Amber: Part of the hardest ... heh. *shakes her head, sighs* Realizing how little control you have over anything is... one of the most terrifying things in life. Dealing with that, accepting it? One of the hardest.

The entire company was getting turned upside down, and Flynn was having a ball with it. He was pacing around his office, a conference call to four different heads of departments wrapping up, his hair all over the place with the twirling he had been doing while trying to talk them into what he wanted them to do, and by God, they were starting to get it. One of them actually chuckled before hanging up, and Flynn was smirking when he called "come in!" at the knock on the door.

The familiarity of the two figures which filed into his office almost took his breath away; good thing Alan had discovered the best way to get in a word edgewise into Flynn's occasional babbling, which was to start first.

"Flynn! Here, I have another of Walter's boy miracles for you. This is Roy Kleinberg, class of '77, who was working same level as me before you started upturning the place. Cubicle next to me, actually. Brilliant in math, accounting--"

"-- and actuaries."

The curly head perked up, eyebrows climbing up over the glasses. "You've heard about me? I did that actuary program which made a hit a couple of years back..."

"Kind of." Flynn had to make an effort to keep his face from grimacing as he recalled this very same look of excited, trusting respect before it faded for the last time. Not here, not now. "I'm afraid that program was among the casualties that the MCP took on its way down."

That got him a confused look, yeah, he knew it sounded weird when he was talking about programs as of people, and a shrug. "It was good work. I might be able to reconstruct it or most of it from my notes."

"Yeah." Change of topic. "Right! Did you get the news we're doing away with the cubicles?"

"What?" But how..."

"Well, that's what we are, right? Engineers. There has to be a way to get us all to work properly without putting everybody in little boxes. Kind of like cells, and nobody likes to be reminded of that while working. Right, man?"

Alan gave a lopsided smile. "You're taking on too much, too fast, Flynn."

"Yeah, well, if we don't start running now, we'll keep on hobbling. Right. Have you two had lunch?"

Both Roy and Alan shook their heads, Alan with a bemused expression at the change of topics, probably, and Roy with that little grin that his program had taken on so often.

"Good." Moving between them, he swung an arm around Kleinberg's shoulders. "Come on then, Ram. Tron."

"--stop calling me that!"

"Let's go see if the new pizza place down the street has got something for us. And no way, Bradley. That was quite a stint your program pulled, I swear."

"How do you know my program's name was Ram?"

"I got to... uh, deal with some of the MCP mess, before it was too late. You eat pizza, right?"

"Well, yeah..."

'verses/disambiguation

Okay, since a few 'verses spawned by RP over the time since I started Flynn (and Quorra, and the rest), Imma putting this up as reference so that when 'verse names are used, people who play with aren't (much) confused.

If your character is listed somewhere here but you'd rather s/he was in another 'verse, let us know?

This is generally the default 'verse, unless otherwise specified. After the reintegration, Sam and Quorra return to the User world. Quorra starts working as Sam's PA under the name of Cora Cray. They tell the story to Alan, as Sam... can use a touchstone, ahem.
Unbeknownst to them, Flynn gets spat out of the Portal on a street near the Arcade, with no memory who he is and how he got there. He's taken in to a hospital and eventually remembers, showing up at Alan's apartment to the general surprise. Flynn does not return to the public eye, let alone as Encom CEO, choosing a private life with his family.
Unbeknownst to ANYONE, the isomorphic virus didn't destroy all the ISOs in the Sea of simulation. Some very few survived, mutated, so to speak (because that is how life adapts to a virus), and even fewer appeared yet, over the cycles. One of them recognized Tron after he fell into the Sea, and with the help of her people, Xia managed to stabilize him until Alan found them and fixed Tron to normal, even slightly expanded, functionality. Tron and Xia are... sort of bonded, thanks to shared code/substance that she used to patch him when he was the most unstable at the beginning.
Later, slowly and rather painfully, Clu pulled himself together inside the Grid. After long conversation, mostly but not exclusively with Flynn and Tron (also with Alan, and Sam, and Quorra, and Xia), he submitted to modifications suggested by Flynn and executed by Flynn and Sam. Changing Clu's directive from create the perfect system to improve the system you are in, as more flexible, adding self-monitoring capabilities similar to Tron's, and, again with Clu's permission, clearing the many-hundreds-of-cycles accumulation of hatred for the ISOs, giving him a blank slate about them. Which latter has made communication with Xia and Quorra rather easier. All of them have made Clu's life easier.
Later ~~because we didn't think of it sooner~~, Sam brought Roy inside the Grid, and there let Flynn tell him the entire story, bringing the entire surviving old guard up to speed.
Which leaves Amber, who is a friend. Once, a very, very long time ago (before the first movie), she and Flynn had a very brief fling, and after that were never again in contact. She lives in NYC, has two sons, is (comparatively) recently widowed with two grown sons, and works in the music industry, talent search and development. Among the people Flynn interacts with personally, she's one of the few who doesn't know about the Grid.

