  1. These are some pretty HUGE assumptions you are making.

    1) How do you connect the consumer of OIL with producing terrorists? What is the causal factor there. Not just a CONNECTION, but the CAUSE.

    2) Though I am not convinced that the impact of man-made CO2 is as great as some make it out to be, I’ll go along with your argument that by consuming oil we are producing man-made CO2. So if we were to totally eliminate the use of oil (which doesn’t appear practical at this point), are you saying we would then eliminate terrorism? (See comment on point 1).

    3) If we were to totally eliminate the consumption of oil (see point 2), how would that stop the destruction of the middle east? There are factions in the middle east that have been at war for thousands of years, long before oil was discovered or needed. Further, this fails to consider how eliminating oil would impact the economy of the middle east. You say (again, I don’t see empirical proof or anything providing a connection) that it would stop the destruction of middle eastern culture. Again, the wars there have been going on internally for thousands of years. Even if eliminating oil removed outside influences, it is not clear that it would allow the middle eastern culture to flourish.

    4) How would eliminating oil impact the economy of the middle east? Per Wikipedia, “Collectively, the region is best known for producing and exporting oil. The oil industry significantly impacts the entire region, both through the wealth that it generates and through the movement of labor.” Would the loss of income and jobs create greater unrest and a resultant increase in both internal warfare and terrorism? I’m not saying it would, what I’m saying is that this question remains unanswered, and when you eliminate something (like oil, as you are proposing), it is not automatically clear that all the impacts would be positive. Saying that it would “stop the destruction of the middle east culture and making them into terrorists for trying to defend themselves” presumes that defense is the ONLY reason they become terrorists.

So, would eliminating the use of oil be the “silver bullet” that would result in peace in the middle east, and elimination of terrorism? I think there are far too many factors involved to jump to that conclusion, and is frankly wishful thinking on your part.
