The International Society of Bassists welcomes Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten to its board of directors. Steve and Victor will share the newly created position representing electric bass as co-chairs. (Pictured at the 2023 ISB convention, left to right: Steve Bailey, Gary Karr and Victor Wooten)
Steve Bailey is a pioneering master of the 6-string fretless bass, touring and recording artist, columnist and sought-after educator. He spent ten years on the faculty of the Bass Institute of Technology in California and served as artist-in-residence at Coastal Carolina University. Steve is currently chair of the Berklee College of Music's bass department. When he's not playing or teaching, you'll likely to find Steve on his surf board!
Victor Wooten is a five-time Grammy-winning bassist, composer, performer, recording artist and educator. He is the author of The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music and The Spirit of Music: The Lesson Continues. Victor hosts immersive music camps annually at the nonprofit Victor Wooten Center for Nature and Music near Nashville, Tennessee. He is a visiting scholar in performance studies at the Berklee College of Music.
Victor and Steve are also co-founders of the powerhouse bass-and-drum ensemble Bass Extremes. And like so many ISB members, Steve and Victor play both double bass and electric bass!
Says ISB President-Elect and 2027 Convention Chair Dennis Whittaker, "The International Society of Bassists is proud to have Steve and Victor helping us inspire, educate and connect bassists around the world across all styles and all instruments. Since Gary Karr founded the ISB in 1967, there has been unprecedented growth in bass talent, career opportunities, equipment, technology and the role of commercial and amateur music in peoples’ lives. More and more, working bassists are expected to be proficient in both upright and electric bass. As the ISB prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2027, the bass presence and excellence that Gary Karr envisioned has surpassed his expectations. In fact, Gary once said that in his next life, he would love to be a 6-string fretless electric bass player."
