I’ve recently watched Doctor Who for the first time and got caught up in the romance of the Tenth Doctor and Rose. Oddly enough, I didn’t love Rose and while I felt their story was touching, I didn’t really fall for it until series 4. But by that point, I was in it and my heart was wrung out like it hadn’t been by a television show in at least eight years. While Rose has never been my favorite character, I love their love. The devotion and respect they have for one another. And that the Doctor stays true in his own way.
This is a rather angsty mix but after finishing series 4, it’s where anyone’s heart is at. I’m in mourning at the moment. And there’s an awful lot of space/sky imagery. It’s my first Doctor Who mix; indulge me.

1. Strange Magic by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)
I wanted to start with something a little more on the uplifting side. A song that expresses their affection for one another.

You’re walking meadows in my mind,

making waves across my time

2. Oh My Stars by Andrew Belle
I hear this song as a duet between the Doctor and Rose. A sort of getting-to-know you, sweet song. Do you feel what I feel? Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

Rose: Tell me all about your foreign wars
And all about the photographs that line your drawers
Ten: Cause I know a lot about closing doors
But not enough about what opens up yours

3. Boats & Birds by Gregory & the Hawk
This track makes me think of what the Doctor and Rose give each other, he makes her feel free, she gives him companionship. This song also has a lot of beautiful sky/elements analogy that I like with them.

But you can skyrocket away from me
And never come back if you find another galaxy
Far from here with more room to fly
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by

4. The Sun and The Moon by Mae
Doctor’s POV. Falling in love. While also having lovely sky/elements analogies, the lyrics really fit a man who is well traveled and has spent a lot of time doing so. In addition, when the lyrics mention “forever”, I’m reminded of how Rose tells him on more than one occassion that she’s going to stay with him forever.

So when you say forever,
can’t you see
you’ve already captured me.

5. Nexus by Sarah Fimm
This song is a little more abstract but again, with the lovely imagery. The definition of “nexus” is: A connection or series of connections linking two or more things. I can’t help but think of “Bad Wolf” when I read that definition.

6. Stay by Shakespeare’s Sister
I love this song. It sounds a little corny at first but the change in tone once it hits the chorus is beautiful and it takes on a real threatening and epic quality at the same time. The bridge, I tend to hear from a 3rd party POV, almost as a sinister voice that threatens the Doctor, keeping him at a loss. And as for the simple chorus (Stay with me), there’s nothing to come back to but the Doomsday moment that changed everything and so that’s what the artwork reflects and why that is the name of the mix.

7. Here Without You by 3 Doors Down
Doctor POV. I know this song is overused but the lyrics are such a wonderful match for the Doctor’s POV in series 3 that I couldn’t leave it out. Plus, I think it has a nice melody.

A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don’t think I can look at this the same
But all the miles that separate
Disappear now when I’m dreaming of your face

8. 1000 Oceans by Tori Amos
Pure Rose POV heartache during their separation (and perhaps 2nd separation)

These tears I’ve cried
I’ve cried 1000 oceans
And if it seems
I’m floating in the darkness
Well, I can’t believe that I would keep
Keep you from flying
And I would cry 1000 more
If that’s what it takes
To sail you home

9. Set Fire To The Third Bar by Snow Patrol feat. Martha Wainwright
I’m sure this is on a million Doctor/Rose fanmixes but it’s the first song that I thought of as them and this is my first DW mix so…Duel POV. (And just looking at the art, gah! he kills me with his facial expression when he’s running. He looks so happy. *sob*)

10. Different Stars by Trespassers William
Rose POV. Some more of Rose’s thoughts during their separation. And when the song mentions that “the weight it must be light wherever you are/And i know you don’t think twice wherever you are”, I think of that in terms of how the Doctor forces himself to move on. He pushes painful thoughts from his mind and avoids them as much as possible. And Rose knows this about him.

So i will hum alone, too far from you
All that i say now is nothing to you
We will lie under different stars
I am where i am and you’re where you are, you’re where you are.

11. The Letter by Natalie Merchant
Ah the stages of grief. Rose POV. I like how this gentle song starts with anger and then moves to acceptance.

If I ever write this letter

But I don’t know where to send it

Heaven knows where you live
Heaven only knows

12. The Scientist by Willie Nelson
Doctor POV. This song has been used on so many mixes and fandoms, it’s not even funny but I don’t think it fits anyone as well as it fits the Doctor. And this version by Willie Nelson has a real raw quality to it that I find breathtakingly beautiful.

