A Luther Fanmix

So this is a bit different than the mixes I usually post, but I hope you enjoy it. Credit where credit is due: this is entirely 9thsymphony's fault. She's the one who suggested it in the first place, and she also suggested two of the songs (Gun, Roads), which I decided to incorporate. Go blame her if it's terrible.

Sinnerman is included as an extra because I originally tended to use it for the mix, but a) it doesn't quite fit the mix tonally, and b) it's amazing but it's a long ass song.

A note: This mix isn't based around the character of John Luther per se (though obviously he's a big part of it), but rather the overarching themes of the show in general.

Music For a Former Companion

Okay, okay, so I (95%) promise this will be my last Who-related mix until it's time for me to do the Series 6 one. I've overdone it for sure. But this one kind of snuck up on me and eventually became a thing. It began back when I was making my Companions Mix and it wouldn't leave me alone. Though I dearly love all the companions for their own individual brands of awesomeness, I am an unabashed Donna Noble stan, and I couldn't resist making a mix for her. This started out as a tiny EP, but eventually ballooned into what it is now. And I admit, it is a slight retread of that previous mix, with the quotes and picspam and stuff, but whatever, deal with it. :D

She started out so mundane, so normal, so oblivious, so obsessed with trivial matters, so unaware of her potential -- so much like the rest of us. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that; but through knowing the Doctor, she, like others before her, became so much more. What made her special was already there in the beginning: her brashness, her bluntess, her kindness, her understanding, her unwillingness to back down, her Super Temp skills (with which she helped save the day more than once). But she was unable or unwilling to see the evidence of the larger universe around her, which I think gets to the heart of Doctor Who in general: sometimes all one really needs to see the extraordinary and to be extraordinary is an open mind, open eyes, and an open heart (though a time machine doesn't hurt). Hell, just noticing stuff is half the battle, and the Doctor is the ultimate paying-attention catalyst to all he comes into contact with.

Aside from Donna's general awesomeness and amazing personal growth, her relationship with the Doctor is what I loved most of all, because it hit upon my ultimate kryptonite: antagonistic BFFs. They weren't afraid to give each other shit when deserved, but they also brought out the best in each other and supported each other and were awesome together. I'll never truly forgive RTD for taking that away from both of them in the cruelest way possible.

In this post you'll find an EP of songs for the Series 4 Specials, a mix for series 5 (as always, one song for each episode), and a not terribly impressive mini picspam of series 5. I didn't originally intend to do one for the specials, but the songs just kind of fell into place by accident. The series mix is a lot more mellow than I anticipated, but I hope you'll find it lovely and the songs applicable. It's been in the works for a couple of months (off and on) now, but I decided to wait until the finale aired in the US. Regardless:

A Star Spangled Mix

With Independence Day being nigh, I thought this mix that randomly popped into my head would be semi-appropriate. Not all of the songs are specifically/literally about America, but to me they feel very indicative of the American Experience (whatever that is, of course) and an American sound/atmosphere/vibe (whatever those may be, of course). I wanted them to reflect the conflicting, often contradictory feelings and beliefs that living here can elicit.

I'm not entirely sure what this mix is, tbqh; it's really just a mix of randomness, with songs both old and new. And sorry I didn't really try with the artwork So, um, enjoy!

Hello, back again with an inconsistent though hefty batch that's been building sporadically since last year, mostly through different challenge communities. Unfortunately, school and work had consumed my life utterly, and I'm only just now detoxing from my insane comprehensive exam (if I ever have a conversation about Foucault, Baudrillard or Lacan again it'll be too soon).

Also, I almost never wear pink or yellow but I totally covet Betty's awesome coat and yellow/navy dress.

Hello! I come bearing not one, but 4 mood themes, as well as a fanmix and mini picspam of recent Doctor Who companions, Rose, Martha and Donna. I know most of the conversation for the last forever has been about 10’s exit from the show, and while that’s sad and all, I don’t think the show would be nearly as good or grounded without effective companions. I think RTD’s done a pretty great job of creating three complex, fierce, well-rounded and realistic characters with their own individual strengths, who don't just stand around and look pretty. They're genuine heroines that I wish I had had to look up to as a child. Sure, there can be bouts of whining or lovestruck moonyness, but they spend the majority of their time being awesome, and I hope that this practice continues (I’m looking at you, Moffat).

Er, not entirely dial-up friendly, if your connection's suuuper slow.

