The UK Metropolitan Police on April 11 arrested 523 people for supporting Palestine Action, a proscribed organization. Those arrested ranged in age from 18 to 87 years old. (Jurist)

Several thousand protesters gathered at Habima Square in Tel Aviv on April 11 to protest against the war and Netanyahu government, marking the sixth consecutive week of demonstrations since the start of the joint Israeli-US military operation against Iran. Demonstrations also took place in other cities across the country, including Jerusalem and Haifa. The mobilization came one day after Israel’s Supreme Court blocked a government effort to shut down the protests, although it allowed police to impose limits on attendance. These limits were apparently not enforced. (Haaretz, ToI)

In a separate demonstration April 12, ultra-orthodox protesters opposed to military conscription blocked Jerusalem’s Jaffa Road, leading to several arrests. (JP)

Erick Valencia-Salazar, a California man who is said to have co-founded Mexico’s Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG), pleaded guilty on April 8 to a federal narcotics conspiracy charge.

Valencia-Salazar was arrested in Tapalpa, Jalisco, in 2022 for conspiring to send thousands of kilograms of cocaine to the US on behalf of the CJNG. His transfer to the US was part of a collaborative effort with the Mexican government, to ensure the transfer of 29 cartel leaders. His guilty plea carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Known as “El 85,” Valencia-Salazar left the Milenio Cartel to start his own cartel with Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the drug kingpin later known as “El Mencho.” He supplied AK-47 and AR-15 rifles to the Milenio cartel’s gunmen before becoming responsible for the recruitment of hundreds of CJNG members. The CJNG is now one of Mexico’s most powerful and deadly drug cartels, reportedly responsible for instability on both sides of the border. The cartel was officially designated by the US as a “foreign terrorist organization” in 2025. (Jurist)

The US District Court for the District of Massachusetts on April 8 enjoined the Trump administration’s removal of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopians in the US, allowing thousands to remain under the designation while the case continues in litigation. (Jurist)

ICE agents shot and injured a man, Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, in California on April 7 during an attempted apprehension. The agency’s use of force has been a source of controversy and scrutiny following numerous violent incidents – including the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis earlier this year. Following violent incidents, ICE has a record of putting out demonstrably false accounts of what transpired, which appears to be the case in Mendoza Hernandez’s case as well. (TNH)

Over 80 people are believed to have drowned following yet another migration-related shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea on April 7. This one took place off of Libya’s northwestern coast. Two merchant boats rescued 32 survivors. Nearly 1,000 people have died in migration-related shipwrecks already this year in the Mediterranean—a spiralling toll even before the onset of summer, when departures and deaths usually both increase. Six months ago, on Oct. 10, Israel and Hamas agreed to a 20-point US ceasefire plan that was supposed to bring an end to the two-year Israeli military campaign that has laid waste to the Gaza Strip, immiserated its population, and been deemed a genocide by a UN commission of inquiry, multiple rights groups, and numerous experts. Since then, Israel has continued to carry out near-daily strikes on the enclave, killing over 730 people and injuring over 2,000. While the level of violence has declined from the full-scale war, the continued attacks do not qualify as a ceasefire, according to a new scorecard published by five humanitarian organizations that evaluates the implementation of the US plan against its stated objectives. In every area the groups evaluated—including aid access, civilian protection, reconstruction, and freedom of movement—Israeli authorities have failed or only partially implemented the agreement. Daily life in Gaza remains stark, with Israel physically occupying more than half the strip, choking off aid, preventing Palestinians from returning to their homes, and carrying out widespread demolitions of property. “This word ceasefire doesn’t reflect the reality around us. Ceasefire suggests safety. It suggests stability. It suggests the beginning of recovery. It suggests the beginning of reconstruction. Here in Gaza, none of these conditions exist,” Ghada Al Haddad, a communications officer with Oxfam in Gaza, said during a press conference introducing the scorecard. (TNH)

At least eight migrants deported from the US arrived in Uganda on April 1. The Ugandan Foreign Ministry only admitted to accepting the deportees on Friday, after widespread media coverage of a statement released by the Ugandan Law Society (ULS).

On April 2, the ULS and the East Africa Law Society released a joint statement announcing that 12 people were about to be forcibly removed from the US and “dumped” in Uganda. The 12 were scheduled to arrive aboard a privately-owned aircraft without the engagement of relevant state institutions such as the Directorate of Citizenship & Immigration Control, according to the ULS.

The deportees who arrived in Uganda are African, but not Ugandan, according to the statement by the Foreign Ministry. The Foreign Ministry accepted the migrants pursuant to the Agreement for Cooperation in the Examination of Protection Requests signed in July 2025 by the US and Uganda. This “Safe Third Country” agreement permits nationals from other countries in Africa to be sent to Uganda in alignment with the principles of non-refoulement, which means that no person may be sent back to a country where they would face torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Article 4 of the agreement stipulates that operating procedures will be drafted to implement the agreement. It is not clear if those procedures have been drafted.

“Third Country Deportations” like this are permitted under US law following litigation, which brought the matter to the US Supreme Court in June 2025. The high court stayed a preliminary injunction while the case is pending. (Jurist)
