Senator Turns Against Common Core

Republican Sen. David Vitter, currently running for governor of Louisiana, has made waves by turning against the Common Core standards he defended just months ago.

“After listening to literally thousands of parents, teachers, and others since then, I don’t believe that we can achieve that Louisiana control, buy-in and success I’m committed to if we stay in Common Core,” Vitter said in an email to supporters of his gubernatorial run. Educrats Scrap Instruction for Common Core Test Prep

Here’s a new twist on test prep: Get rid of midterms and finals (tests presumably made by teachers). Say that you are doing it to find more “instructional time.” Then use that “instructional time” to “instruct” students in how to take a new Common Core standardized test.

That is what is happening at a number of schools in New Jersey, including Glen Ridge High School, where, according to the Glen Ridge Voicet, Principal Dirk Phillips sent home a letter to parents explaining the shift and told the Board of Education that the school feared that it would not have enough time to properly prepare students for the PARCC Common Core test. The Dog Ate My Common Core Homework

Common Core math has been the discussion of many frustrated parents and the cause of many shed tears over homework. These rants are not limited to those who are under-educated, in fact, several have been posted by parents who hold advanced degrees in one of the STEM fields. Yet, Common Core advocates have decided the fix for these woes is to have parents go back to school to learn how to help their elementary kids with their homework. Seems logical… Read more here.

Common Core Test Group Projects Widespread Failure

One of the two major groups designing standardized tests aligned with Common Core has released how students are expected to score on its inaugural exam next spring, and its prediction isn’t pretty.

According to anticipated score distributions announced by the Smarter Balanced testing consortium, almost two-thirds of students taking the test next year will fall below proficiency in mathematics, while nearly six in 10 will fail to measure up in English. No Books, Just Tests. How American Children are Being Set Up For Failure.

In a move likely to cause political and academic stress in many states, a consortium that is designing assessments for the Common Core State Standards released data Monday projecting that more than half of students will fall short of the marks that connote grade-level skills on its tests of English/language arts and mathematics. It’s for the Kids, Right? Nope!

In defense of Common Core, some commentators have stood aside the Common Core Standards Initiative and blamed opponents of high-stakes testing for distorting the public’s understanding of the benefits of the national standards. But when you look at the history of the push for national standards you realize Common Core is all about testing.Common Core really stinks. Read more here.

Arne Duncan Thinks We’re Stupid

Education Secretary Arne Duncan must believe that those “suburban moms” he talked about back in 2013 are an awfully gullible bunch. In response to continued pushback on testing, Duncan and the Council of Chief State School Officers are now saying that they, by golly, are against excessive standardized testing, too.
