O.R.I.O.N.’S QUEST: Chapter One, Part Three

Rahil spoke without looking up, “Everything checks out. Dr. Hunter’s ship should be docking in approximately seven minutes.” She looked up, giving Carmella a worried look. “The last transmission I got said he wanted to start initiation sequence for O.R.I.O.N. as soon as his ship is within five minutes of docking.”

Carmella seemed completely unruffled. “So, what’s the problem?”

Rahil’s dark eyes glistened. “I’d feel more comfortable if he was on board the station when we turned the machine one. In case any problems occurred during initiation.”

Carmella gave back a good-natured smile. “Ultimately, Hunter is the boss. It’s his project, his baby, right?”

Rahil seemed doubtful. “Yes…”

Carmella allowed a tiny frown to form between her perfect brow. “Don’t you feel confident, Mikush?”

Rahil shifted uncomfortably in her chair. “Like you said, it’s Dr. Hunter’s baby. But, this is a machine that he knows best. And what we are about to do, is something no one has attempted before.”

Carmella’s gaze swept toward the flashing blip on the scope. Her expression seemed unreadable, at least to Andre. “Whatever happens, we will handle it as a team. No one here is going it alone, Mikush, don’t forget that.” She turned to give Rahil a stern matronly look. “I believe you worry too much, Rahil.  You’ll get an ulcer that way. Besides, it just entails flipping a switch, on your part, am I right?”

Forcing a smile, Rahil gave Carmella a quick nod of her head. “You’re right. It’s just that easy.” But as Rahil turned back to face the scope, Andre saw the worried expression flood her face once again.

Carmella smiled reassuringly as she waved her hand. “Well, carry on. I’ll be in my office if you need me.” Then she  gave Rahil a searching look before reiterating. “Or would you rather I stayed?”

Rahil seemed to force confidence as she turned a bright smile toward Carmella. “Andre is returning any minute now. He’s in engineering, checking on the microprocessor.”

At the mention of his name, Andre felt a flutter in his stomach that made him smile. Carmella gave Rahil a crisp nod of authority, but stood for a moment longer as if to study the younger woman’s face. “I see…  well, keep up the good work.”

Rahil chirped back, “Yes, Ma’am.”

Carmella turned and locked gazes with Andre who had yet to leave the doorway. From startled to a welcoming smile, Carmella’s face changed in a millisecond. “Good your back, Tourve. How was it with the processor?”

He answered while sliding past her into the control room. “Everything checks out.”  For a second longer, he could feel the woman’s eyes on him as she paused in the corridor and then she turned and disappeared around a corner.

Andre walked up behind Rahil who leaned into her work. A frown of concentration furrowed her brow as she seemed to give her full attention to the radar scope. Dr. Hunter’s ship was still the only blip on the screen.

O.R.I.O.N.’S QUEST: Chapter One, Part Two

Rahil Mikush pressed the microphone looped over one ear and hanging near her mouth and said, “Smitty, I have visual.”

A man’s voice squawked over the communication system, “That’s a Roger.”

By this time, Andre had slipped his headpiece over his ear and spoke into the tiny a microphone, “What’s up Smitty?”

Smitty snickered, “We are… I hope.”

Andre smiled at the joke. “It’s just a figment of your imagination.  You’re really still in the simulator at flight school dreaming that you have become some big shot.”

Smitty asked, “Why aren’t you flying one of these ships, Andre?”

Andre laughed sarcastically, “Don’t you know, I’m afraid of heights?”

Smitty answered, “Right. So you take a job aboard an orbiting weather station? That makes perfect sense.”

Andre said,  “If I don’t look out the windows, I can pretend I’m still on Earth.”

Another man’s voice squawked through Andre’s earpiece, “How’s the computer holding up, Andre?”

Andre gave a pat snide remark, “After I pasted her together this morning, she’s holding her own, Hunter.”

Hunter bantered back, “What would we do without your cutting wit, Andre…  Let me speak to Rahil.”

Andre sat back and watched Rahil from the corner of his eye, his arms crossed against his chest as she spoke into her mouthpiece, “Yes, Dr. Hunter?”

Hunter said, “So what is it like to be this close to the stars you love?”

Rahil got a dreamy look in her eyes. “It’s…”

Hunter answered, “Heaven?”

Rahil smiled. “Yes, that is exactly the word.”

