But after more than a decade of working remotely (from San Diego to Airbnbs in Egypt to beach caf\u00e9s in Bali), I\u2019ve learned that freedom only works if you have the focus to go with it.\ud83d\udc69\ud83c\udffc\u200d\ud83d\udcbb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Whether you\u2019re a coach, designer, or service-based entrepreneur,<\/strong> working outside of a \u201ctraditional\u201d office means learning how to stay productive without burning out. Over the years, these are the habits that have helped me build Create &amp; Wander while keeping that balance of work, travel, and life I never want to give up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffc52f;color:#ffc52f\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Create a Workspace That Works for You<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You don\u2019t need a picture-perfect setup, just one that helps you feel focused and inspired.<\/strong><br>These days, I work from a bright home office with a sit-stand desk, an ergonomic chair, and a dual-screen setup that keeps things easy on my neck and eyes. I\u2019ve filled the space with bold art, plenty of plants, and a cozy bed under the desk for my pup, Skye, because he\u2019s my daily coworker and sidekick.\ud83d\udc36 Your workspace should feel like you \u2014 functional, uplifting, and designed for flow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When I\u2019m working outside the house, I look for spaces that help me stay in the zone. <\/strong>Caf\u00e9s with good energy, coworking spots with strong Wifi and other focused people, or shaded outdoor areas where I can work comfortably on a beautiful day!\u2600\ufe0f Sometimes I head out just for a change of scenery when I need a creative reset; it always sparks new ideas and fresh perspectives for my design work. I like having a few go-to spots that match different moods: somewhere lively for brainstorming and quieter places when I need deep focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A few things that always come with me:<\/strong> my laptop stand, wireless mouse, noise-canceling headphones, and a charger that actually reaches the outlet (trust me, you\u2019ll thank yourself). Bonus points if you bring a travel power strip with extra plugs \u2014 your fellow remote workers will love you for it!\ud83d\udd0c As long as the space feels good, I can work just about anywhere, and that flexibility is exactly why I love running a remote business!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffc52f;color:#ffc52f\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Find Your Flow (and Protect Your Focus)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When you work for yourself, it\u2019s easy for the hours to blend together, especially when there\u2019s no set 9\u20135.<\/strong> After more than a decade of working remotely, I\u2019ve learned that productivity isn\u2019t about strict schedules, it\u2019s about knowing when you work best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tend to do my most focused work in the evenings when everything\u2019s quiet and there are fewer distractions. During the day, if creativity just isn\u2019t flowing, I step away instead of forcing it. That\u2019s one of the biggest perks of running your own business \u2014 you get to design a schedule that works for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That said, even freedom needs a little structure. <\/strong>I still block off chunks of time to stay on track and limit distractions, especially when I\u2019m juggling client projects or deadlines. Putting your phone on Do Not Disturb or using apps like <strong>Opal<\/strong> to block certain apps altogether can be a total game-changer for silencing notifications and avoiding those endless scroll temptations during deep work time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I\u2019m traveling, I definitely get tempted by spontaneous adventures (who wouldn\u2019t?), but I always come back to what needs to get done. It\u2019s all about balance: knowing when to dive in and when to unplug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffc52f;color:#ffc52f\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Keep It Simple with Systems + Tools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The right tools make remote life so much smoother, but the wrong ones can create unnecessary noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I stick to a few essentials that keep my business running no matter where I\u2019m working from:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ClickUp for project management<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flodesk for emails<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dubsado for client workflows<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dropbox + Google Drive for file storage<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Showit (of course!) for my website<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loom for recording walkthroughs and cutting down on meetings<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zoom for staying connected with clients no matter where we\u2019re working from<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ChatGPT for brainstorming, writing support, and simplifying research tasks<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Automate what you can<\/strong>, especially repeat tasks like onboarding or sending invoices. The more you streamline behind the scenes, the more space you create for creativity, strategy, and actually living the remote life you built your business for! \ud83d\ude4c\ud83c\udffb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffc52f;color:#ffc52f\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Keep Creativity Flowing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Working remotely doesn\u2019t always mean constant inspiration. <\/strong>When you\u2019re deep in projects or spending long stretches working solo, it\u2019s easy to feel stuck or disconnected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When that happens, I shift my environment or move my body. Sometimes that\u2019s taking Skye for a walk, going climbing, or working from a caf\u00e9 for a change of pace. Movement and fresh air always help me reset my focus and come back feeling more creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Connection helps just as much as movement. <\/strong>Depending on the kind of remote work you do, you might go hours (or days) without much real conversation. Make time to connect with people who refill your energy, whether that\u2019s meeting a friend for lunch, joining a coworking space, or just calling someone during a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And if you\u2019re a creative entrepreneur, give yourself permission to create for fun too.<\/strong> Block off time for what I call \u201ccreative play\u201d\u2014no deadlines, no rules, no expectations. Those moments of exploration are where your best ideas tend to show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your creativity thrives when you do. So move, connect, and make space to recharge \u2014 it\u2019s just as important as the work itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffc52f;color:#ffc52f\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Protect Your Off Hours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This one took me the longest to learn (and honestly, I still slip up sometimes\ud83d\ude43).<\/strong> When your laptop\u2019s always within reach, it\u2019s easy to fall into the \u201cjust one more email\u201d trap, and suddenly it\u2019s 9 p.m. and you\u2019re still working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set real boundaries around when you\u2019re \u201con\u201d and when you\u2019re not. Communicate your work hours with clients or collaborators, then actually stick to them. The world won\u2019t fall apart if you wait to reply until tomorrow.\ud83d\ude4f\ud83c\udffb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, closing my laptop and heading outside is what keeps me balanced and creative.
