"Upon the Moors, Beneath the Stars"

Once, when he still had been a Book of Prophecy but the Prophecy had yet to be made known to him, Vinculus had had a name--a different name.

He did not remember what the Name had been; his Mother had called him by the Name, and the Name had been his, and his alone, when nothing else on his person had.

Then the Magic in him had spoken louder than Mother's voice, so he had gone wandering, adrift, until on a fair moonlit night the young man he had been had disrobed, in a glade beneath strange, unnamed stars, and an old gentleman with eyes of Longing and Wisdom had read him, tracing the old King's old Words by hand and mouth on his young skin, reading the Prophecy to him and giving him his Destiny and his Name anew: Vinculus, for his Body and his Spirit were to be for ever bound to the King's old, old Magic--or at any rate for as long as the King pleased.

The old gentleman had died not long afterwards; and Vinculus, burdened by his Name and guided by the Magic, had been cast back into the world.

It hadn't been entirely unpleasant.

His wives, bless 'em, had each of them been poor, simple things, who could not read and could not have known a Book if it had gone and bedded them--which of course it had. The blue words etched on Vinculus's skin had been nought to them, but the queer fancy of the man they had taken as their own.

All that had been, oh, long ago, in the old world.

Vinculus in that world had been a Book of Magic and a Book of Prophecy; now the Prophecy had come to pass and the Magic had been done: and the bright blue words in his skin had changed, much like a page being turned.

At night he dreamt dreams of a silent, cold moor; of Death; of snow falling and Malice walking--of a young, old, beautiful man coming to him through the Darkness.

Vinculus knew who the man was, of course; but it mattered not, because the man like he himself had no Name by which to be called and therefore, would come by no other will but his own.

The man's fingertips were soft, yet chilly, and the wind played upon his long dark hair, making it fly about his perfect, handsome face as if ravens' wings were beating around him.

Some times the beautiful, old, young man would talk to Vinculus, and his voice like rain rewrote history on Vinculus's body and on the body of England, and it sounded to Vinculus as though he spoke to him in thunders.

Vinculus would wake up then, but gently; and the thunder was no thunder at all, but the steady, peaceful beating of a man's heart--and the man upon whose heart Vinculus had been dreaming was not young nor beautiful, nor yet so old: he had a name of his own and his own magic, and his long dark hair was not the silken, raven-like hair of the King; upon the contrary it was often untamed and bedraggled and, more often than not, smelling of earth, of rain; which felt just right on Vinculus's skin, when the man bent close--closer--to read him.

Vinculus himself could not read; but when he put his own fingers in return on John Childermass's face, when he traced the swift silvery scar that ran from eye to mouth, the still faintly gleaming Words the King had placed upon Childermass's eyelids--to Truly See--Childermass's lips--to Truly Speak--Childermass's heart--to Truly Understand what was Seen and Spoken--it felt then to Vinculus as though new Words were blossoming inside him and inside Childermass as well; Words that Vinculus, and Vinculus alone, could read--the only ones.

All thoughts of Death and Terror would fade, then; the cold snowy moor dissolved; the King smiled knowingly in the warm Darkness--and while the watery first light of Rising Dawn stole over them from Fleeing Night, as he listened to Childermass breathe easy and safe in his sleep, Reader holding his Book close even in slumber (and was that not the proper way for things to be? For how could a Book be a Book, indeed, had it no-body to be read by--and held by--and cherished by), it seemed to the man the world had known as Vinculus that all the old bindings were coming undone, pages caught and made fly about, free and unmoored, in the wild wind made by the Raven's great wings; that some where, some time, a young, old, beautiful man spoke in a voice like the gathering of clouds and the blooming of Spring, rewriting the world anew

--bright blue, like ink on a page, like a new scar from a long ago battle, like the clear sky over York

--it sounded to him like a Name

--and when he pressed his own heart to his Reader's, arms and legs entwined like branches and roots in a forest, mouths parted but close, closer, like rivers flowing and earth moving and secrets being found

--he knew that Name for his own.

and bid thee welcome to my heart.

Also, this list of make-up tutorials and this other one might come in handy if you--like me--are fascinated by the colourful, fun world of make-up but haven't the first clue as to how to apply it to your own face. (The girl has my same skin/eye colour, so I find her tutorials pretty useful. She also sounds very sweet and nice. The guy is terribly skilled and clear in his explanations, too... and he sounds like a total doll. <3 )

Day 03, I'm going with a book that's also a fanfic: My Dearest Holmes by Rohase Piercy. It's a gorgeously written novel in Sir Conan Doyle's style, with a perfect Watson voice, dealing with a new case and unveiling what really happened when Holmes faked his death. It's slash, AND it could totally be canon.