Note: the Companions mood theme is taken entirely from the individual mood themes; I took my favorites from the Rose, Martha and Donna themes to make it, so don't expect something completely different. Fanmix & Picspam

This is a largely mellow, strummy mix, suitable for wandering and rambling, but there are a few up-tempo tracks here and there. So that I don’t clog up the picspam section, I’m going to offer an incoherent semi-explanation of most of the tracks after the link. As with most of my mixes, I tried to do this somewhat chronologically, to represent many of the similar experiences companions have had, and I tried to choose songs that could be applicable to all 3 (there are varying degrees of aptness; for example, several of the songs have something of a romantic thread, which really wouldn't be applicable to Donna, or would largely remain unreciprocated for the others, but nonetheless the overall tone of the song remains). And I'll just say upfront that Donna is my favorite (Super Temp!) but I tried to give them equal coverage (though poor Martha got a bit shafted in her season, so her parts were trickier).

I'll try to keep this somewhat brief: 1 and 2 reflect a desire to leave home and familiarity, from either a longing for adventure, a sense of alienation from the familiar, or both. 3 is simply about the feeling of pure, floating joy one can have when travelling with The Doctor. 4-6 are about how the companions, while enjoying the more gleeful aspects of TARDIS travel, are also acutely attuned to the danger, scariness and sorrow that comes with it as well. Also, they have to navigate the darkness within The Doctor himself that their presence often curbs.

With 7, there’s always some point (sometimes in every other episode) in which they'll be separated, and there's always a desperation to find each other once more, whether it’s Rose's determination to return from her parallel universe, Martha's year-long journey through the Master's dystopic Earth, or Donna's desperation to find the strange man with the blue box who once ruined her wedding. 10 acknowledges that this time with The Doctor is not without consequence, and at some point the companions pay a price, willingly or unwillingly – Rose absorbing the energy of the TARDIS, Martha's lost year, and Donna's sacrifice to save a Doctor she's never even met in Turn Left, as well the memory loss she’s dreading once she becomes the DoctorDonna.

As for 11, eventually, they have to come down from that high of the wonders of the universe, and find a way to live a normal life, or, in Donna's case, live with the lingering feeling that something is missing. (In looking for quotes for the mix, I noticed how similar Donna's last words as the DoctorDonna are to 10's last words in End of Time.) I kind of went a little overboard with the quotes towards the end, but I felt I needed all 3 of them represented; hopefully it doesn't impede your browsing too much.

Welcome to my first picspam: My 10 Favorite TV Comedies of the Decade!
I picked comedy specifically because I knew that if I just did a "Best TV Shows" list, it would be ALL dramas and hour-long shows (Lost, Mad Men, Battlestar, Dexter, The Wire, Deadwood, Everwood, Veronica Mars, Life on Mars, The Middleman etc.). Plus, I JUST finished finals and after the semester from hell, I needed to work on something cheerful.

Slight Disclaimer: I limited the field to half-hour comedies. No cartoons (otherwise Aqua Teen, Daria and Clone High would have been on the list), no panel or sketch shows (so no Nevermind the Buzzcocks), and no pop culture shows (so no Soup).
Plus, there are some shows I haven't had time to watch, like It's Always Sunny or Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I can't really include something I haven't seen; furthermore, I've only included shows I've seen in their entirety, so shows like How I Met Your Mother, which I've only seen 2 seasons of, are also not on the list. I would also highly recommend any of these shows to anyone.

Spaced (1999-2001)

Favorite Episodes: 1x01 Beginnings, 1x03 Art, 1x04 Battles, 1x05 Chaos

This crazy little cult British show was short-lived at only 14 episodes, but it was sublime. Made for nerds, by nerds, it's stuffed to capacity with pop culture references, but also a lot of heart, absurdism and subversiveness. And Daisy Steiner manages to be a great, layered, flawed, hilarious female lead in what could have been purely a boy's club.

Black Books (2000-2004)

"Let's paaaar..." "Don't you dare use the word 'party' as a verb in this shop!"
"I'm a quitter. I come from a long line of quitters. It's amazing I'm here at all."
Favorite Eps: 1x01 Cooking the Books, 3x02 Elephants and Hens, 3x04 A Little Flutter, 3x06 Party

Oh look, another cult British show. If anything, Black Books is even more absurdist and sitcomy than Spaced, and takes the cliche of the drunken misanthrope to new comedic heights. This is one of the only shows in which I can guarantee anyone will laugh if it's on (this theory was actually tested at a party earlier this year with, I might add, resounding success) because, while it's a smart show, it excels at simple, almost universal humor--pratfalls, sight gags, etc.

The Office (UK) (2001-2003)

"There are limits to my comedy. There are things that I'll never laugh at. The handicapped. Because there's nothing funny about them. Or any deformity. It's like when you see someone look at a little handicapped and go 'Ooh, look at him, he's not able-bodied. I am, I'm prejudiced.' Yeah, well, at least the little handicapped fella is able-minded. Unless he's not, it's difficult to tell with the wheelchair ones. Just give generously to them all."
Favorite Eps: 1x03 The Quiz, 1x04 Training, Christmas Special
Best Musical Interlude: Free Love on the Free Love Freeway

Here's a slightly more mainstream British show that brought awkward comedy to what is undoubtedly its apex. As much as I love the US Office, Jim and Pam could never be as adorable as Tim and Dawn are. I do have to thank whatever celestial being might be up there for not yet giving me a boss like David Brent.

