I torqued my knee running yesterday. I really hope it gets better soon because I would like to get back to running. Yeah, I'm just as shocked as you are by that statement. Fortunately Tuesday is not run day anyway, so I'm going to try swimming laps and hope for the best.

"Ha ha! Mommy said torque. Torque is funny. Torque! Torque Torque Torque!"

OP had her first race on Saturday! She did better than expected, in that she didn't burst into a screaming pile of tears. She didn't do as well as hoped, however, because people were in costumes and people in costumes are just plain wrong in her world. She ran/walked some of it, but daddy had to carry her through most of the 200 meter route. We kept trying to put her down as the people and costumes thinned out and she would freak out and go back in Daddy's arms. At the end, where everyone was watching and we thought she wouldn't run, she ran the last 15 feet crossing the finish line! And she wasn't last. We were aiming for last. We'll definitely sign her up for another one at soon.

And yes, we kept trying to put her down even though she was not happy about it. Grandpa was definitely not happy that we kept trying. But here's the thing, and you can totally disagree, it was important to us that we kept trying. She wasn't screaming. She wasn't being hurt. She wasn't saying no. She was scared because of the costumes and because it was so new, but Mommy and Daddy were there to protect her the whole time. She went on the ground, turned around, and was reassured that Daddy would pick her up in a heartbeat. In the end, for that last bit of course, she smiled as Daddy held her hands and she ran to Mommy. She had found a little bit of confidence and got praise and kisses for her efforts. Hopefully she started to learn just how strong a person she can be. I am very proud of her.

"Yeah, yeah. Blah blah blah, mommy. Blah blah blah."

"I lost everyone I loved. And then they locked me away. With no where to hide from the pain."

Last week, the Husband and I had a date night. I know! It's crazy! We decided to do dinner and then go see Sucker Punch in the theater. Then we saw the reveiws and the hemming and hawwing commenced.

"But Mommy, why would you spend time away from me?"

Here's the thing, we watch a lot of crap. I mean, Dead or Alive, anyone? We like crappy movies and tend to just not like the Oscar winners. That said, in our post-OP world, we don't want to waste our time or money. So when the critics talked about how awful this movie was, mentioning all the rape and exploitation, I got nervous. Did I want to be stuck in a room for 2 hours after paying a bazillion dollars to watch a movie that I was going to hate and feel uncomfortable through? Not really. At least if we rented it at home, I can leave the room or we can stop the movie.

In the end we decided to go through with it. I'm really glad we did, because I actually liked the movie.

There was no rape of note in the movie. It was alluded to, yes, but not much more of that. In fact, what I've read in the reviews is not really the movie I saw. Either I'm interpreting it with rainbows and sunshine or these people are idiots. Probably a little bit of both.

The beginning of the movie was a, well, a music video synapses of why Baby Doll was put in an asylum.

Btw, can I get a shout out to Brattleboro, VT! You made it to the movies!

Anyway, in the little video mom dies and step-dad hones in on some icky love of a pedophilia kind. Here's the thing, I got the sense that he had been molesting Baby Doll for some time. Now that mamma is dead and Baby Doll is old and fighting back, he decides to punish her by going after um...the unnamed sister who is unnamed because Baby Doll sort of accidentally kills her in trying to save her. Oops. We all do make mistakes.

Then off to VT for pretty leaves and assylums we go where ee-vil step dad pays a little something on the side to have all his problems ended with a lobotomy. Cue the montage of Baby Doll's week of therapy, therapy, and um...therapy. Then off to Mad Men's Mr. Draper for a lobotomy! In the moment of hitting the nail into her eyeball, we are suddenly transported to brothel land.

I've read all sorts of things about this transition from confusion to it's her coping with the lobotomy. My interpretation is this is a flashback. It's the week after she's been dropped off and she's seriously broken from killing her sister and she's coping. Really, isn't therapy just an intimate performance where you bare your soul and someone looks at your more squishy bits (metaphorically of course). The dancing, which we never see, is not literally dancing. Baby Doll's coping mechanism makes it dancing, but it is representing fits, rages, or violent outbursts. That would be why everyone is so mesmerized. They're trying to stop her in reality.

As I said, I liked this movie. Maybe I'm reading to far into it. Maybe it really is crap, but who cares. It made me think about and analyze it. It reminded me a lot of anime, and not just because of the costumes, but because you have to figure out what the hell is really going on. Evangelion, anyone? I mean really, what the hell was going on at the end of that anime?

Let's start with a station message first, shall we? For those of you who know my real life info, please don't mention personal specifics in the comments. A few have things have been mentioned, and while I screen them as soon as I can, the info is still out there for a bit and I'd prefer the informaiton be kept private.