Also: why isn't this movie out yet? :P

Day 02, here's my pictures (two of them: both taken by me during vacations this year).

The ruins of the castle in Breno, in the Alps (northern Italy). The first building dates back to the 1100s. It's so huge and vast and so sad, the powerful grey stone walls enclosing only grass and the rare pine tree (and nowadays, a few picnic tables). It's also gorgeous and breath-taking.

That's the Karersee lake, also in northern Italy. It's really small, but the water looks so impossibly blue and green that it makes my heart skip a beat. One of the prettiest alpine lakes I've ever seen.

You know how I said Russell T. Davies was probably a nice guy?

He actually kinda is a class A a**hole, apparently.

Disclaimer: I'm sure Mr Russell T. Davies is a nice guy and I'm not at all saying he hasn't the right to do his job and express his creativity in any way he deems fit. I'm merely expressing my own right to be pissed off and judgmental and, well, petty. Feel free to point and laugh and/or get mad accordingly.

So. With that out of the way...

I've been watching the new Torchwood while it aired in the UK, and although at first I was disappointed with the whole '~~rocks~~ aliens fall, ~~everyone~~ most people including Ianto omg die' storyline, I thought I wasn't as bothered as a lot of other fans were.

Guess I was just letting it stew, after all, because the more I think about it, the more upset I feel. But really, not just upset about this show in particular, or even these characters: it's more of a general feeling of disappointment, so to speak--one more instance of being let down by The Powers That Be, even when said Powers are supposed to come, well, from a fannish background, or at the very least to be closer to their fan base than others.

Thing is, from the posts I've read it would appear Mr Davies over the past year or so went around telling Jack/Ianto fans that they would be 'very happy' with the CoE storyline, and seriously... is he that much of a jerk? Or just plain clueless? If I wanted to give him the benefit of doubt, I'd go for option #2 and say he's still just a typical fanboy, albeit a gay one, and death and destruction and things going 'splodey still trump, for him, romance and character developement.

Because, Ianto being dead aside (and the whole internalised homophobia thing aside... Ok, so those are huge asides, just bear with me, plz), I can't but wonder about the Hub: what's happening down there, with the Rift-controlling thingy gone? Did Myfawny the pterodactyl survive the explosion? What about the Weevils and other assorted creatures in the cells? What about Grey and the other bodies ~~fridged~~ kept in stasis? All of the Rift-related artifacts that had been collected, catalogued and stored and, in short, all of the things that had been IMPORTANT PLOT POINTS (read: THE WHOLE PREMISE of the whole show) until CoE?

Many people in fandom seem to think that maybe RTD just didn't want anyone else to play with his creation once he buggered off to the States, so he utterly destroyed it on purpose--and if that's so, I hope nobody's gonna say anymore that he is okay with fans and fanfiction and transformative works in general, because clearly he's SO not.

And that, as I said, is really the thing that upsets me the most: that after all, even when the creator/writer/producer is supposed to be himself a fan, and therefore he's supposed to 'get it'... he really doesn't. Ego and money are what he cares about the most, not the stories he tells, the things he can make fans feel through those stories. I realise it's just terribly naive to expect otherwise, to expect that things will change in the way TV is made. Really stupid of me, I know. (Well, I'm sure with CoE his ego got stroked enough by critics, but as for the rest? Critics aren't the ones who're going to spend their money on the DVDs, the novels, the action figures--so, way to go, there.)

Anyway, I hope that a) pissed off fans will stop with the death threats and all that other horrid things they've been aiming both at RTD and people involved with the show already, because really, that's so wrong and stupid and JUST PLAIN WRONG; and b) he does well in the States, because we sure as hell need more gay/bisexual/queer characters in mainstream TV and movies. And maybe he'll grow even more as a writer and stop killing off characters left and right for cheap shock value.

I'm just not going to hold my breath.

Five Things That Might've Happened to Sean (And One That Always Did)

On the morning of his 50th birthday, in that time between sleep and waking where nothing makes sense and everything does as never before (nor after), Sean dreams.

In his dream, in a sort of bizarre Dickensian twist, he gets to live his life--several times over.

