Interesting article, and I agree that The Bone Temple is definitely a great metaphor for society’s increasing radicalisation and extremism. However, despite its American director, I have to disagree that it is coming at this theme from the point of view of ‘American collpase’. Its British setting and themes (e.g. with the Jimmies) make it more of a metaphor for an increasingly isolated and nationalistic post-Brexit Britain (hence the virus having been pushed back from the European mainland, as noted in 28 Years Later). Danny Boyle himself has even said that the film can be interpreted as an allegory for Brexit.

Unfortunately, I think the fact that an American can intepret this film as being about the state of their own country really goes to show how bad the state of the world is, that radicalisation, fascism, populism etc really is that far-reaching and on the rise at the moment that it’s affecting life for many of us.

Saw this film at AFF and thought you nailed it with this review! “Smith has taken the traditional buddy movie, leaned heavily into the likes of Midnight Cowboy, and has come away with a fresh take on the genre. The Caiden character certainly exudes flyover-country naivety, but he’s both likable and easy to root for. Krumholtz uses his “curmudgeon comedy” to full effect, and the work is better for it.

Forelock swims in somewhat familiar waters, but with strong lead performances, a witty script, and a solid production, this is a movie that audiences will surely enjoy.”

It looks like there is at least one scene missing from the “original cut”. It was written about in Video Watchdog #13 and has “Reese” pleading to the court to spare his life after he was convicted.

I recently saw a screener of this and I have to agree – this film totally delivers. Action fans have EVERYTHING they need here to have a good time. It’s surprisingly emotional and really well written for an Adkins film. His scripts are usually weak but this one really stands out as solid and the story supports the truly amazing action!