Hunter changed the subject. “Dr. Taylor can hardly wait to be up there with the crew.”

Andre thought, Rahil looked good in control. He wanted to kiss the dimple that formed near her mouth when she answered, “I can imagine.  The telescope he built at O.R.I.O.N. Station keeps calling my name.  Soon as we’re done here, I’m going stargazing, right up close and personal.” She unkeyed the microphone and gave Andre a nervous smile.

Andre winked at her while running his finger across her shoulders, he whispered in her ear, “I need to check on the mother lode.”

He turned and walked toward the exit, but he heard her call from behind him. “I still think that’s a strange name to call the microprocessor.”

Andre stopped at the door.  Feeling very sure of himself, he gave Rahil another wink. “She loves it… and me.”

He turned to leave, but stopped to peak over his shoulder to see Rahil smile secretly to herself. She’s forgotten all about that blip, he smiled and rounded the corner, as if the leave. He stopped when Dr. Carmella Beaumont, an imposing woman in her early forties, walked by.

She gave him a crisp nod accompanied with a terse, “‘Morning, Tourve.” Her gaze then pivoted around the room and seemed to take in everything, resting on Rahil.

“How’s it going Mikush?”

Again, Rahil sat as if completely absorbed with the blip on the scope. “Good morning, Carmella. Everything is on schedule.”

Carmella gave Rahil a crisp nod of authority as the controller queried a read out that scrolled on a nearby monitor.

Here is a science fiction story I wrote several years ago. As a screenplay, it won an award at a Beaumont, Texas writer’s contest. Hope you like it!

Aboard the Space Station O.R.I.O.N., Andre Tourve pulled to a sitting position in the narrow bunk that served as his bed. It was time to get up, but he felt drained and sluggish. He hadn’t slept well since boarding the floating weather station. The bed was too small and breathing in the artificial atmosphere gave him a constant headache just above his right eye.

He shook his head wondering how he had ever agreed to leave N.A.S.A. and come aboard this bucket? He already missed lounging on New Smyrna Beach while gazing at the blue, blue of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida.

Andre wandered toward a small niche,  he could barely squeeze into, that served as a lavatory consisting of a sink, a toilet and a shower with a minute area of small space to hold it all together. He examined his face in the wedge of glass-covered aluminum that someone thought to call a mirror. Noting the dark circles under his bloodshot blue eyes and the disheveled state of his dark hair, he racked his fingers through to smooth the spiked ends into submission. Then he dunked his face into the sink filled with tepid water. A few minutes later, dressed and ready for duty, he strode into the narrow corridor.

A few minutes later, carrying two cups of coffee and two bagels with cream cheese packets, Andre ducked into the control tower where a giant supercomputer occupied half the room. At the bottom of a wall-sized monitor were the embossed initials O.R.I.O.N..

The only other person in the room was a petite brunette who sat in front of a keyboard and scope.  A microphone headset looped around one ear. Her fingers flew as she typed.

Andre stopped behind Rahil. For a moment, he stood gazing over her shoulder.

She gave no indication that she noticed him until he set one of the bagels with cream cheese and a coffee on the console beside her.  Glancing up, she gave him a quick smile.

Still, Andre spoke first, “I thought you could use this.”

Rahil’s gaze shot toward an empty mug shoved to the side. She spoke with a clipped, Russian accent to his American one. “I already had coffee, Andre, but thank you for thinking of me.” She gave him a shy smile.

He slid snugly into the chair beside her. “What about breakfast?”

One corner of her lips turned up in a wry grin. “There is no time, dorogoi. Today we launch the Orbital Network.” She turned to give him a teasing smile. “I know you know that, Andre.”

A sarcastic laugh burst from his throat. “Yeah, today we get to act like gods.”

Her quizzical brown eyes switched to an expression of childlike joy. “It is so exciting, do you not think so, Andre?”

He shrugged in mock indifference and answered with barely concealed sarcasm.  “How can it be anything other than glorious.”

Andre leaned toward the console fiddling with a wire that hung loose beneath. “Hey, who’s the hack that put this thing together?”

Rahil giggled and gave his shoulder a nudge. I believe the hack is you, Master Electrician Tourve.”

Andre grinned smugly. “I believe you’re right.”

He rested his hand on the console near Rahil’s.  Their fingers barely touched.

