Psychologists across Canada frequently work with clients whose lives are affected by substance use, yet many have had limited formal training in addressing these concerns. This webinar is intended to provide psychologists and psychology trainees with key foundational knowledge and skills. Presenters highlight trends in the Canadian landscape and introduce the concept of substance use health, emphasizing destigmatization, health equity, and the importance of understanding substance use along a broad spectrum. Presenters review key ideas such as the role of language and stigma in shaping clinical engagement, barriers to accessing care, the biopsychosocial model, and diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders. Building on this foundation, the session equips clinicians with practical strategies for integrating substance use health into assessment, case conceptualization, and ongoing treatment. Participants will learn harm reduction principles, motivational communication, and ways to connect clients to appropriate services across varying levels of care. Designed to build confidence and competence, the webinar supports psychologists in effectively navigating substance use health in hospital, community, and private practice settings.

Working with clients who have ADHD is commonplace in clinical practice. ADHD has a unique impact on sexuality and relationships. We will explore how to detect neurodiversity in client profiles as well as common problems related to the impact of ADHD on sexuality. Addressing clinical needs with a neurodivergent lens is an essential skill for all clinicians. In this presentation, we discuss key elements of neurodivergent sexuality specific to individuals with ADHD, including transitions, distractions, sensory issues, and impulsivity. We also explore sexual concerns in neurodivergent populations specific to the impact of hyperfocus, anxiety, and sexual dysfunctions. Finally,  we briefly discuss the importance of identifying and resolving concerns related to sexual victimization within neurodivergent populations.

Mindfulness involves paying attention to what is being experienced in the present moment, with a nonjudgmental, unbiased and non-reactive attitude. Careful research continues to show that integrating mindfulness training with cognitive and behavioural interventions is a potent contribution to the treatment of a wide range of disorders. Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (MiCBT) is an evidence-based sophisticated integration of mindfulness core principles and traditional CBT. MiCBT consists of a four-stage transdiagnostic treatment approach, i.e., it is applicable with a wide range of conditions and ages. It is based on the integration of traditional establishment of mindfulness with well established principles and methods from cognitive and behavioural traditions. The aim of this workshop is to introduce you to MiCBT to assist your work with acute and chronic conditions, and improve the prevention of relapse in a wide range of psychological disorders. It will describe the important theoretical framework underlying MiCBT and introduce participants to the use of these skills across a wide range of chronic and acute conditions. Importantly, this workshop will expand your common understanding of operant conditioning and provide a strong neurobehavioural basis for integrating mindfulness training with traditional CBT. Please note that the article referred to in the video, “Immediate and Lasting Chronic Pain Reduction Following a Brief Self-Implemented Mindfulness-Based Interoceptive Exposure Task: A Pilot Study” (Caroun, Simmons, & Shires, 2020) is a supplemental reading that is hosted externally and is not available free of charge as part of the course materials. The article is not part of the materials required to pass the course but is recommended as supplemental reading. Access may be purchased here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12671-017-0823-x. This course will take approximately 4 hours to complete
