Please register as a stem cell donor and perhaps save a life!

Please register as a stem cell/bone marrow donor and ask others to do the same!
On the Hungarian blog Segíts Szilvinek! (Help Szilvi!), Ramóna is recruiting stem cell donors for Szilvia Simon and asking us to spread the word. On June 24th, she wrote that “There is nobody, nobody in all the world whose blood would at least approximately match hers, and has registered as a donor” and that they were now trying to find cord blood for Szilvi. Ramóna also wrote that many adults and children are waiting for donors.

crossposted to _take__action_, a_better_world, advocates, changeyourworld, good_ideas and makeadifference

Culinary student project...yay.

Hey guys! I have a restaurant concept that very much falls into the natural living philosophy. The concept I have is very much geared towards people like us, especially vegetarians and vegans looking for fine dining.

That being said, I need as many people as possible to go and order from my menu (not for real money, obviously), so I can finish my Cost Control class project. This is an on-going, evolving menu as I progress through school. At the moment I need to determine the popularity of each entree to do book-keeping type stuff. Yeah, so that's all. If you could take a sec to help me out, that would be AWESOME! Thanks!

=Kat=

I might have x-posted a little...

Under the Duvet by Marian Keyes

I'm off to a very slow start on my 50 books. Winter makes me lazy. Book 1 of 50--HA!

I read this collection of essays on the airplane and in various airports on my way to Argentina, and enjoyed it as a vacation read. I felt that the quality of essays did vary, but I can't think of any essay that I didn't enjoy at least a little bit. As a whole, the collection is an honest and slightly humorous description of the author's life, experiences, and insights. Individually, the essays I enjoyed the most were Nam Flashbacks, Psycho Magnet, Lucky O'Leary: A Prince Among Dogs, Push!, and What Color Is Your Aura.
My rating: 6.5/10
crossposted to rzezidizz, book_worm, & 50bookchallenge

Claxton Dong: Save Our Star

Save Our Star is a time-travel series, recommended from age 9, about equality between children and adults. I love it and have started a community for it. The official site, SaveOurStar.com, no longer seems to work, but archive.org has archived versions, such as this one, where you can read excerpts from the books, among other things.

The story begins in 2201, as a black hole is heading toward the sun, and scientists need to find a way to save our solar system. In order to speed up science, volunteers must go back in time—and because at the moment, only physically small people can use the new technology of time travel, the volunteers must be children. They are planning to go back to 2101, when children already have the same rights as in 2201…but somehow they end up in 2001 instead. It is one of the time travelers, twelve-year-old Luke, who narrates this first book of the series.

It is children’s lives that has changed the most by 2201, but—maybe partly due to technological progress—people of any age can get more freedom and independence than most adults today. An important reason for this is a system of dormitories: safe, cheap, and private rooms for people of all ages and sizes. “If the person using one has no other means of getting money, they can participate in an hour of labor at a labor exchange, which is enough to cover the cost. (If they're sick, they're monitored more closely and don't have to pay, of course.)” You can also eat at public cafeterias for half an hour of work a day. It seems that work to cover one’s basic needs is always easily available, and so relationships between employers and employees might be different from those today. ”We pay taxes to provide [dormitory living], but it's not like welfare in this time, because it's really for everyone and isn't looked down upon.”

This system of redistribution does not mean that less necessary goods are not relatively easily available, too; in fact, this is another area of equality between the generations. “I’d passed my driver’s license when I was eight and spent the next year working ten-hour days so I could buy this car.” Children are allowed, but not required to work; they can also get paid for going to school.

Schools are different from most of those today, but not as unconventional as, say, the Sudbury Valley School. They give grades, which even some conventional schools don’t give today, at least in the lower grades. “Any groups where more than 30% of the papers get A’s have to have their papers reevaluated by another group doing the same book somewhere else in the country. If the other group disagrees by a factor of more than 10%, the grades are changed. If the discrepancy is really big, sometimes fines are imposed. I’ve never been in a group that got evaluated—I don’t think it’s that common.” Students grade each other’s papers – something I, personally, wouldn’t like to do. School in 2201 reminds me of other kinds of jobs: maybe not everyone likes them, but they’re voluntary and paid.

