Issue 22 / WATER has dropped! November 30th was the official release day for the latest issue, which means the digital issues went out to Digital Subscribers, Patreon supporters, and artists/contributors. Usually we ship out the issue this day as well, but the zines have been delayed on their way from the printer to us. SO fulfillment is slightly behind schedule, but the zines will go out as soon as they arrive to us.

ALSO we have some rad merch to go along with this issue - a water glass, a tote bag, a sports bra, and of course a t-shirt that says “Coffee is Water.” Check out the merch line here.

I have a few updates for you regarding June & July happenings…

Pride Fundraiser
Happy Pride! We are celebrating this month with a fundraiser for two coffee industry leaders, Julien and Veronica. If you haven’t had the pleasure to meet them, you have undoubtedly heard of their important work. Julien is the US Cup Taster’s Champ from 2021, and teaches cupping and sensory education. Veronica is the founder of Glitter Cat, a competition training program for folks from marginalized communities, and has done quite well in barista competition herself throughout the years.

Both Julien and Veronica have courageously sought treatment for mental health challenges recently, which has come at a high cost to each of them financially. Coffee folks are rallying around them to support them through these tough times.

We are offering a 2-zine deal featuring our two queerest zines, Issue 11 (a double issue with Glitter Cat) and Issue 12 (with a collab curated by Trans & Caffeinated). You can get both these zines for $20, and all $20 goes to the fundraiser. So basically you’re getting 2 amazing art zines for the price of shipping AND you’re giving to the fundraiser. It’s an all-around win for everyone!

Outgoing Apparel
The Issue 20 apparel will be going away at the end of July. If you haven’t purchased it yet, here is the link to check it out. It’s the EARTH All-Over Hoodie (my personal favorite), the EARTH Tee, and the EARTH mug. We’ll be releasing new merch with elements from the Issue 21 / FIRE cover design once the issue is released, so keep an eye out for that as well! But until then, get the EARTH designs while they’re still available.

Issue 21
The next zine is Issue 21 with the theme of FIRE. It’ll be released at the end of July. I’m also hoping to host a belated Zine Release Party in mid-August, so keep an eye out for more info on that. And if you don’t already have a subscription, please sign up now! You’ll be sure to get the most recent issue right when it drops. Plus it helps me pay artists & writers each issue, and helps toward Coffee People Zine’s financial sustainability (something I’m still working toward - so please help me get there!).

I have extended the submission deadline for Coffee People Zine Issue 21 / FIRE by one week. The new deadline is next Thursday, June 15th. I heard from a few people that their spring is getting away from them, so I figured I’d add a few extra days for folks to catch up.

Hey Coffee People,

Long time no update! I’m here to tell you about two exciting CPZ things happening within the next week.

1. Issue 20 / EARTH is officially dropping on March 30th! (Pre-Orders available now.) This marks the first issue of the zine’s sixth year in print, which is pretty awesome to think about. And this one is absolutely beautiful. I’ve taken the cover in a slightly new direction (illustrations to bring us forward, but going back to the lower-case logo that appeared on Issues 01-03). There are 5 commissioned articles by coffee people in Hawai’i, Brazil, Colombia, Memphis, and Minneapolis. It’s the biggest issue EVER with 66+ artists over 128 pages. I’m super excited to share this with the world!

2. Zine Release Party for Issue 20 on April 1st (no, it’s not a joke!) at Curioso Coffee Bar in Minneapolis, MN. It’s been YEARS since we’ve had a zine release party (the last one was for Issue 07 in 2019 *mind blown*) and it’s about time to celebrate in person again. We’ll have coffee people artists selling their art, zines, and more. Plus music and poetry by coffee people! It’ll be super low-key chill times to hang out at a rad coffee shop together. If you live in the Twin Cities, please come by! Bring whomever - this isn’t exclusive to coffee people. Everyone is welcome :)

Those are the time-sensitive updates for now! A few other quick things:

• Coffee People Zine is going from 4 to 3 issues/year. Each issue will be bigger so the same number of artists will be featured each year, but the printing and shipping costs will decrease. The intention is that this will make the zine more sustainable (financially and also energetically/emotionally for me, Kat).

• I’m still trying to get 200 new subscribers (we just passed 175 so it’s getting close!). If you haven’t subscribed to Coffee People Zine yet, please consider it! There are print and digital options, as well as options for coffee shops/cafés. Every new subscriber gets the zine closer to being financially viable.

TLDR: Printing costs have more than doubled and sponsorships are way down since the beginning of the year. In order to keep Coffee People Zine in print, we need new subscribers. If you love coffee and creativity, help us get there by signing up for one of the subscriptions below.

Have you enjoyed Coffee People Zine, but haven't signed up for the subscription yet? Well, now's the time! As printing costs have more than doubled and sponsorships are down over 60% since last year, Coffee People Zine is at risk of going out of print. 

It breaks by heart to consider the potential end, so I'm focusing on other ways to fund this project. One way is to increase recurring orders, aka: subscriptions! I've crunched the numbers and calculated that I need to bring on 200 new subscribers by the end of the year. That seems like a big number, but it's really not! When I think of all the baristas, roasters, coffee shop owners, and coffee-loving customers who have gotten excited about the zine, 200 is a tiny fraction, an easily attainable number.

SO! If you value the creativity of the coffee community and want to see the zine continue, please consider signing up for a subscription. The options are:

Coffee Person Subscription (Annual): $54.00 / year
- Perfect for the pay-ahead type. You'll pay once and get a copy of all the issues released in that year. You save on shipping, plus get the exclusive add-ins and swag with each issue.

Coffe Person Subscription: $14.25 / issue, or $25 to start with 2
- For those who like to "pay as you go." This option charges you each time a new issue is released (every 3 months). You'll also get exclusive add-ins and swag with each issue.

Digital Subscription: $5.00 / issue
- If you don't want the print zine, you can still get the new issue every time with a Digital Subscription. You'll receive a download link each time the zine is released so you can get the zine on your screens!

Coffee Shop Subscription: $14.25 / issue, or $25 to start with 2
- For coffee shops, roasteries, and cafés that want to keep a copy in your store for customers and baristas to browse. PLUS we'll add you to our Google Map of coffee shops around the world that support Coffee People Zine.

This magazine has always been a passion project, not a super lucrative business for me (big surprise: there's not a lot of money in print!). Even still, I want to keep the zine going. I believe it provides a valuable platform for coffee people worldwide to share their art, creativity, and brilliance. AND it puts money in people's hands by paying contributing artists, commissioned writers, and cover designers/illustrators. To keep this going, I need the help and support of the community - that's YOU!
