeson are always satisfying. Even though I know I'm going to get shit for it, I like Katie Holmes, I'm sorry, I know she's just a puppet on Crazy Cruisey's thumb now, but I like her.

Of course, such a movie, as they always do, has left me with moral and ethical questions.

Although I am most likely a fool for wanting additional shades of grey in a comic book movie with ethical black and white, I was distinctly disappointed that Bruce Wayne's incredible hypocrisy was never pointed out to him. He wants to save the citizens of Gotham from fear and destruction, and to do so, he flips cop cars, destroys buildings and critical infrastructure (not to mention public transit) and shows a general disregard for the lives of the people he's supposed to be helping. Alfred notes ONCE that Wayne is only lucky that no one was killed. I personally find this irrelevant--because at the time of his action, Wayne didn't seem to give a shit if those cops lived or died, much less the innocent civilians on the roadway.

I was also quite disappointed with his treatment of the dock workers unloading the drug-packed stuffed animals and what-have-you off the boat. Were they doing something wrong knowingly? Perhaps. But had they protested, they most likely would have been summarily murdered--and to what end? A more easily cowed (or bribed) worker would have been brought in to finish the job. So Bruce Wayne risks his life to "combat injustice." Thank you, wealthy white prince, for your saving graces; this poor Hispanic dock worker could not afford to fly to China to live on whatever he could steal only to be rescued by a paramilitary organization and trained to fight crime for seven years--he has parents, a wife, and children to feed. His life is ruled by the fear you claim to combat--and yet even when your home is destroyed, you can blithely proclaim that you will rebuild it from the ground up in the way it was left--because your livelihood was never at risk. You can afford to operate in a world of moral absolutes because you have a bulletproof vest, a grappling hook gun, and a mask to protect you from even the slightest retribution. The workers down on the ground do not have that freedom--but they can still become objects for your terrorization.

My point here is not that poverty should act as a barrier to just action. My point is that justice without mercy is nothing but egotism of the highest degree, and fear in the name of justice is no more comfortable than fear in the name of profit.

Frankly, I wish more had been made of the efforts to combat corruption that do not involve high-tech weaponry and a rocket-powered car. Librarians, schoolteachers, businessmen, and even children fight it daily with no reprieve in an isolated manor with a dedicated manservant.

Again, I am perhaps a fool for expecting such commentary in this medium. However, that does not mean that I cannot wish to SEE such commentary SOMEWHERE--because those simple men and women fighting as best they can do far more to advance the cause of social justice than a man in a cape and mask ever could.

I caved and bought my icons back. I missed them. And now I look totally ridiculous but in reality I'm totally awesome.

It is hot as hell here, and we were trapped in the house today because it's being painted and they taped all the doors and windows shut, but luckily my mom invested in a smoothie maker and we are experimenting with fruit, ice cream and yogurt. We've found that fresh-squeezed OJ with bananas and some vanilla yogurt and ice cream is delicious.
