some unknown person is copying the public entries of this livejournal to "xanthipe" on ourstory.com. since these entries are public and there's no contact information for this "xanthipe" available (contacting ourstory.com directly hasn't even gotten me an autoresponse), there's nothing i can do about this.

if you're thinking of copying anything from this journal onto another site, please ask me first. if you'd like to archive my fiction or meta, i will very likely say yes. if you are -- as this "xanthipe" is doing -- wanting to copy my personal daily chatter (went to a movie, yay curling game, etc.) i really really want to know why.

yuletide redux

and now, some recs and the reveal:

to hell with anything unrefined was my primary yuletide story, for nyssa23. it is vers libre poetry in the style of don marquis' archy & mehitabel. i put mehitabel amongst the suffragettes and brought in a couple of prohibitionists. i illustrated it! (did you know that the new york times online archives go back to 1851? it's really quite awesome, especially for setting a story about a new york city newspaper columnist in 1917.) glossing and kassrachel read it through for me and i managed to get it in nearly a week early, which is unheard-of in my yuletide career, opening the way for:

eyes wide open, a yuletide treat for baranduin, which is a postscript for robin mckinley's spindle's end, a retelling of "sleeping beauty" which i've always particularly loved. i highly recommend the book, and you shouldn't really read the story without having read the book -- for one, it won't make much sense, and for two, it does rather spoil one of the twists of the ending. i wrote this one in a terrific rush on christmas eve, but i'm glad i posted it; it turned out small but rather pretty, i think (and there are only two glaring typos which will need fixing at some point).

and while i was thusly engaged, lilyayl was writing my cyberiad story! still many ♥&hearts♥ and i shall have to see what else zie's done. there's so much more to read!

i don't think i had any particular fic drafts up there in the last month that weren't just refinements of drafts also posted earlier, so if we do get data back from a month ago i'm okay there. also, not cleaning out my inbox recently has been vindicated in an unfortunately enabling way. still with the wibbling, though!

hey, y'all, i don't know if you've seen yet, but free lj accounts are no longer available. you can only have plus (with ads) or paid (with money up front).

does anyone know what happens if you take an existing basic account and switch it to plus -- can you switch back, or are you stuck at plus with all the ads? eta: claire reports that you can still switch an existing (created before 13 march 2008) account between basic and plus.

ij, by the way, just did a new code push about an hour ago; if you're trying to open a new account over there, there may be some glitches going on tonight while the worst of the transition is smoothed out. (fyi, the ij announcements journal asked users several days ago whether they wanted the code push sooner and buggier or later and more stable, and listened when people requested sooner. in case that sort of thing is of interest to anyone.)

the awful thing is, of course, that every time i've logged into lj lately i've spotted a new feature that i really like. i really do see the technical development of the journalling software kicked into high gear here. i just don't see the old lj community spirit.

and hell yes, i'm still pissed off about the age restriction thing.

so after about a month of noticing that my vision was getting blurry when i was tired, i finally scheduled an eye exam for yesterday evening -- and, yup, i need glasses.

now my entire immediate family is bespectacled!

i am trying to focus on the positive, which is that glasses are sexy accessories, and not on the negative, which is that glasses are sexy accessories. (because seriously, people. do i strike you as the type to accessorize? i don't even wear a watch. i grew up never quite knowing what time it was, which probably explains a lot when you think about it.)

(hair dye is not an accessory.)

(okay, piercings are accessories, but i only have one and it's not generally visible!)

anyway, internets! what kind of glasses should i get?

My home network is having connectivity issues, notably with about half of the sites that I need to connect to today for my OTW work. I know it's my network and not the sites in question because I have no trouble connecting to my shell account and no trouble connecting my shell acount to these sites. Wiki editing in Lynx textboxes which can't handle inserting new lines of text = simultaneous fail and win, yes/no/needs more beer?

..Okay, I've got more beer and I've figured out how to open Lynx textboxes with a vi editor. Whew! Clearly, beer is important to this process! I'd still like to, y'know, connect directly to the site, but this'll do me for now.