Arrested Development (2003-2006...)

"So this is the magic trick, huh?"
"Illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money...[sees children watching] or cocaine!"
"I've made a huge mistake."
Favorite Eps: 2x04 Good Grief, 2x13 Motherboy XXX, 1x09 Pier Pressure/3x08 Making a Stand (Lessons!), ...okay, all of them.

"Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together. It's Arrested Development." So sayth Ron Howard to the gentle strums of a ukulele. This show is so layered, so rife with call-backs and in-jokes, and so wonderful that it's simply a comedic masterpiece. It will also make you appreciate the (hopefully) relative sanity of your own family. It also gave us a cavalcade of legendary tertiary characters, such as J. Walter Weatherman, STEVE HOLT!, Annyong, Carl Weathers, Lucille II, Barry Zuckercorn, Kitty, Bob Loblaw, Ann Veal (her?), and my personal favorite, Franklin Delano Bluth. Just remember, it ain't easy bein' white. Or brown.

The Office (US) (2005-)

"Abraham Lincoln once said that, 'If you're a racist, I will attack you with the North,' and those are the principles I carry with me in the workplace."
"Why are you the way that you are? I hate so much about the things that you choose to be."
"Sometimes, you just have to be the boss of dancing."
"That's what she said...or he said."
Favorite Eps: 1x02 Diversity Day, 2x01 The Dundies, 2x22 Casino Night, 3x12/13 The Salesman/The Return

That's a lot of quotes, but Michael Scott really does get some of the best lines in television today, despite his overall cringeworthiness. Whereas the UK version relies heavily on its leads, this incarnation's strength lies in its supporting players. Stanley, Oscar, Angela, Andy, Kelly, Creed and the others in the "background" give the show a richness and diversity of personality, which in turn gives the show more flexibility and scope.

30 Rock (2006-)

"Why are you wearing a tux?" "It's after six. What am I, a farmer? "
"This is untoward! This is not toward!"
"Affirmative action was designed to keep women and minorities in competition with each other to distract us while white dudes inject AIDS into our chicken nuggets. That's a metaphor."
Favorite Eps: 1x07 Tracy Does Conan, 2x04 Rosemary's Baby, 2x14 Sandwich Day, 3x16 Apollo, Apollo

I want to be Tina Fey when I grow up. No, really, I do. Except for the acting part. Her show is sharp, witty, goofy and adorable, with a supporting cast to die for. I'd like to take it out behind a middle school and get it pregnant.

The Big Bang Theory (2007-)

"I give up. He's impossible!"
"I can't be impossible; I exist! I think what you meant to say is, 'I give up; he's improbable.'"
Favorite Eps: 1x04 The Luminous Fish Effect, 2x11 The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis, 2x18 The Work Song Nanocluster, 3x08 The Adhesive Duck Deficiency

This show is super cute and geeky and hilarious. However, it can be very uneven and sometimes relies too heavily on tired sex jokes and repetitive sitcomy character tropes, but it is by the guy who made 2 1/2 Men, so I probably shouldn't expect miracles. But regardless, the cast is awesome and they bring it consistently.

Although these shows are brand new and haven't quite reached their full potential, they are so far showing tons of promise and I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

Modern Family (2009-)

WTF: Why the face? This show is so freaking adorable, I can't even stand it. It's my favorite new show this year, and every single character will melt your heart and give you diabetes. Also, I want to adopt Manny.

Community (2009-)

"To me, religion is like Paul Rudd. I see the appeal and I would never take it away from anyone, but I would also never stand in line for it."

I love The Soup, so I decided to give this show a try; it started out okay, but the episodes kept getting funnier and funnier and it seems to be finding its rhythm. Troy and Abed are officially the funniest duo on television right now.

Daily Show/Colbert Report (1999-) and (2005-)

Jon:"If you don't stick to your values when they're being tested, they're not values, they're hobbies."
"Please stop calling people 'Hitler' when you disagree with them. It demeans you, it demeans your opponent, and, to be honest, it demeans Hitler. That guy worked too many years, too hard, to be that evil, to have any Tom, Dick, and Harry come along and say, 'Hey, you're bein' Hitler.' No, you know who was Hitler? Hitler!"

Stephen: "Where does Congress get off saying that people have a right to Habeas Corpus? It's like they're holding these truths to be self-evident!"
"Now, I don't see color. People tell me I'm white and I believe them because police officers call me 'sir'".

