Keeping Government Workers Happy and Comfortable Year-Round
To help Douglas County cut energy use by 30%, CSC began integrating Automated Logic into the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center. The team digitized variable air volume boxes in the ductwork. They also made it easy to monitor air handlers, chillers, and office temperatures from a central platform.
Since the building entered night setback mode after 5 p.m., the team noticed office temperatures near windows dropped more rapidly. This energy loss made it harder to maintain comfort. CSC quickly resolved the issue by programming those zones on a separate temperature schedule, ensuring consistent comfort for employees at all times.
Implementation
One year after implementation, the county reduced peak energy demand significantly and saved $55,000 in energy costs. This success put the project on track for full ROI in just 3.2 years.
Encouraged by the results, the maintenance director proposed expanding digital controls into the Douglas County Courthouse. After county commissioners approved, CSC replaced all pneumatic systems with more efficient digital controls. They also upgraded the boiler to a 99.6% efficient model and installed variable frequency drives on air handlers. These upgrades created a soft start and improved airflow control.
Additionally, CSC outfitted the Douglas County Jail and Youth Services buildings with Automated Logic systems. The resulting energy savings are now reinvested by the county’s Sustainability Department. These funds support public energy education and help launch future energy-saving projects.
