{"id":7031,"date":"2019-03-03T01:45:15","date_gmt":"2019-03-03T01:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/classicaldifference.com\/?p=7031"},"modified":"2021-10-25T22:20:56","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T22:20:56","slug":"good-employee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicaldifference.com\/good-employee\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Employee"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Employers Don\u2019t Need Data to Know: A Good Employee Is Hard to Find<\/h1>\n<p>BUT THE DATA DOES BACK THEM UP.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a compilation of various sources discussing today&#8217;s educational needs and shortcomings.<\/p>\n<h2>Google Study Results<\/h2>\n<p>In a previous article entitled <a href=\"\/google-good-employees\/\">&#8220;Google &#8216;Good Employees&#8217;,&#8221;<\/a> we mentioned Google\u2019s \u201cProject Oxygen\u201d which concluded that the following are the most important qualities of top employees:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Being a good coach<br \/>\n\u2022 Communicating and listening well<br \/>\n\u2022 Possessing insights into others (including others\u2019 different values and points of view)<br \/>\n\u2022 Having empathy toward and being supportive of one\u2019s colleagues<br \/>\n\u2022 Being a good critical thinker and problem solver<br \/>\n\u2022 Being able to make connections across complex ideas<\/p>\n<p>Forbes, Harvard, and even the NEA are acknowledging that something is missing from the prevailing educational framework.<\/p>\n<h2>Google Study Overviews<\/h2>\n<p><em>The Washington Post<\/em> (2017) stated, &#8220;Project Oxygen shocked everyone by concluding that, among the most important qualities of Google\u2019s top employees, STEM expertise comes in dead last. The top characteristics of success at Google are all soft skills.&#8221; These are the skills listed above.<\/p>\n<p>It went on to say, &#8220;\u2026 No student should be prevented from majoring in an area they love based on a false idea of what they need to succeed. Broad learning skills are the key to long-term, satisfying, productive careers. Released early in 2019, this book offers food for thought about what to do with a college education.<\/p>\n<p>This book was preceded by his popular article in Forbes entitled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/georgeanders\/2015\/07\/29\/liberal-arts-degree-tech\/#638d6f8a745d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThat &#8216;Useless&#8217; Liberal Arts Degree Has Become Tech&#8217;s Hottest Ticket.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>See <em>The Classical Difference<\/em> article, <a href=\"\/lean-out-or-lean-in-liberal-arts-as-a-path-to-leadership\/\">&#8220;Lean Out or Lean In.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>NEA and the &#8220;Four Cs&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>The NEA\u2019s \u201cAn Educators Guide to the \u2018Four Cs\u2019 \u201d says, \u201cUsing the \u2018Four Cs\u2019 to engage students is imperative. As educators prepare students for this new global society, teaching the core content subjects\u2014math, social studies, the arts\u2014 must be enhanced by incorporating critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/assets\/docs\/A-Guide-to-Four-Cs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.nea.org\/assets\/docs\/A-Guide-to-Four-Cs.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The question is, can the \u201c4 Cs\u201d be internalized and applied to real life when all that is truly meaningful&#8211;the idea of Truth itself&#8211;is dismissed? As soon as today\u2019s youth encounter difficulty, they often steer clear, and if they encounter the ultimate evil&#8211;someone who disagrees with them&#8211;their best intentions lack a firm foundation and often fall to the wayside. What kind of educational framework can or cannot lay a firm foundation for critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity?<\/p>\n<h2>John Taylor Gatto: Advice from Harvard: 10 Skills for Success in the Global Economy<\/h2>\n<p>John Taylor Gatto was named New York State Teacher of the Year. After resigning, he became a well-known secular activist against compulsory education.<\/p>\n<p><em>A few years back, the School of Government at Harvard issued advice to those planning a career in the global economy of the future; it said that school credentials would be devalued compared to real world skills acquired by experience; it identified 10 qualities to acquire to meet the changing standards, none of which are usually found stressed by public schooling:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>1. Ability to define problems without a guide.<br \/>\n2. Ability to ask questions that challenge common assumptions.<br \/>\n3. Ability to work without guidance.<br \/>\n4. Ability to work absolutely alone.<br \/>\n5. Ability to persuade others that yours is the right course.<br \/>\n6. Ability to debate issues and techniques in public.<br \/>\n7. Ability to re-organize information into new patterns.<br \/>\n8. Ability to discard irrelevant information.<br \/>\n9. Ability to think dialectically.<br \/>\n10.Ability to think inductively, deductively, and heuristically.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230; stimulating intellectual challenges is part of the time-honored formula of classical education&#8211;repudiated by institutional forced compulsion schooling that seeks a different end-result. \u2026 How could schools even function if children were encouraged to challenge prevailing assumptions?