Right now we're watching the Young Avengers. It's cute. Set in the future, the children of the old avengers fight against some evil guy. Standard plot, but cute. I have to say, it's no Phineas and Ferb, my newest addiction. OP enjoys watching it too. Or at least, I've decided she does. Usually, she's playing while I'm laying on the couch whimpering that I don't want to read the same book 30,003,320 more times. Please, don't make me OP!

The worst part about my daughter's love of books is, well, she's her Daddy. She's stubborn. If she doesn't like a book, she pushes it away and says, "No." So we end up reading the same few books over and over and over. I have Dr. Seuss's ABC book pretty much memorized. Seriously. You are kept up at night because that Lady Gaga song is stuck in your head? I stay up because Jerry Jordan's jelly jar and jam begin that way. It may slowly be killing me. At least she reads. Right?

Right?

It's been a rough winter. Work has been crazy busy and we've all been sick. Again. Last Tuesday all three of us were on antibiotics. I had an ear infection, OP had an ear infection, and the Husband had what we had, but caught it early. I had gotten up to a 30:10 5k on the treadmill before getting sick. Today, I went on the elliptical machine and almost passed out. I think tomorrow may be weights and a walk. Hopefully I'll get to running next week. If we're lucky, the warm weather will put an end to the sick, I'll get some projects done at work (ha!), and things will start getting more manageable.

At least the child can clean. Sort of...

Last week was a rough one for OP. You can read about it in detail at the knitting blog if you like. To sum it up, she had an allergic reaction to drugs, a fever, and was miserable. All week we dithered about our weekend. See, for Hanukkah the Husband reserved a room in northern Vermont for the two of us. We had a fire place, reading area, whirlpool tub, and massages. It was going to be AWESOME. Except it was the weekend after the daughter's drama.

I really really needed that weekend, but I couldn't in good conscience go away when the daughter was miserable. We almost canceled, but Friday morning OP, who is the best child ever, woke up fine. Rash gone. Fever gone. Perky and happy and full of energy. Grandma and grandpa pretty much forced us out and I'm so glad they did. It was the best weekend we've had in a long time and that massage was exactly what my poor back needed. Of course my back is back to screwed up and in pain, and I'm back to struggling to stand up straight thanks to being pregnant with OP, but I had 24 hours where my back felt so light and normal. Maybe I need to do more massages?

I just came back from a weekend away with the Husband and no child. While away, ljshootout posted the last poll of the season. The finals. I somehow made it to the finals? Anyway, you get only one vote so make it a good one. Vote for the best photos, don't just vote for someone you know. Believe me, I know I should take second in this and cerebralpig should get first even though I'm not liking the composition on the shell photo, but the color is amazing. So maybe I could be good enough to win. Go, look at all the entries and vote for the person who has the best photos for the week. Although maybe it's community only. What do I know? But still, go look and vote if you can FOR THE BEST PHOTOS, not the people in them.

Btw, in the last post when I said, "but I don't expect to make it to the bottom two." I meant the final two. I fully expect to be in the bottom soon. This contest has given me more confidence as a photographer, but I'm also realistic. There are better photographers left. I have sent an email out to a local eatery that has a gallery with my portfolio. I haven't heard back and plan to email this week to verify that they received the email. Either way, I'm very proud of myself that I sent the inquiry. I'm now looking at other local places in the event this one falls through, which I suspect it will.

Remember when I wrote on Wednesday that we had a tentative walker in the house and that probably by the end of the month she'd be pretty much walking? And then I realized that the end of the month was fast approaching and that maybe that target date was over-reaching? Yeah, not so much. That night she walked about 6 feet on her own. Then on Friday, while home sick for her second ear infection, she ran. She's pretty much walking non-stop. She still crawls but opts to walk most of the time at home. Not sure what she'll do at day care with more children about.

Have you been watching the LJ shootout voting this week?!? It's a very tight race this week. I'm very happy to be in the top 4, but I don't expect to make it to the bottom two. There is some amazing talent there.

That's all you get for today. It's time for the gym and I need the break from this annoying app I'm building. Stupid logic.

"But mommy, why do you need logic when there is food?"

Comma Queen

Oy vey on a knish. What a day. I'm ready for a nap or something, but at least my office at work is clean.

We have a walker in the house. No, not the type of walker that the Husband used after his accident, but a real-life, 13 month old walker. OP started on New Year's eve with a sort of "OMG I'm going to fall but it's only two steps so I'm going for it AUGH!!!!!!" walk. She'd go the two steps from couch to chair for example, and sort of fall into the walk and hope for the best. Over this past weekend, she began taking deliberate steps (up to 6!) that were much more controlled and confident. I suspect by the end of the month she'll be mostly walking. Wait, that's only 1 1/2 weeks, so maybe not then.

She will run, mind you, if you are holding onto her hands. She is her father's daughter that way.

"Silly Mom. I have no need to walk when you will carry me wherever I want to go."