Where babies are concerned, life is better by conventional standards, too: one of their parents can stay home with them for a few years. This future also means an improvement in animal welfare: meat is illegal in most places (perfect substitutes exist). Of course, it is no perfect utopia, even without considering the black hole. For example, “the harsh sunlight of our time” can imply an increase in the hole in the ozone layer, which might be part of a larger system of problems.

Although this book focuses on Luke, he also takes a look at the other time travelers before they set off.

"Next to me was a girl who couldn't have been more than eight years old. I was kind of surprised to see someone that young — it's hard to get much in the way of experience and knowledge to qualify you for a complex job at that age — most eight-year-olds I know are putting in time working at fast food joints or at school. I wondered why they'd accepted her into the TTC, but figured it was none of my business."

These last eight words show what ageism in 2201 is like: stereotypes about children may exist, but don’t lead to practical discrimination. As Luke gets to know two other time travelers, he wonders how the three of them have passed the interview—or if they are even “normal”—, but this doesn’t change the fact that they have. One of the three, a cynical, greedy, unpleasant child would be a sign of equality even if he weren’t allowed to go back: a sign that such traits are tolerated not only in adults.

After Luke arrives in the past, Dylan, a ten-year-old sci-fi fan, takes him in. It’s at Dylan’s house that Luke discovers when he is, and what this means: Dylan’s parents don’t let Luke stay, and he must try to lead an independent life in a time when this is illegal. At the restaurant where he’s found a job as a dishwasher, he befriends a waiter called José-Manuel, who invites him home, to a room he shares with three other men. Poverty is only one of their problems, which, however, don’t include inequality among themselves. “It was nice to be accepted by people in this time without my age coming into it. I kind of suspected that Pedro wasn’t as old as he was making out, either.” In the end, it is not José-Manuel or Pedro but Geraldo who becomes Luke’s closest friend in this group. Their friendship probably starts by Luke helping Geraldo; Geraldo later helps him by getting him a better job (as a busboy), and buying himself a mattress, so Luke can stay with them over the long term--ways one might help an adult as well.
All this is “just” the background to Luke’s actual mission, which involves him with a physicist named Leslie Smith and his fourteen-year-old son Lee. While often disagreeing with Leslie, Luke also appreciates his caring for his son, and accepts that Lee thinks better of him than Luke could imagine doing. This is the kind of gentle narrator Luke is, as tolerant as the society he comes from. This also means that as annoyed as he is by ageism, he doesn’t become deeply angry or sad.

crossposted to book_worm books, bookish, and booktards)

search to donate for youth rights

Hey you! Yeah, you... you know what ebay is, right? And you know
they have really stupid auctions sometimes? Well, I have a good place
for you to go. Why not join stupidebayitems ? Even worse is that guy who is selling 3 pounds of
stinky cheese (decorative packaging free if the bid gets over $250!)?

Yeah, we'll talk about all that here and more. You know you want to
join.
Opera Mini 2

I see that Opera Mini 2.0 is out now and it's looking very slick. Page Transition Animations, keyboard shortcuts (*1 to go to your first bookmark etc), custom searches on the home page and full screen mode (**).

Opera's definitely looking very slick and totally blows away the idea that Java's slow.

Point your Phone at http://mini.opera.com

crossposted to darac and opera_browser

Could someone please re-parent me?

My parents treated me mostly, but not completely as an equal, and have formed my personality somewhat. Could someone please give me the kind of help a non-ageist adult would give their child, and help me become who I want to become? Of course, because I want to be equal, I am also ready to help these people or others, in this way or in others. Many thanks in advance!

(crossposted to _youthrights, ageinaction, antiageism, fuck_ageism, kyriarchy, and teenageriots)

Dave had been a member there since February and was one of the higher-ranked participants. He was a regular in the chat and quite friendly. At this time, I was engaged to a guy from Missouri.
Dave and I didn't chat much although we did have a couple of close friends in common - TKEP is a bit clique-y :) While I was living in Missouri with the now-ex on a trial run for 6 months, Sept'03 to Feb'04, I mentioned in chat that I hadn't watched much anime. Dave being an anime geek and a completely generous person, offered to burn me a couple of cds with the best of his collection. He mailed them out to me and that was the start of our one-on-one conversations.
I broke up with Missouri-dude in April '04 because things just weren't working. I had a couple of flirtations with other people but mostly just wanted to relax from the relationship scene, since I just got out of this 3 year relationship. When I had the chance, I chatted with Dave, but it was hard to get ahold of him because his job was starting to suck his soul out.
In August Dave decided to quit his job and just be unemployed for a bit, live off his savings. First he went out to Australia to visit people there, and then he planned to roadtrip around to meet other people he knew from the site. This led to:

First time meeting face to face:
October '04. I was the first person he went to see on his roadtrip, because I was the only one in BC and everybody else was south or east of him. I gave him directions, told him when I had a couple of days off, and he showed up with different beers to have me taste (ew, beer) and his laptop filled with anime and movies to watch (yay movies!). I knew he was a cuddly kinda guy and I expected some hugs and backrubs. On what was supposed to be his last night there, he took the backrub in a slightly different direction >.> after I unexpectedly got laid, we talked all night until the sun came up, and he decided to extend his visit an additional day (to not be a jerk, he says :D). Over the next little while we found ourselves in a relationship :o and in love :o both things we weren't expecting. Happy bonuses! It's been almost 18 months now.

How often do you see each other:
Approximately once a month, more often if we're lucky. We've had quite a few extended visits of a week or more and only once have we gone two months without seeing each other.

Future plans:
I'm trying now to save up my moneyz so that I can take a 6 month leave of absence from work, and live with Dave for that time. Kind of a trial run. In the very-near future, I'm going to see him in a week and a half for my birthday/our year-and-a-half-iversary/a small get-together. Two of our friends from TKEP are coming out too.

Where you see both of you in 5 years:
If I'm still with him, we'll be married, no doubt. I'm not much for sitting around once a decision has actually been made. I think it's very likely that we'll end up married. He's still hesitant, but I think he's not giving himself enough credit. A bit of a long story that I can save for another time, hopefully with happy updates as we've got a serious talk planned for Wednesday/Thursday. I hope that we'll be living in Canada as I'm very close to my family, but we'll see about that part.

Pictures to share?
there aren't many of us together ;_; I'm going to try and get some in April.
here's a picture of us on our one-year anniversary, October 7th '05
Here and here are two pictures of us in August in Colorado, 9 of the TKEP people converged in Denver for a few days. Dave and I are in the back, on the far left. The other people there were fantastically awesome and these pictures were taken at Casa Bonita.

crossposted to agegap and distant_hearts

Positively Bi?

*click*

*click*

A man is served coffee by an attractive woman. *click* He is smiled at by a fellow customer in shoe shop, also an attractive woman. *click* In a montage of short segments, we see this man progress through the day and each time he sees an attractive woman (with whom, it is implied, he'd like to have sex with) he clicks a counter. By the end of the day, he checks his counter: 102. However, the lift operator has also been doing this and has a count of over 2000.

Thus goes the latest advert for Lynx and their latest fragrance "Click". But there is one pleasantly surprising twist in this advert. While the majority of the people he 'clicks' are young, attractive females (when he spots a bus full of soccer ladies, his clicker goes into overtime), there is one enounter that provides a rare protrayal of an apparently bisexual character.

The clicking man is just leaving a shop when he passes a young, attractive (yeah, it's an advert. They're all young and attractive) black male. They smile casually in the way that strangers do then, as the clicking man walks away we see him ponder this interaction. After a second, *click* the black man is added to the clicking man's list.

It seems to me that this is perhaps a more acceptable portrayal of Bi's than even Jack Harkness (Captain Jack of Doctor Who/Torchwood fame). Jack had perhaps a little too much of that "shag everything" mentality that the media like to imagine Gays and Bi's have. But this clicking man is, perhaps, a little more realistic.

Perhaps that's just in the vagueness of the portrayal, though. The clicking could be taken on face value; that the man is fantasising about the people he meets and counting the number of times he thinks about sex. Or it could be taken as a metaphor for his life and he does actualy bed 102 people.

In the former case, he is shown to be a normal, red-blooded male who isn't averse to the occasional deviation, if the other guy is attractive. It's that 'true' spirit of bisexuality, that the black man's attractiveness meant more than his gender.

Perhaps the media is slowly waking up to Bi's. Positive portrayals are appearing but, if the image of gays is anything to go by, it may be many years (if ever) before we shake off the association that alternative sexualities = raving nymphomaniacs.

crossposted to bi_pride and darac

80's items up for grabs!