For a moment, he allowed himself to gaze into her eyes as he ran his finger down the side of hers. The soft brown of her eyes seemed to melt in his direction. He knew his eyes spoke the same language, but neither had dared to speak the words out loud.

Rahil gave him a startled look, as if his touch was an electric shock that ran straight through her. She drew in a deep breath and pulled her hand away as she turned her attention toward the scope directly in front of her.

It read: June 1, 2050 below a single blip that blinked across the screen.

Ah, even though it is still February, in The Woodlands, Texas spring is in the air and trees! Today, I saw what I thought was a Tufted Titmouse clinging to the branch of a small birch tree. But then I spotted a mother Northern Cardinal and four other tiny versions of her and knew that I had instead spotted an adorable family.

What was even more remarkable than the sight of them was that they sat there and let us watch them.  Not one of them flew away out of fear. The Northern Cardinal family even allowed a little Least Flycatcher to sit on a lower branch without trying to chase it away. I had read that Northern Cardinals were territorial, but there was no evidence of this kind of aggressive behavior here.

So glad that I started bird-watching. They are such adorable creatures!

Sad to say that none of these cute photos are mine. Still, they are great, aren’t they? Click on the photo and it will take you to their origin.

Northern Mockingbird spreads its wings.

Here is yet another delightful experience of mine with a mockingbird as the key player…

The other day, I stood in the neighborhood playground singing the nursery rhyme, “Sing a Song of Six Pence” with the two-year-old boy that I have charge of from 9 to 2, M-F. As we repeated the words and added silly hand gestures to impersonate the black birds in the song, the king, the queen and the maid, I heard the sweet twittering of a mockingbird that perched in a birch tree just beyond the fence that surrounds the play area.

It occurred to me that the little avian was trying its best to sing along with us. So, we started another round of the song and sure enough, the little gray bird with white on its underside and long black tail feathers, tweeted several different bird calls that seemed to indicate that it was doing its best to  mimic into bird song the notes we sang so lustily.

In my mind, this delightful incident went to solidify the amazing character of these little song birds. Their feathers may not possess lush, magnificent colors, but their intelligence and ability to mimic what they hear goes a long way toward their popularity poll.

Also, with the advent of the mockingjays of Hunger Games fame, this little bird should become all that much more popular!

(The photograph at the right, made me think of a beautiful girl, dressed in a kimono, dancing. Or perhaps, the little mockingbird is conducting a symphony.)

Enjoy!

Bird that “Meows” Like a Cat

Northern Mockingbirds near Austin, Texas

The other day, I was at the playground with my almost three-year-old charge, Adam when we heard a cat “meowing“. Or at least, we thought it was a cat. The only problem was that the sound came from a copse of trees that sits near where Adam and his little friends were playing. When I say it came from the trees, I mean the treetops. It was the distinct “meow” that a cat makes, yet it was a repeated syllable like that of a bird call. After a few moments of listening to this amazing sound, I had to conclude that it was in fact avian and not feline that was making the sound.

When I got home, I booted up my laptop and began searching for who the songster could have been. The first thing I did was to look up what I thought was  the most obvious and logical answer to my query–a catbird. Here is the site where you can hear the Gray Catbird‘s voice: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/gray_catbird/id/ac. Yet this was not the sound I had heard from the copse of trees near the playground.

I live in East Central Texas, just north of Houston. So, mockingbirds are quite plentiful there. In fact, I see them everyday that Adam and I go out for our walks. Because I know how talented and awesome these mimickers are, I started a search entitled,”can mockingbirds meow like a cat”. Here is the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yup8slN9FVU. At last, I had found the remarkable songster.

This is the reason I adore these little birds so very much and am incredibly proud to say that they are the Texas State bird. These gray, white and black songbirds may not have the most colorful feathers, but they make up for that with their charming personalities and as multi talented singers.

With the popularity of the Hunger Games and the mockingjay, this little bird should skyrocket even closer to the top of the songbird chart.

As always, I hope you enjoyed this little journey into my world!