Okay, so this is cheating a bit; there's two of them, and they're not technically sitcoms, but both shows have been consistently hilarious, biting and insightful over the years. They're just awesome; there's really nothing more to say.

Mixes of Crack and Symbiosis

I've finally finished my Master and Doctor mix(es), yay!

If you're looking for something shippy or cracktastic, scroll down a bit to see the B-side of this mix.

While The Doctor and The Master aren't brothers in the literal sense (though a couple of the songs, "Oh Napoleon" and "Curs In the Weeds," are specifically about wayward sons/brothers/immediate family), they are the last sons of the Time Lords. The Master kept The Doctor imprisoned for that whole year when he could have easily killed him, and despite The Master's actions, The Doctor wants only to forgive him and keep him alive. While he gave the Sycorax "no second chances," The Master, who is responsible for millions of deaths, gets nothing but second chances. And I think that most of what The Master does is directly in relation to The Doctor: The Doctor is a steward of the Earth? Well, I'll just make them my slaves, that'll show him. He's like a little brother trying desperately to gain the attention of or one-up his older brother. I think their relation is epitomized in this exchange:

The Doctor: Regenerate. Just regenerate. Please. Please! Just regenerate! Come on!
The Master: And spend the rest of my life imprisoned with you?
The Doctor: But you've got to. Come on. It can't end like this. You and me, all the things we've done. Axons, remember the Axons? And the Daleks? We're the only two left. I have no one else.

Their relationship, as the last remaining Time Lords, is symbiotic. The Master may be an evil twin, of sorts (if only symbolically), but they are nevertheless connected and are two sides of the same coin and all that business. No matter how badly The Master treats him or others (and it obviously breaks The Doctor's heart every time he does), The Doctor still tries to tame or pacify him, but not defeat him like many of his other enemies -- like he's just his screwup younger brother constantly in and out of rehab. They are family, in the most human sense of the word. Much more John Smith and Harold Saxon than The Doctor and The Master in these moments.

Well, anyway, that's my two cents. Hopefully the songs reflect that.

I haven't been feeling terribly creative (unless you count my super-ingenious center cropping), but I wanted to get these out anyway before the new semester starts (today, boo!). I wanted to do BSG especially, because I've been watching forever and it's almost over. There was a lot of ground to cover, so I decided to stick with one episode (Of course, it's the one in which their environment is completely washed out, so most ended up B&W). For reference to the other show I iconed (a completely rambling Merlin wank), see end of post.

And of course, girly movies. The novel of Atonement is better than the movie, which is true in most cases (except maybe Fight Club), but the movie was very pretty regardless. A Little Princess and Strictly Ballroom are old-school loves of mine, and I couldn't not make icons of all the pretty, pretty dancing. (I do apologize in advance for #44. He was just so ridiculous and sparkly.) /End looong ramble. So anyway, icons!

In which I try to figure out why I watch this show:
OMG. I'm not entirely sure why I enjoy Merlin so much. It's...not a terribly good show. Every episode is like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure/Mad Libs. Literally every episode goes like this: (1)Someone is mortally ill and/or enchanted/(2)suspected of witchcraft and arrested/(3)has to fight someone to the death (choose one), so one of the cast members must (a)go on a quest to find the magic ingredient to save said ill person/(b)break arrested party out of the castle dungeon/(c)find/create the magical object/spell that will assist the person with their fight.
And in every episode, each character will do exactly this: Uther will be an ass and will be outsmarted by the not-terribly-intelligent people around him, Gaius will be very concerned about someone's well being, Arthur will be a bitch, but will learn his lesson by the end (until next episode), Morgana will be outraged by something, Gwen will be adorable but pretty pointless, and Merlin will be awesomely dorky but will simultaneously struggle with not being "out" as a warlock.

Maybe that's why I enjoy it. It's awfully campy, which is always a plus. And it's kind of the gayest show on television without actually (canonically) gay characters, to the point where there's almost nothing "sub" about the subtext. If it weren't for this and Merlin's unrelenting dorkiness, I would have given up on it a while ago. But anyway, it's basically just crack, though here's hoping they raise the game a bit next season.

Here's a 30 Rock / Liz Lemon mix I made. (It's my first non-Who one!) It's a somewhat random blend of 80's cheesiness and bouncy indie. It was kind of tough finding songs to fit (at least in my music library. Most of it's pretty twee and not very aggressive. Lemon's hardcore.) But I managed to stick with her more whimsical side. Enjoy and bow down to your nerd queen.

I kinda have no explanations this time, except for some visuals, and even those have tenuous connections to the lyrics at best. Yeah, so, it's been a while. School and work conspired to keep me away from many enjoyable things, but finals are done and I'm back, so yay! I was able to do a couple of LIMS contests for the first few weeks of the semester (30 Rock, Doctor Who [Donna]), so here are those, plus a bunch of Christmasy icons.
