The TRUST Project is an interdisciplinary initiative designed to strengthen responsible public communication and media practices, with a particular focus on the complex socio-political landscape of the Western Balkans. Despite significant economic progress and steps toward stabilization through EU integration processes, the region remains prone to both longstanding and emerging security challenges. These include remnants of conflicts from the 1990s, radical and violent behaviors fueled by historical grievances, organized crime, terrorism, pandemics, pollution, and the pervasive impact of misinformation. A 2021 survey (#SecuriMeter) across Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo, with over 6,000 participants, highlighted that while 64% of citizens feel satisfied with the security situation, concerns persist in health, food, and socio-political security, both in physical and digital spaces.
In this context, TRUST aims to equip professionals in public communication, media, education, and institutional settings—including journalists, public officials, educators, and communication specialists—with practical, evidence-based tools to identify, prevent, and respond to harmful narratives, verbal violence, and misinformation. By emphasizing the prevention of secondary victimization, ethical communication standards, and democratic resilience, the project seeks to empower individuals and institutions to navigate high-risk communication environments responsibly.
Acknowledging that politics operates on multiple levels and that education is central to the region’s integral development, TRUST actively encourages the participation of both experienced and emerging higher education institutions (HEIs), faculties, and individuals with fewer opportunities. This inclusive approach fosters collective regional resilience, enabling participants to contribute meaningfully to addressing security threats, reinforcing social cohesion, and enhancing the Western Balkans’ capacity to respond to internal and external pressures.
TRUST combines academic research, case-based learning, and applied methodologies to translate complex discourse analysis and crisis communication theories into accessible guidance and practical frameworks. By integrating insights from media studies, security studies, crisis communication, and social sciences, the project supports professionals in fostering transparent, responsible, and inclusive public discourse while strengthening regional trust and resilience in the face of evolving challenges.
The TRUST Project aims to strengthen responsible, ethical, and resilient public communication and media practices in the Western Balkans in response to persistent socio-political and security challenges. Its primary objective is to equip journalists, public officials, educators, and communication professionals with practical, evidence-based tools to identify, prevent, and respond to harmful narratives, verbal violence, and misinformation in both traditional and digital media.
The project seeks to promote ethical communication standards that prevent secondary victimization, protect vulnerable groups, and reinforce public trust in institutions and media. By addressing communication dimensions of health, food, and socio-political security, TRUST contributes to regional resilience against radicalization, disinformation, and crisis-driven instability.
Through the translation of academic research into applied handbooks, training materials, and practical frameworks, TRUST bridges theory and practice. It further encourages inclusive participation of higher education institutions, early-career professionals, and individuals with fewer opportunities, fostering regional cooperation, democratic values, and sustainable public discourse.
