This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

<lj-repost button="And you can always push this button to repost on your LJ and spread the word">

cmattg - Not my article, but reposted and endorsed.

Triggered by reading a discussion of "Southern heritage." To wit:

Do we ride around in carriages pulled by gasoline-powered robot horses? NO.

Will the toilets of 2107 be cleaned by humanoid robots with scrub-brushes and Clorox? DOUBTFUL.

Has horse-handling as a skill-set gone from "common as dirt" to "rare and valuable"? YES.

Will the same thing happen to janitorial skills? UHHHHH......

...which is where the train derailed. But thinking about some of the stuff I've had to do to take care
of the electronics in my office, I suspect "keeping the important stuff clean" will be folded into the
larger set of tech-caretaking skills. Non-important stuff will presumably be made of materials
that can either clean themselves, or shed the dirt in a form that's easily scooped up
by a Roomba-equivalent.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm. Looking around LJ it seems quite a few people had really freaky dreams last night. I don't usually remember my dreams, but I do remember one from just before I woke up that seems to(barely) qualify for the theme:

I was back in high school - not the school I actually went to but some place I've never seen. And I was getting hassled by the principal because It was my first day, and I'd accidentally started a racing game on one of the school computers and I couldn't break out of it. After he left, I distinctly heard myself think, "How can I be back in high school when I remember graduating college?" So that took the tension level way down. I think that was where I woke up, though.

I've been messing around with the Random Pairing Generator

and here are some examples and commentary

Anya (BtVS)/Susan (Chronicles of Narnia)
-This seems to have some possibilities, possibly talking about lost glories.
It would probably depend on where each of them was in their personal timelines.

Light Yagami (Death Note)/The Devil (Sinfest)
-I haven't read a lot of Sinfest, but I've got the impression the Devil there is fairly
mild-mannered, which means Light would scare the Hell out of him.

Claude Monet (painter)/Rufus (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure)
-The scary part is, this is entirely possible within Bill and Ted continuity.

Lyra Belacqua (His Dark Materials)/Ashton (Star Ocean 2)
-Good God. Poor Ashton would be even more doomed then usual.

Cleopatra/Hercules (HtLJ)
-Wait, isn't that canon?

Media (American Gods)/Wonder Woman
-.....Y'know, I can see how this could be mind-boggling cool, but only if a writer like Rucka or Gaiman was writing it..

Mamoru (Sailor Moon)/Bubbles (Powerpuff Girls)
-...I dont think he's into girls that young.

Captain James T Kirk/Barbossa (PotC)
-OK, my brain is officially broken. G'night all.</div>
