[My favorite local coffeehouse here in San Diego is Lestats. In addition to being a friendly, 24/7 venue for refreshment, conversation and entertainment, it also features numerous examples of announcement/events flyers, literature and the alternative press - all free for the taking. Maybe your local coffeehouse offers the same and if it does, you'll probably be interested in this "Freep" update.]

In the late 1960s and early 1970s - back through the mists of time, in the stone(d) age - long before desktop publishing, personal computers and the Internet - just about every major city or medium sized town had access to something known as an "underground newspaper". I don't know what your local underground paper was called (or if you even had one) but in the Washington DC area where I spent my Wonder Bread years, we had ‘The Washington Free Press’ and ‘Quicksilver Times’.

With a definitely antiwar flavor and counterculture approach, they provided a clarion call to the mostly under-30 crowd. These crudely and colorfully produced tabloids on cheap newsprint represent a now mostly lost form and style of alternative journalism and activism. And peace wasn't the only issue. Underground papers were a lively forum and rallying point for many ideas, actions and groups. Feminism and women's rights, gay liberation, civil rights for minorities, Native American issues, the environment, the global struggle for justice, to name just a few. Underground newspapers provided a voice for the poor and downtrodden everywhere.

One of the first on the scene was ‘The Los Angeles Free Press’ and now ‘The Freep’ (as it’s affectionally known) is back!

Apple recalls some laptop batteries

iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 Battery Exchange Program

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities, Apple is voluntarily recalling certain lithium ion rechargeable batteries that were sold worldwide from October 2004 through May 2005 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. These batteries were manufactured by LG Chem, Ltd. of South Korea.

The affected batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Apple has received six consumer reports of these batteries overheating. If you have a recalled battery, please stop using it and order a replacement battery immediately. Once you have removed the battery, plug in the AC adapter to power the computer. If you must temporarily use your computer with the battery, do not leave it unattended and check for signs of overheating.

Apple has initiated a worldwide exchange program and will provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge.

I have two different diaries on Free Open Diary.

The First One, "IKILLEDHEIDI" consists of poetry that I either write at the spur of the moment or that are from my collections of analogies that I have kept for over four years that I have written.

The Second One, "HI_" I just recently set up about a week ago that will feature songs that I will be writing and hoping to put onto a poetry album (spoken word) ni the future because I had released a demo tape called "DEEP 6IN'" but it flopped.

'The Garage Cafe'

I was in Sac a while ago, and whenever I go up there I make sure to stop at this Coffee place on 16th street. It's called 'The Garage Cafe'. Cheap delicious coffee! When ever I go to Sac it's on my list of places to go and chill at. So if any of you are ever in Sac, be sure to check it out.

I have this coupon card thingy from like 3 years ago that I still use the few times I get up there :Þ