The Death Rock

The Poisonous Killing Stone

In the summertime of old Japan, when the oppressive heat and humidity rendered daylight activity all but unbearable, people longed for the night and the scant relief brought by the setting sun. There, amidst a chorus of frogs and insects serenading the coming of the dance of the dead, the people played a game called, “A Gathering of 100 Ghostly Tales”, and silently the spirits would return.
100 lit candles placed in a circle before each of the players each told a ghoulish tale. As each tale ended, the storyteller doused a single candle. As the light slowly faded the tension rose. The game was a ritual of evocation, the expiration of each story and each candle summoned more spiritual energy, transforming the room into a beacon for the dead. With the vanishing of the final light, someone or something terrible was found waiting in the darkness… This story is for the last lit candle…

You sit in the garden near the Palace that was once the Imperial City of Kyoto. It is a beautiful spring day. In fact you are fortunate to have planned your visit to Japan the very day the cherry blossoms are at the most glorious. As you admire the scenery, a young woman happens by and sits on the bench near you. When she turns your way, she smiles sweetly and asks if you have ever heard the story of Tamamo-no-Mae? You shrug and tell her it is your first day in Japan and no you have never heard the story.

Again, the young woman smiles sweetly and gets a far off look in her eyes. This is when you see the smooth, black stone she holds in her hands. It has the glossy look of obsidian, the kind of rock thrown millennia before from the pit of Mount Fuji. You find it odd that the young woman is caressing the glossy stone as if it is a pet of some sort.

You’re not sure why, but a shiver runs up your spine at this particular moment. Your first inclination is to jump up and hurry back to your hotel. But you stay thinking how silly you are being on such a beautiful day with such a pleasant companion to talk to.

As the young woman continues to pet her stone, she begins to tell a story, of a priest named, Gennoh who decided to see the world, so the next morning he and his servant packed their belongings and left the city. One day on their journey, they were crossing a field when they saw a bird fall dead from the sky. They found out in the village that the bird had flown to near Nasuno, the death stone.

A village woman told the priest and his servant, “It is a good thing you did not go too close. You see, the stone steals the life from whatever touches it. Inside the stone is the spirit of Lady Tamamo-no-Mae.

“Who?” the priest asked, confused as to the significance of the spirit.

The woman shook her head and continued. “It is said that the spirit that resides inside the death rock once destroyed kings in both India and China and was later a consort to the Japanese Emperor, Toba. Tamamo-no-mae was her name. She was both beautiful and wise, but evil filled her heart.

“Late one night during a concert at the end of autumn, all the lamps in the emperor’s garden suddenly blew out. To everyone’s horror and amazement, Tamamo-no-mae began to glow like the full moon. Soon after this, Emperor Toba became deathly ill.

“His Astrologer cast the Emperor’s fortune and found that it was Tamamo-no-mae who had caused the Emperor’s illness.

The Astrologer began an exorcism which in turn caused Tamamo-no-mae to writhe in torment. To escape her punishment, she leapt into the air and landed far away on the Nasuno plain.

“But the Emperor sent warriors to find and destroy her. They chased her into a trench and shot arrows at her until her life drained away. It was then that she became the Death-Rock, which has killed all who come too close.”

The young woman sitting near to you smiles once again, but this time you see a gleam in her dark eyes that can only be described as feral. Again, you shiver, but not from the cold.

The young woman rises from the bench. Her back is to you now, but she is still speaking. “That day, Gennoh, the priest did a second exorcism on the stone. The spirit of Tomama-no-mae appeared, begging forgiveness, promising to do good all the rest of her days.”

Silence falls across the garden and you wait to hear the rest of the story. Instead, the young woman walks away. As she does, you see a swishing fox tail following directly behind her and a pale radiance like the moon glowing out from her body.

Much to your horror, your throat begins to feel tight as if someone’s fingers clench around your windpipe. You find that you can no longer draw a breath. In your desperation you look down to see the black stone the young woman was holding now sits on the bench only a foot or so from you. You reach out as if to knock the rock to the ground. Instead, you collapse beneath the bench where only moments before you sat upright.

A couple, walking in the garden, sees your distress and hurries toward. You try to tell them not to come closer. You gesture toward the glistening black rock that seems to writhe as if alive. But the words stick in your throat. You hear jeering laughter like the wind whistling through the tree tops. The next instant everything goes dark as someone blows the remaining candle out…

Clam Lagoon, Adak, Alaska

Clam Lagoon, Adak, Alaska

I got married just two days before flying north alone to Naval Air Station Adak. At 1197 miles from the Alaskan mainland, the island actually sits closer to Russia. Standing at the terminal gate, I turned to give a last wave goodbye to find tears glistening in my new hubby’s blue eyes. Moments later, I slumped in my seat, thankfully tucked near a window where I silently sniffled over the book I brought to read.

