If you all could do me a small favor...
would you critique my icons here?

It'd be great if I could get some feedback, so I know what I should work on. I think I have a general feel and style, but I'm inconsistent. This way I know what you guys like and I can combine that with what I like, so everyone's happy.

Yay.
Also, I'm going to be away from the 26th to the 29th.
Four whole days without me - how will you survive ;)?
So, please don't think I'm dead or anything, I'm just out visiting colleges (joy...)
After come back, I'll most likely release an icons batch and a brush set.

Tutorial: Colored bg with masks

technique: how to make a colored background while still using a mask.
difficulty: easy
program: PS7+ (tough to translate, unless there's a masking option) / variation for PSP7+

from		this
	to

1) PREPARE YOUR BASE;
So to be quick and because it works well, I used one of my actions.

2) PICK DESIRED BG COLOR FOR FOREGROUND;
I tend to use colors in the pictures...so in this case, I used #E1D0B3.

3) NEW LAYER WITH COLOR;
Make a new layer and fill it with #E1D0B3 (or you can make a "fill layer." Basically, make sure you have a new layer on top of your base with your chosen color.

4) ADD A LAYER MASK;
Find the layer mask button ( ) on your layer palette (if it's not visible go to window > layers and create a new one. The one you get should be all white.
(CRASH COURSE ON MASKS: White indicates complete visibility. Black is completely invisible, and as you can figure out, gray is in between (translucent) and varies with darkness. )

ANYWAYS, now choose the brush you want to use. Of course, I used one from my recent pack.

With the foreground set to #000000, imprint it on mask. MAKE SURE THE MASK IS SELECTED; otherwise, you'll just get a big black spot...not that attractive.

5) FINISHING TOUCHES;
Obviously you add text, more brushes, etc. Whatever you want to finish it.

THE END.

VARIATION FOR PSP - this gives you basically the same result (I can't see a big difference), but requires more work from your part, unfortunately.

1) PREPARE YOUR BASE;
As always.

5) SET TO SCREEN;
Set the layer to screen.

5) ACHIEVE OPAQUE COLOR;
Though this effect may interest some of you, I know many of you probably want to get something like the PS7 effect, with the color not being transparent.
So...

Make a new layer.
Select approximately where the background colors are with feather 30 or 40.

Fill in with your background color (in my case, #E1D0B3).
You can also use the paintbrush to color in parts that aren't close to the fading.

6) FINISHING TOUCHES;
Obviously you add text, more brushes, etc. Whatever you want to finish it.

THE END.

You can copy step by step if you'd like...but believe me, that won't help you!

Tutorial: Somewhat transparent borders

Compatibility: PS7+ (may be translated, I don't know)
Description: To create borders that seem to have random translucent areas.
Goal: >> or

Create a new document.
My settings:
Width: 100 pixels
Height: 100 pixels
Resolution: 72 pixels/inch

Go to your toolbar and find the selection tools. Most likely it's on rectangular marquee. Depending on how thick you want your borders, you can leave it as it is. I'm going to make a 1 pixel borders so I decided to choose single row/single column marquee.

Make it how big you want it to be and erase any extra bits.

Add a layer mask set on all visible (all white).

Go to the paint bucket tool and change it to a gradient. Choose the black/white gradient.

Pick reflected gradient from the gradient toolbar.

Drag it one way randomly within your border. I dragged it diagonally from the top right to the bottom left, giving me this:

Simplistic, but I think it's fun. Hope this helps! I also used this effect (and some copying, rotating, and pasting) to make:

So, have fun! What's great is unless you drag it exactly the same way (very doubtful), you will get different borders every time!

Description: Some lyrics from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. I skipped a couple, but maybe for a MR Text 2? Haha, jk, maybe. Moulin Rouge = amazing, romantic movie that makes me cry and bubble up inside. I love the music! I had to do this...I was on a text making-ness...and after recently watching Moulin Rouge, it was just PERFECT ^_^.

**A little change, the image pack is not a group of 45 individual images but one image. That should work, and maybe be even better for you. (hm 40+ images opened...).

2) Save target-as/Save link-as. Last resort, you can just click it.
