We've got three Asians in the program. Tae was born and raised in South Korea, and Mike is a second-gen Chinese American, but neither get mistaken for natives. On the other hand, people will immediately turn to Courtney Akemi Takashima when we walk into a building... and get some cross of surprised and annoyed when she doesn't have a clue what they're saying. It's not her fault that she barely speaks the language -- she's fourth generation and her grandparents grew up during the post-internment, pro-assimilation years -- but they act like it was. Because she's also pureblood Nihonjin, and it's far more apparent to the locals than it is to me, so they expect to deal with one of their own when they see her. Keep in mind that Justin (possibly the only redhead in the country right now) knows twice as much Japanese as she does (which still isn't at a conversational level), and you'll see the problem.

Speaking of Justin, he's sorta shifting in and out of good health. The migraines seem to be hitting him mostly in the mornings (which is when class is... you can consider that convenient or inconvenient depending on whether he'd rather ditch class or pass the upcoming midterm >_<).