I don’t remember the book’s title or the story because a high-pitched voice, like a bird I wanted to smack, chirped near my ear, disturbing my gloom, “You fly a lot?”

My gaze shot up and over to find a woman with dark curls framing her pale face tilted to one side with a sparkling smile radiating happiness. How annoying! Her round green eyes gazed intently in my direction.

Trying my best to scrunch into a ball and disappear inside the pages of my book, I shook my head while mumbling, “No.” I then tried unsuccessfully to force an invisible wall between me and the woman’s searing gaze. Still I could feel her crinkled up her nose and eyes.

I bit my lower lip when I heard a deep intake of breath just before she cooed, “I do. This is my second trip this month. Hmm, let’s see, two weeks ago I flew to a writers’ conference in Hawaii and just last year I landed with my family at Narita International.”

While the woman chattered, her hands gesticulated from side to side and around in circles as her adoring gaze swung toward the row of seats right behind us where a tallish man with broad swimmer’s shoulders, a crew cut and firmly set chin, sat wedged between a toddler girl and an elementary age boy. The girl’s round face, golden Shirley Temple curls, eyes at half-mast, and lips parted dipped sleepily toward the man’s lap, while the boy’s head bent forward in ramp concentration as he thumbed a Game Boy.

The woman pursed her lips and squinted at me. “Do you know where Narita is?”

“No.” I shook my head giving her a sidelong glare as I pressed my lips tightly together and then pushed my gaze back on to the book opened in my lap.

“Japan, it’s in Japan, near Tokyo,” The woman twittered contentedly. She had a dreamy expression on her face as if she had just gotten kissed by Prince Charming.

The next instant, a well-placed foot kicked the back of my seat. My head popped up and over as I turned to glare menacingly through the space between seat backs.

I heard a deep voice command, “Stop that!”

I flinched at the father’s stern voice as  I locked gazes with the boy’s hazel-green eyes peaking up through dark lashes. His lip poked out beneath. The ginormous iceberg in my heart melted as I gave him a wink and for the first time that day, my smile mirrored the one on his face.

An almost burnt-down lit candle on a candle ho...

Image via Wikipedia

(I wrote this for Halloween last year about a Japanese tradition going back to Samurai times of telling ghost stories.)

It is late July, during the time of summer when the Bon Odori, the “Dance of the Dead” is taking place in the village square. After the festivities, someone invites you to a neighbor’s home.

It is nightfall and you walk eagerly to the host house knowing that the game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai–A Gathering of One Hundred Supernatural Tales will take place. (It was popular in the Edo Period of Japan, 1603 to 186).

As you enter the house, you find a room where one hundred candles flicker with yellow-white lights. You take your seat next to the boy who runs errands for the neighborhood grocer. Then you wait as one by one, each guest takes a turn telling stories about kaidan–strange, mysterious, rare or bewitching apparition of which you get you turn as well.

You finish your story, about an Obake shape-shifter that terrifies the maid of a wealthy samurai and then you walk nervously toward the candle closest to you. With a single puff of breath from you lips, the light goes out leaving a trail of smoke floating up toward your face. You turn and hurry back to your seat.

After each ghostly tale, sworn the solemn truth, the storyteller blows one more of the candles out. Little by little, the room grows darker and darker. That’s when you start to hear a strange tap, tap, tapping from outside the circle of friends and neighbors. You wonder if the others hear it as well. The grocer’s boy shakes his head when you ask him, but his eyes have grown wide with… fear?

Nervously, you look around the increasingly dark room. Maybe it was just a tree limb scratching the window. Or a rat gnawing at a baseboard of the wall behind you. And that cold breeze you feel blowing up the back of you neck, surely comes from a draft, an open window or door.

But as the last storytelling reaches the end of their grisly tale, you would swear you see a flicker of something pale and unearthly in a dark corner of the room. Then as the last story ends and the storyteller steps toward the last flickering candle, you will swear you see a ghostly visage hovering next to the woman’s face who sits directly across from you. It reminds you of the Obake you told about in your story. A second later, someone blows out the last candle…