Once, he turns into the stubborn bastard everyone thinks he is by rejecting RADA and staying married to Deb. In the process, he breaks his own heart and then hers when he starts getting jobs he doesn't care for--and then he starts drinking--and then he starts sleeping around--and then he can't stop and doesn't even try to. He can't remember how the rest of that life goes, and he's glad. He's glad to let it go from him.

Another time, he lucks out and gets to actually try out for the effin' Blades, and he scores and he's brilliant all around and he's in, he's fucking in, he gets to play and be a football star and he never marries and then--then, some drunken bastard barrels right into the side of his car one night after practice, and he turns out mostly okay after the doctors manage to restart his heart, but his leg doesn't. And that's it: career over. He goes back to his dad's welding shop after that, and mostly he only remembers thinking, year after year after year: they shouldn't have bothered.

Yet another time, and he gets into the whole acting thing as a way of coping after his first wife dumps him, but he's not good enough for RADA, just a few plays and a commercial for a local store here and there and, anyway, nobody really cares; not even him. He sort of drifts from job to job--and from wife to wife--like he's looking for something, but his heart isn't in it. It goes on like that. He's relieved when he feels this one slip away.

Another go 'round and he gets into acting at school, and he's good at it, he's damn brilliant at it, so much so that he decides Europe's too small for him, and it's big movies with big names, one after the other, with his own name getting bigger and bigger on the advertising posters. Life's just perfect, even though Mel and the girls can't handle it, but he's just so busy all the time; so busy that when his agent tells him about how he laughed off some Kiwi guy with a pet fantasy movie project ("What, they think you're David fucking Bowie now?"), he's reading a new script and he barely pays attention. The rest of that life's not half bad, really. Just--half.

And again: he's a well-respected Shakespearean actor with a good career and a messed up marriage record, but New Zealand's beautiful and he's always loved the books, and besides Boromir is just the right amount of messed up and good that resonates deep within him, so he can even tolerate the youngsters and their tiresome shenanigans and the insane hours because, after all, he's as far away from his soon-to-be-ex wife as he can be. Except he doesn't know whatever the hell went through Peter's head when he cast this new Aragorn, because in just how many ways can someone be a crazy self-absorbed immature madman between one take and the next? Too fucking many to put up with, he decides in the end, and rather than let it slip through and make Boromir into a resentful jerk--he quits. When he boards the plane back to London, he still manages, somehow, to leave his heart behind. He doesn't think he ever gets it back.

In the moment before he wakes, before everything fades away like memories he's never made--or thoughts he's yet to think--the clarity of sense of it all strikes him, and he knows: all the things that did or didn't happen, that he made or made not happen, the good and the bad and the accidents... all these things could or couldn't have been, but there's this one moment, this single bright moment in which he never fucks up, in which the choice is always right and the randomness of the universe astoundingly perfect, and he can feel it as though it's happening just now...

...the moment in which, during a vacation in Denmark, or an art exhibit in New York, or a script reading in LA, or in a bar on a dark and stormy evening on the other side of the world, or at an award-reunion-thing years after New Zealand is only a memory of happiness and friendship, in between one marriage and the next, he follows a hunch--Deb would've said he followed his heart--and when he (absurdly/suddenly/shockingly/happily/gratefully) finds himself with an armful of (drunk/intense/frustrated/brave/happy) Viggo, he finally--finally...

He finally holds on.

And that--on the morning of his 50th birthday--is when Sean wakes.

I just baked a cake after years, and my very first chocolate cake ever, at that. I believe it's called a 'Deep Dark Chocolate Truffle Cake'... which of course tells you lots about me (recipe found here).

Lots of people rescue dogs and cats. Our family? We're all about birds.

A couple of pictures, as proof:

This little guy is Minù. My sister's boyfriend rescued him from being eaten by stray cats in the park near his workplace when Minù was a wee brown thing no bigger than my thumb, and he's been with us ever since (around 4 years, give or take), all the time getting greener and yellower and louder. When he hears people talking, he has to join in--and then you can't hear yourself anymore, he's that loud in his chirpiness. ^_^

This other fellow, it's probably a girl, but who can say for sure. It's decided that the perfect place to make its nest is the rafters under our roof, on the stairs right outside our door. It used to be swallows, once upon a time, but this year it's the little brown dude--turns out it's a far more thoughtful guest, as swallows are really noisy buggers and poop all over the place and get kind of hostile once the swallowlings have hatched, making it difficult for us to go in and out the door. So, welcome, new dude/-ette!

Also, I have a new camera I need to play with. Could you guess? ;)
