OFFICE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE POLICY

Strengthening trust in AI activities in Utah through data-driven policy, innovation-enabling regulatory relief, and timely regulatory adjustments.

First-in-the-Nation Office for AI Policy, Regulation, and Innovation

The Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy consults with businesses, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to facilitate dialogue on regulatory proposals to foster innovation and safeguard public safety. The office also has authority to craft regulatory relief agreements to facilitate novel deployments of AI (see Utah Code § 13-72-302).

Through these ground-breaking measures, Utah is setting a new standard for innovative governing and leading the nation in AI innovation and regulation.

Key Objectives in AI Policy

1. Observe and Learn - Industry is evolving quickly and we can't regulate what we don't understand.

2. Protect the Public - Consumers must be safeguarded from forseeable harms such as deception, fraud, and violations of data privacy.

3. Foster Innovation - To attract innovative companies, Utah must demonstrate collaborative regulatory reform.

Pro-Human AI Initiative

Utah believes AI should bring people and ideas together. That's why we've partnered with community leaders to create the Pro-Human AI Initiative. With a pro-human approach, AI can amplify human potential while remaining clear, accountable, and responsive to human needs.

The Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP) partners with companies building responsible AI. We learn from real-world use and transform those insights into policies that support safe, effective innovation.
