Personality:

There are surprising facets to Francis that get overlooked thanks to the nature of the Nations. He is so much more than a promiscuous playboy looking for the next cheap thrill.

Due to his reputation he has a difficult time being taken seriously. Jabs against him are easily thrown which leaves him frustrated and understandably needy for attention and positive attention at that. He harbors a need for reassurance that goes unspoken due to his pride. He has a series of accomplishments and hardships up to his ears, all of which he believes he has gracefully triumphed over. He does not have the military might other younger nations brag about but he has longevity and has gone through things he honestly does not believe his juniors possible of. His strength is quiet and he shows a great deal of patience overall.

He has no patience for certain people calling him a ‘cheese eating surrender monkey’ which goes against Francis’ penchant for enjoying a nice verbal spat. He’s used to the insults and has a strange way of letting them appear to roll off his back. An unyielding cheer, if you will. Like the insults, he is good at diverting his own personal responsibilities in the mistakes he makes.

Francis does not boast perfection, though he surrounds himself with high-class things. He knows what he wants, who he wants, and the means to get it. This leads him to be labeled as superficial and gaudy. Quite the contrary; he is happiest in the countryside with fresh air and a relaxed atmosphere though company is always necessary. An old man like him can get lost in his thoughts if left in solitude for too long.

Generally Francis is a kind man. He’s especially generous when his way is being had. He likes to think of himself as an older brother, a mentor of sorts, to his neighbors due to his age (but for the love of God, don’t call him old. It’s a double-edged sword with him). He has a strange sense of paternal affection for some and amorous flirtation with others. Francis isn’t the kind of man that will let stipulations get in the way of him expressing his emotions toward his extensive ‘family’.

Francis thinks that there are many boast-worthy aspects to his glorious person—others stubbornly deny these good qualities.

Frankly speaking, he is overconfident, smug, and very forward. Many think of him as self-absorbed though he’s not. Well, not completely. Francis is charming and enjoys making other people happy—and sometimes their happiness may reflect on his capabilities which only help out that inflated ego of his. No matter how irritating he can be with his laissez-faire attitude, people find themselves wanting to be around him. If you can get past the groping you’ll have a good friend. Dramatic, but good. If you can’t get past the groping, well… He’ll keep trying until you do, and enjoy the process of desensitizing.

At the end of the day, Francis is coping with being a very old man in the only ways he knows how to. He is his worst critic, can be deeply self-deprecating, and understands the power of a good lament. People come to him, and in a way love him, but he is not the Empire he used to be. He deals with the memories of past Glory Days like many of his European neighbors; finding himself both loving and hating his apparent immortality.

Who hasn’t thought of what it would be like to be truly human among their kind?

Death does not come easy to Monsieur Bonnefoy, the stubborn old goat. As a personified nation, he, like others of his kind, do not parish. Not permanently at least. In the past Francis has died, but as the attack was superficial (ie: His people and land were not wiped out of existence, thus he continues to exist) and his body repaired itself. He is virtually immortal and has aged very slowly.

He is stronger than he looks though he does not impose his strength on others. As said in regards to personality, he is calmer than he used to be.

A self-confident smirk lit up the features on the Frenchman’s face as he peered into the room at the sleeping figure whose legs were thrown over the couch’s arms carelessly. So innocent. So…unsuspecting. With that in mind, Francis made his way quietly into the room, eyes trained on the unmoving figure. He stood quietly before the prone man, smiling when he saw those comically thick eyebrows furrow in his sleep.

Lovely...

After a moment or two spent troubled in thought, Francis turned his back on the slumbering man before promptly sitting down. The Brit let out a pained sound – half gurgle, half irate sailor – as the Parisian on top of him shifted on his new seat.

“Angleterre. Bonjour” he greeted cheerfully from his perch. Seeing that his seat’s face was turning an unhealthy shade of purple he shifted just slightly before flashing the flustered man a winning smile. “You look well!”

