What is Cobb Can Move?
Cobb Can Move is a survival horror game where the rules change. It was built by the indie developer abho in roughly a week for Major Jam 7: Wild — a game jam it went on to win — and has been updated steadily ever since.
You play a lone warden trapped in a dark, procedurally generated dungeon. Somewhere in that dungeon is Cobb: a long-armed red creature that hunts you in the black. Each level is a race — you scavenge for coal and burn it to keep rooms lit (Cobb fears the light), flip breakers to open your escape route, and slip past Cobb to the exit before it reaches you.
It is a top-down, pixel-art roguelite: short, sharp, and genuinely tense. The Story campaign runs seven levels and most runs are over in minutes — but few of them end well. With a 4.8-star rating from hundreds of players, it has become one of the standout free horror games on itch.io.
Why every run feels different
Cobb Can Move would be a simple game of cat and mouse if Cobb hunted the same way every time. It doesn't. Every level rolls a new rule. On one floor Cobb tracks you by sound; on the next by sight, by the scent trail you leave behind, by its long reach, by moving faster, or by splitting into multiple copies of itself. The level can also place a debuff on you — freezing or starvation.
The game shows you the rule on a banner as each level begins. Reading that banner and rewriting your plan on the spot is the entire game. Our rules explained guide breaks down every modifier and how to beat it.

Quick tips to survive longer
New to the dungeon? A few habits keep most runs alive past the first scare:
- Read the rule banner before you move. Knowing how Cobb hunts this level decides everything else.
- Light is safety, but light is also exposure — keep rooms lit enough to move, not lit enough to advertise yourself.
- Carry a rock. A direct hit stuns Cobb, and a thrown rock pulls a sound-hunting Cobb away from you.
- Never start a task you cannot finish before Cobb arrives.
Our tips and strategy hub goes much deeper, with separate guides for beginners and for long Endless runs.

What does "the rules change" mean?
Every level rolls a new random modifier that changes how Cobb hunts you — by sound, sight, smell, reach, by splitting in two, or by moving faster — and can also apply a debuff to you. Reading and adapting to that rule is the core of the game.