In the outer world, Quorra made friends with Jet. Because she does that.
And with Roy. Drawing him out of his shell in ways nobody expected. Whatever happened between them, eventually he let her go. Because ... of many things, especially with how special she and Sam are for each other. Eventually, Nicky ended up working in the coffee shop that Roy frequents, and that story is heading in a good direction.
Inside the Grid... Tron showed up. And Flynn was at the console, and he rounded up Alan and they went inside and fixed him. Later, when Flynn was ready with an ID disc for him, Clu appeared, in very poor shape, and they ended up working on him.
With Roy on board, eventually Ram was recompiled and joined the gang, in and out of the Grid.

How exactly it happened remains to be written, but a page was sent from inside the Grid not twenty USER years after Flynn disappeared, but only twenty Grid cycles later. Alan and Lora went to investigate, found the laser, and Flynn and Quorra popped back into the real world. (Without reintegration! The mess on the Grid remains to be sorted out.) Sam got his Dad back still as a kid, Flynn returned as CEO of ENCOM, and many shenanigans ensued.

Grid_lined
... everyone and anyone over there.
Most important difference is that Flynn was spat, after the reintegration, back inside the Grid. With no memory of who he is, no disc, and very little familiar to orient himself by, in the Outlands.
Eventually, he made his way back to awareness, and then back to the City.

Because the other day was really a bad day, and then reading fics made his mind careen into angst. Alan is legacyguardian

in... a way now Flynn's sort of wondering WHY THE HELL did they let him have the run of things at all

Alan: Because for all the irritation, for all the ... *shakes his head, goes stands with his friend*

Flynn: *slightly tired - at himself - smile, and nods. Kind of knows. And still, the mistakes he made...*

Alan: *wry smile, clasps an arm around his shoulders*

Flynn: *tucks his chin in, but leans into him*

Alan: *both arms around him then, if he's going to look like that*

Flynn: *sighs, then looks around to make sure none of the kids are nearby. And then quietly* You ... knew... I wasn't trustworthy. I should have listened.

Alan: *quietly, reasonably* If I know you're not trustworthy, I shouldn't trust your self-evaluation that you're not trustworthy.

Flynn: *blink, blink blinks. deeply stifled brief laugh, mostly just shaking in his chest* Nice logic, except it's realizing now how untrustworthy I always was. I didn't, back then.

Alan: *chuckles* I rather liked it. *kisses his temple, hugs him* It's not that you're not trustworthy. It's that you get carried away. And I knew. And I should have pushed. And you should have listened. We all should have done things we didn't. Or not done some things we did. *a little deeper, a little more gravel* We're here now.

Flynn: *hunches into him. Muffled into Alan's shoulder* I don't... deserve. All I've earned has been pain and suffering and missing and loss. I can't fix it, Alan. No undo button, no taking it back to where I made the choices. Just... *shakes his head, this isn't taking them anywhere better, either, and he knows that it's not Alan's fault, it's not anyone's fault but his own, in the end. Who did he think he was, playing with lives and creation and new worlds?*

Alan: *quietly still, still gently, fingers combing through his hair* And who decides that, Flynn? You? Who decides what you deserve? Or are you manifesting your ego again? *and that's also gentle, teasing, almost laughter in his voice but sadness too, that his friend feels that way * If we, if Sam does'nt get to decide what you deserve, we all have the choice of what we give. And we're making that choice. Every day.

Flynn: *kind of freezes at that, gentle as it was, swallows. Small nod, that and breathing almost the only motions in him right now*

Alan: *still smoothing back his hair* You made your choices to wander off and ... and be the genius in the wilderness, or build the biggest surprise present ever. Sam told me you wanted to show him, soon, whatever 'soon' was. We're making the decision not to let you go off again a second time. We want, we need you around too much. We all love you too much for that.