I haven't really had a lot of time to log on lately but I have also just been very sad this week. My best friend who has been staying with me for the last four months is leaving this weekend.
She came down from Minnesota after living there for six years, in a trial separation. There have been some other things going on in her life and as a result she quickly decided to go back to Minnesota. While I don't think she's making the worst decision I am not sure that it is the best. And even worse than that I am being selfish because I am mostly sad that I will not have her anymore. I have loved having her here. I haven't made any friends in this town and my husband is gone during the week an I'm alone.
So it is been wonderful to have the company. But not just the company my best friend. We have been going to Zumba together and it's going to be so hard to go without her. We keep each other motivated and on track. I've loved having someone to go with me & the dogs to the park, the store, etc...
I've been crying so hard. I just don't want her to go. :(

Writer's Block: Pros and Cons

Funny. I was just speaking to someone the other day about this.
Many people like to say that as technology expands, humans lose "human interaction". That we, as a society, become more disassociated. I feel like this is untrue.
In my experience, technology has increased human interaction. Prior to texting, there were family members that I rarely spoke to. Reaching them through a phone call or in person was difficult but I found that they would rapidly and frequently reply to text messages. Now, we have much more communication AND it seems to create a stronger connection when we do see each other in person. It eliminates that awkward, "we really don't know each other well so what in the world do we talk about" feeling.

It allows you, via social networking, to connect with old friends and rebuild relationships. It aids you in finding completely new friends. I have made many real and fun friendship via Livejournal. I've also begun meeting new local people in my area via Google+. And by following my gym's Facebook page am developing new friendships with the people who attend the Zumba classes I go to - so they become more than just a face in the class.

There's also a wealth of information available via the internet and the speed of communication is fantastic.

Sure, there are negative impacts. All good things must come in moderation and I think the internet/texting/social media is highly addictive for young people. I think that it's not outrageous to consider teaching young people to not rely on technology too much and to be wary of it. Please, no teen suicides because of an idiotic post on Facebook. Also, texting while driving. But moderation also needs to be taught in regards to food so it's not a completely unique problem.

saidk sent me a message asking me a question but I can't answer because you have messages turned off. Here is my answer: Hola. It is no bother. Joss Whedon said that in the commentary for the episode "Chosen" which was the very last Buffy episode. I do not have the full commentary in writing. You could hear it on an English DVD though. Crystal Hola. Se iis ninguna molestia. Joss Whedon dijo que en el comentario para el episodio "La elegida" que fue el episodio de Buffy último. No tengo el comentario de manera escrita. Being Human, Game Of Thrones and The Borgias

I can cross off a few things on my list. Game Of Thrones, The Borgias and Being Human (US).

SPOILERS IN POST

I've watched the first 3 episodes of Game Of Thrones (that's all that has aired right now.) Extremely well-acted and the costuming/sets are divine. The storyline is a bit disturbing and depressing but it is compelling television for sure.

I watched the first episode of The Borgias. I'll eventually get to the rest but I'm sure to be slower to do so since it's political intrigue which tends to move more slowly. The sets in this one were INCREDIBLE. Again, extremely well acted. You can tell a high-budget show when you see one.

I also watched all 13 episodes of Being Human (US). Loved it. Not the best show ever yet good enough that you're ready to jump into the next episode. And the last 3 were fantastic. Sam Witwer as Aidan is going to give Jensen Ackles a run for his money as the best-cryer-on-tv. He made me cry twice.
Aidan and Josh are both likeable from the get-go though I did find Josh to be rude a couple of times. Josh gets some very funny one-liners in there sometimes though the show definitely leans more towards dark drama rather than a dramedy.
I find Sam Witwer incredibly attractive but I promise that's not why I prefer his character. I find his storyline and personality to be slightly more compelling. I love how he's sort of the father-figure in the bunch, always there with sound advice and a caring protective hand. I got upset a few times that he was so [i]there[/i] for Josh and Sally and they weren't for him. I wanted Josh and Sally to understand what it was like for Aidan, what a vampire clan is willing to do to him and how it feels to be a vamp. I ADORE ADORE ADORE the beautiful tiny flashbacks to him and his son. The only downside to Aidan's story for me was Rebecca. I was ready for her to go about halfway through. But how Aidan treated her was beautiful (except the murdering her part. lol)
I will say that I have [u]never[/u] enjoyed a werewolf storyline before but I do enjoy Josh's very much. They moved his story faster than I expected them too. I liked that we met his family. I like Nora too (that's my sister's name. :D ) and found the storyline with her to be enjoyable. The ending when she and the wolf stare at each other under the door was SUCH a fantastic shot.
Sally it took me awhile to warm to. I liked the actress right away. I find her to be very real. She feels like a girl I'd work with or know from school an I love authenticity in acting. But she was SO self-centered for the first 10 episodes or so of the show. The guys would come home and she would immediately jump into how awful her life was and all the bad things going on and I got very irritated. I started saying, "Counseling time!" whenever she appeared. But by ep 11 they seemed to have worked this out and she rocked the last three eps. I even felt scared and worried about her at one point. I called it on the fiance from the pilot episode too. (I've never seen the UK version).

Oh and can I say that I LOVE their house? I'd be shining that baby up.

Can't wait for season 2!

This is kind of a personal-feeling selection. My brother Jon loved this song. It's sad (but beautiful) as it's really written from the pov of someone with very low self-worth and a lot of emotional issues which Alanis Morissette has admitted to struggling with. I can see why my brother identified with the song. While he hid it often behind a joking attitude, he didn't really think very highly of himself. And he had experienced worse thing than he ever should have had to. So sad because he was a great man. ♥