Ignoring the lively tone, it was more grating than anything else, Arthur freed an arm and shoved hard. The Frenchman didn’t go down without a fight, squawking indignantly as he met the floor. He flicked a bit of dark blond hair from his face to give his petulant acquaintance a look.

Arthur gave a huff and grimaced. “And you look like a fool on his arse you oaf.”

Francis smiled as he stood. “Pleasant as always. I would think you would appreciate a wake up call for the meeting. My mistake” he drawled just so, eying the man still seated. A flash of recognition went across his face.

He could only curse lowly under his breath as the flamboyant blond sauntered from the room, humming some God-awful French song, smile apparent even without the visual.

His tolerance is phenomenal. I’m fairly sure if you cut him he would bleed wine.
He is utterly technophobic, which of course, means he has nice electronics that annoy the shit out of him. An iPod, a Kindle, and a smart phone are the tip of the toys that cause him nothing but a headache.
The reason he keeps candles around his house is to dull out the smell of smoke.
…Francis smokes. A fair amount.
But he’s proud of his looks, so he takes very good care not to look (or smell) like he’s a borderline chain smoker.
That means he bleaches his teeth… every three months.
He also drinks at least two large cups of café per day.
Francis tends to be one of those guys that just …drops on in, uninvited at times. He’ll bring little gifts (As if gracing you with his presence isn’t quite enough!) to make up for it, but yes. He does it.
Speaking of dropping in. Arthur’s closet is approximately a quarter French-occupied. In other words, Francis tends to come visit him more often.
…which is why Francis is so damned quick to duck out of the way of thrown objects.
Francis has slept with many, many people. Nations, humans…
He did not sleep with Joan. He is nostalgic now, but she was a means in a desperate time. It was probably a one-sided love on her part.
A few times he has been put on trial for being a witch and hanged accordingly. The townsfolk were a little surprised when he stood after a few minutes of being dropped from the gallows like a sack of bricks. Okay, so Fran took some sadistic glee in that.
Despite the glee of reawakening to public outcry, he’s otherwise terrified about physical death. He knows that he will come back, of course… but there’s always the fear that this time will be it. Not to mention, it’s painful.
Francis has died dozens of times in his abnormally long life. Many times to Arthur. The favor has been returned.
He is a brilliant swordsman, even to this day. Not a bad shot, either.
The Revolutionary War aid was done to piss. Arthur. Off.
Though, Francis fancies himself a philosopher so he did admire America’s naïve desire for freedom and the like. He was always somewhat fond of the boy (since he tried to get him to be his colony at first). So what if he took that fondness a step further by taking his innocence after the war was won?
Francis is a bit contradictory in that he is very self-involved but he’s paternal.
He was responsible for watching over his royalty’s children.
Francis was originally one of three brothers that represented Western (himself), Middle, and Eastern Francia. His brothers perished while he remained. Not like that wasn’t traumatic for a child, no…
He owns several homes: a rather nice townhouse in Paris, an old mansion in Nice, and a smaller home in Burgundy.
Stress bakes. An obscene amount.
Scars. There are a lot of them. Everywhere.
He has a chauffer to drive him around town. It isn’t his fault that the traffic in Paris is extremely stressful.
If he’s outside of Paris he will drive himself.
Francis owns a BMW. In red.

He wears reading glasses when doing his copious amounts of paperwork
Francis knows how to play the harp, piano, and cello.
His handwriting has not changed in over two hundred years.
The man has a light tan. He is not alabaster. He does not sparkle, though he would if he could and put Edward Cullen to shame.

Doesn’t stay up late, usually turning in around 11. Only two reasons exist for making it past midnight and those are work (more like a CRISIS at work) or play.

