30_breathtakes theme #25 - singing voiceWhen he proposed that Severus sing to the plant, he didn’t expect the Potions Master to take him seriously. Severus’ extensive potions research had led to many unusual endeavors, but this one was the most difficult of them all. The dittany—whose flowers were a vital ingredient in the experimental potion—refused to bloom. Severus had exhausted all his leads to no avail.
Harry, thinking he was the pinnacle of wit, jokingly suggested that he sing to it, as a mother would to a fussy child.
So when he found Severus in the temporary greenhouse they’d erected behind their quaint cottage, Harry was more than awed.
Severus didn’t seem to notice Harry, engrossed as he was in his task. He was seated on the greenhouse floor, the potted dittany cradled in his lap, fingers casually stroking its thin stem. He hummed a tune that Harry had never heard before, but was beginning to grow fond of due to Snape’s smooth baritone.
The dittany remained obstinately still through Snape’s valiant efforts, a simple and morose piece that was somehow so characteristic of him.
Severus heaved a disgruntled sigh, still unaware of Harry’s presence, and set the dittany on the dirt floor. Harry, by force of sheer luck, cast a Disillusionment Charm on himself just as Severus swept a furtive look around the greenhouse.
Skeptically, Severus started, “Soul, surrendering your soul…”
The dittany quivered at the sound.
“The heart in you not whole…” Severus sang, hauntingly poignant.
It started swaying to the light rhythm, from side to side as Severus regarded it with that gratified gleam in his eyes.
“For love, but love walked on, cast into the dawn… branded with the mark…”
He watched as the plant’s leaves tentatively unfurled, revealing lavender petals.
“Oh, shame of Cain…”
Harry smiled, and left.