Flynn: *shaky breath* I meant to give... everything to everybody. And I ended up taking, taking, from everybody and everything I touched. I don't know what... I don't know how to make it up, old friend. Everything I took... it's huge. And every time I try to... to let something loose, it weighs even more, because I shouldn't have taken it in the first place. *swallows* I'm not going anywhere, no. I'm... not. I'm just afraid in the end, it'll turn out even worse, somehow.

Alan: *hugs him tighter* You... *kind of starts to say you let us worry abotu that, but, no* no, you go right on feeling that, but don't you dare let it paralyze you. We're all working on it together, now. However it turns out... is how it turns out. No one's trying to make it any worse than it absolutely has to be, and... doesn't seem like that's bad at all. We'll figure it out. Together. All of us.

Flynn: *small nod, eyes closed. And then another shaky breath, arms tightening back around Alan. Voice all raspy* I'll try that, yeah.

Alan: *quietly, again, because it bears repeating* We love you, Kevin. I love you. We're not letting you go this time. *no matter how much you think you may deserve it*

Flynn: *and that takes his breath away. Again. Differently. And there's almost a smile, and he relaxes a little.* Thank you, Alan. And ... difficult as my actions may make it to believe... I love you, too. I do.

Alan: *soft smile* I know. I do know that. *he always knew. even when he wanted to grab Flynn by his disappeared shoulders and shake him till his teeth rattled*

Flynn: *slow sigh, as the tension leaves his body somewhat. It's... that matters. Possibly more than he can put into words*

A/N: This log is with legacyguardian's mun's Tron, who currently doesn't have a journal. Slightly meta, triggered by rewatching the original movie and the derezzing of Ram. Precedes this and this.

... every time I watch the Flynn-assembles-the-recognizer sequence? He's feeling guilty that he was all EEEE about that, instead of paying attention at how badly off Ram was

Flynn: *sad Flynn is sad and guilty*

Tron: *one hand light on his shoulder, quiet*

Flynn: *grateful, just...* I know what's important to me, and yet ... every time, I spend so much energy on things that can wait and not enough on... what matters.

Tron: *just... rubs his shoulder, rubs a hand over his back, listening. not going to argue that right now, but he's here. he's not going anywhere*

Flynn: *in a bit, reaches a hand back to Tron's shoulder, because... because*

Tron: *gently pulls him into his arms*

Flynn: *dammit, he shouldn't feel like a kid in need of comfort... but just for a little bit, he does, hugging back tightly*

Tron: *that's just fine, that's what he's there for, so he hugs him, holds him, still sort of rubbing his back and cuddling him close*

Flynn: *sighs, relaxing slightly into the hug, settling a little. Muffled* Sometimes, I just feel so damned stupid for what I should've seen and done.

Tron: *combs fingers through his hair a bit. everyone feels that way sometimes. non-committal noise of affection, commiseration*

Flynn: *shaky breath out. That... has quite the effect, actually, and he closes his eyes, squeezing them a little for a moment, before just snuggling in*

Tron: *there, much better. in a way. snuggling him close, tight, a thousand cycles plus of protecting giving him quite the I'll-take-care-of-you aura, holding him close*

Flynn: *and even with nearly as long of being the exiled one in charge... that still very much works on him. Especially with how much he does trust Tron* Thanks, my friend.

Tron: *smiling, it's audible in his voice, warm and steady* Any time you need.

Flynn: *smiles a bit, too* I know... you were always there for me when I called... and lots of time when I didn't. *and then the other pang comes back. Of how he repaid Tron, during all those many cycles... but he swallows that one. One upset at a time.*

Tron: Of course. *it's just who he is. and even if he doesn't know what caused it he can feel the slight shift of tension in his friend's body, hugs him tightly again, for a second * It's what I do, remember? *faint smile, deliberately light tone*

Flynn: *and what do I do?* Mm-hmm. And you do do it well. *eyes closed still, and hugging a little tighter. He can too protect his friends, dammit, he'll find a way yet. Crappy track record notwithstanding*

Tron: *quiet, husky* You're worth it. *yes, he does mean that. all of it. strong and steady and holding on tight*

Flynn: *slightly starts at that, but then actually relaxes better, after* And so're you, old friend. I'll just... have to keep that up.

Tron: *soft snort, chuckling. he has no doubts that Flynn can keep up. maybe not as much, as fast or as hard as they used to, but they all go a little slower these days, whether from age or caution.*

Flynn: *and grins at that sound, oh, it's good to hear.* Mm-hmm.

Tron: *there, now. that's much better *