Hey all! I'm a My Little Pony collector by defualt. Recently I came across a lot of Ponies and many accessories in a carrying case at a flea market. Not all the accessories are MLP, so I thought I'd offer them to the various 80's comms. No money needed, I just wanna get rid of the items.

http://photobucket.com/albums/v16/Dragonessa/

The first two rows and the first picture of the thrid row. Now the doll head is from a Xuxa head, which isn't 80's and I've had for ages. If you want it, it's also free of charge. My boyfriend is not for sale. Neither are the items he's holding (the first Pony he bought me and the Pride and Joy of his Star Wars collection). Only the pictures I specified.

Some items I HAVE identified. I knopw some are Strawberry Shortcake items (a Blueberry Muffin shoe with hole for display stand, Ballerina Strawberry's tiara, and the SS comb), and one Moondreamer's costume. There's an elastic band with the Sweet Secret's logo on it, and the yellow heart with blue cup thingy I've identified as MLP and is not for sale now.

Strawberry SHortcake items are taken!

how can I advertise anti-ageism?

Now that the number of our userpics has doubled, I'd like to use some of mine to advertise causes. Could anyone please suggest how to advertise anti-ageism in a userpic? Thanks in advance!

(crossposted to _youthrights, ageinaction, antiageism and teenageriots)

Penda the Pagan
Royal sacrifice and a Mercian king
Alby Stone

Penda, a seventh-century king of Mercia, was a noted regicide. Indeed, his other achievements - his military campaigns and a crafty and unlikely alliance with the British king Cadwallon were instrumental in carving out Mercia as an independent kingdom and establishing it as a power to be reckoned with - were almost completely overshadowed by his reputation as a slayer of kings. As Penda was a pagan, and his alleged victims all Christian, it comes as no surprise to find that medieval chroniclers, mostly monks or Christian nobles, viewed his reign and deeds with horror and denigrated him at every opportunity.

Read the rest, and find loads more like it.

crossposted from my LJ to: livejournal_uk, mercians, midlanders & uk_pagans.

Love

It's strange stuff innit. Never know where it's going to pop up and appear next, and ~98% of the time, it's completely and utterly unexpected too. It's a driving force though, and can lead us to doing all sorts of weird-arse crazy whacky wonderful shit. Of course, it also leads to some of Life™'s greatest disaters too, but what the heck, it's all part of the fun anyway.

When I love, I'm loving 'cause I can't not love. The object of my affections may or may not be aware of the fact that they are being loved, but their knowledge of its existence has no effect on its existence. Said knowledge can alter the intensity however, in that reciprocated feelings and emotions, and glances out the corner of the eye, and brushes past, and um... yeah, reciprocation is a Good Thing™. Why? Because loving is Good, and it's healthy, and yeah, it's fun stuff too.

And I should drag myself off to bed and leave my God to do his own promotional work, since he too is all about the love. 'S a good job I love him then really, innit. :)

crossposted from my LJ to lokeans

Interesting new research

Ok, so I know it's hardly proven or anything, and I'm not going to suggest anyone goes out and feeds MDMA to their kids but... pretend for a moment that the research has been carried out as far as it'll go and it's been found that actually yes, it's true, taking MDMA during adolescence will reduce your kid's liability to be damaged by MDMA in the future (should they choose to take it in the future)... would you do it? If it had been proven to reduce the risk of problems in the future, would you give your kid(s) MDMA during their adolescence?

crossposted from my own account to booju_mooju

Why is it that when some of us fall out with people/hate them in a big way, we have the tendency to go and trawl their LJs every so often just so we can sit there muttering and grumbling and slagging them off?

crossposted to blog_sociology and my own LJ.

click-to-donate sites and Care2

At click-to-donate sites, clicking a button will take you to a page of ads, and the advertisers will then donate a little money to charity. Usually, only one click per day per computer is counted. During October (breast cancer awareness month), every click at The Breast Cancer Site is tripled.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure if all such sites are for real, but this page has some old info.

Care2 has its own click-to-donate portal, and several discussion forums about this way of helping. Here is a way to reach many pages with one click. In general, Care2Connect is somewhat like LJ, just particularly for activists: "the global network of organizations and people who Care2 make a difference." Just surfing Care2 or using their email contributes money to causes.

(crossposted to _take__action_, a_better_world, advocates, makeadifference, and teenageriots)