He doesn’t think that British food is horrible, just hearty. It’s Arthur’s in particular that is lacking. Will not admit the first.
Canada’s accent = OH DEAR GOD.
He blames Arthur’s influence on Mathieu’s poutine. So hard.
Hair. He has a lot of it, including on his toes… but he shaves that off. The rest is fine to stay.
Francis prefers women that have curves but he’s equal opportunity.
Likes to people watch.
Still feels paternal toward Seychelles in particular. Mathieu, also. Downplays it a lot.
His hair gets to the point of teasing dirty blond in the winter months. Bleaches back out in the sun.
The only tech “savvy” game (Not chess, cards, or otherwise lacking of electricity) he actually enjoys playing is Angry Birds. Mindless destruction does it for him…
He sings when he’s cooking, or in the car…showers, too.
Can sing. Tenor.
Cringes when America tries to speak his language, especially when he discovered that the word for “Shower” in French is “douche”. Not amused!
Is still bitter about that whole Vichy situation…
Gardens
Has worn a corset before… on a dare. Not in the Victorian era like you might think.
Corset piercings are fascinating to him. He’s wanted to get one done but he’s already got enough scar tissue that it would be an awkward process.
He does not have a tattoo. Not a one.
Ears were pierced in the past. He didn’t upkeep the fashion.
Wears boxer-briefs.
…when he does bother wearing underwear.
Speaks fluent Russian from the days when he was tutoring a younger Russia.
Still has a soft spot for the man, even though he’s not the gangly teenager he used to be.
His favorite color is plum. It’s just a royal color, and Francis has high tastes.

Can’t stand McDonalds, but he does like a nice gourmet burger from time to time.

Even though they fight, Francis would not know what to do if he didn’t have Arthur to fight with. It’s a love/hate relationship. Stupid old married couple.
Watercolors
Hates modern art with a passion. Of course there are museums in his country dedicated to it but …ew.
Can rant. For hours. (Canada got it from somewhere)
The majority of his bedmates do not see him right when they wake up. They usually come downstairs to see him as poised as he was when laying down with him, making a breakfast. Thoughtful, right?
…that’s because he has the worst bed-head. Ever. It takes a lot of familiarity before he’ll let anyone know this though, let alone see it.
Scotland has seen (without necessarily having caused it).
Has a little black book that is very organized. Down to the tabs and color coding.
Thinks that “twitter” is new slang for dirty things. …Close enough.
Visits Scotland fairly often to smoke, drink, and bitch.
While he likes black suits, he tends to wear navy or gray.
Wears his hair pulled back while doing chores.
He enjoys horseback riding though he’s not done it in over a decade. Time flies.
He is a very hands-on. Tactile.
Francis has owned silk sheets in the past and enjoyed them greatly. Until he made the connection between that and a love motel and just, no. Egyptian cotton with a high thread count now. In dark colors.
Francis makes it mandatory to have at least one fireplace in his homes. He finds them comforting.
…Outside of all of those hellfire implications. Usually bypasses them unless he’s particularly somber. Yeah, he’s still concerned about Hell.
Takes 30 minutes minimum to get ready, and that’s not counting the 15-20 minute shower he takes.
Patient, for the most part.
Writes erotic literature when on vacation, without fail.
Has a rather deprecating sense of humor when he’s miffed.
He cannot stand it being completely silent. It’s part of the reason while he sings if there’s nothing playing in the background.
Tends to enjoy giving massages. With clothes on or off.
For as theatric and dramatic he is, he is a very private mourner when it hits hard. Not a messy crier.
Likens himself to a cat; he’s very graceful, prissy, and likes naps.
Looks at Monaco as a little sister. Who he has not tried to molest.
Can be very scathing and brutally honest when having an all-out fight.
…likes Arthur’s ‘punk’ hair. And petting it, though he nearly pulls back a broken wrist whenever he tries it.
Did a lot of opium back in the day. He keeps his recreational drugs on a low presently.
Still thinks that the Eiffel Tower is fairly unattractive, but knows that it is iconic and can at least appreciate that…