I am really enjoying parenthood. I have days, don't get me wrong, but there are days for everything. OP is a bundle of joy and this age is so much fun. I love watching her figure out communication which basically is just say no to everything or reach for what you want. You can see the little wheels turning in her head and you can see that evil glint in her eye. That same glint her father has when he's up to no good. And she is an excellent dancer!

I keep thinking to this time last year, when I had a one-month old. A one-month old! Can you believe it!?! Now I have a 13-month old. Or a baby who is just over 1 year. I always meant to write more here about the experience, but it just never happened. I don't think I will revisit it, and I'm not going to promise that I will do better. It is what it is. Life is busy. Work is busy. I will write when I can and you will suffer through it! So there. I will continue to write on the knitting blog as well and we'll see how it all pans out in the end.

In the meantime, put a song on for OP, preferably a booty shaking song, and start dancing. She will be out there, joining you while you shake your groove thang.

It doesn't matter what I make, but it's the possibilities of so much knitting that makes me happy.

Camera: Cannon Rebel XT
Shutter speed: 1/200 sec
f-stop: 3.5
ISO: 400
Date: 1/13/2011
Processing: Minor sharpening to counter-act resize.

Continuing the knitting theme is a new cup holder I made to enjoy my tea at work in a too-hot-to-hold cup.

Camera: Cannon Rebel XT
Shutter speed: 1/200 sec
f-stop: 5.0
ISO: 800
Date: 1/13/2011
Processing: Minor sharpening to counter-act resize and a smidge of contrast.

Needless to say he will be destroying Tokyo soon.

Camera: Cannon Rebel XT
Shutter speed: 1/40 sec
f-stop: 4.0
ISO: 400
Date: 12/26/2010
Processing: none

And of course, knitting. Every year, the college where I work closes down the week between Christmas and New Year. Normally I clean a bit and knit a lot, but this year that didn't happen as much as I spent a lot of the time helping my sister. I did, however, get some knitting in.

Camera: Cannon Rebel XT
Shutter speed: 1/160 sec
f-stop: 4.5
ISO: 800
Date: 1/03/2011
Processing: none

I'm back from visiting my sister down South and while I have pictures to post and things to talk about, that will have to wait for the moment. I've started pondering the idea of trying to get some of my photos up in a local gallery. I mean, I don't know if any gallery would actually consider my photos, but why not, right? Anyway, I don't know anything about the business of the art of photography. I mean, do I have to number the photos? Must they be unpublished online? If I sell a photo (ha!) can I never show it again? How does that all work? Does anyone know or know of a place I can look online for info? I'd prefer not to sell on Etsy at the moment, but rather consider something more tangible. That, of course, may change.

Can you believe Tuesday it will be a year!?! That photo is what I looked like this time last year and now my Sister is either in or just out of surgery for her very own c-section. Three cousins born within a year and all 3 are breach babies. Crazy, crazy, crazy.

So OP's party went really well. We tried to keep things simple by having it at her grandparent's temple. That way we didn't have to clean or anything in advance and everyone was in one big room so they could enjoy OP. I think it worked. I think it went really really well. OP is in a non-cupcake phase. She had cupcakes at her little daycare friend's birthday party two weeks ago but refused cupcakes at her holiday party and her own birthday party. So she had a scone. The best laid plans or some such. BUT she liked abookchick 's scones so she was very happy. Of course she did eat the frosting off of my cupcake.

I'm bringing leftover cupcakes to daycare on Tuesday for her birthday party and if she doesn't like them, she's up poo creek without a paddle.

We are all fighting some sort of cold. Every time we start feel better, the next day the cold laughs at us and says, no. *sigh*

I didn't want to have both pictures of the child, because while she's adorable and loves the camera, it felt so far in my comfort zone that it not only does my inner photographer take its shoes off, but clothes and underwear too and no one wants to see my inner photographer naked. Really, you don't. So instead, I thought I would get photos of the Husband and he obliged and it was awkward. He hates photos and I hate taking portraits, but I was going to grow as a photographer. I was going to step out of my photo box, jump, and fly.Except the phone rang. So as he talked to his mom, I started taking pictures of myself and had a blast. Here's the thing. I hate photos of myself. I don't see myself as pretty or even remotely attractive and I hate showing my flaws to the camera, but I find this picture to be almost liberating. You can see my flaws and all and there is still beauty in that.

Camera: Cannon Rebel XT
Shutter speed: 1/30 sec
f-stop: 5.6
ISO: 400
Date: 12/16/2010
Processing: panoramic processing of doom.

Then of course, I love this picture of OP (Optimus Prime - for those not in the know).

Camera: Cannon Rebel XT
Shutter speed: 1/640 sec
f-stop: 5.6
ISO: 200
Date: 11/28/2010
Processing: A bit of cropping.

I probably need to clarify a couple points from my San Francisco rant.

Point 1
"I am one cranky lady who hates hippies and puppy dogs and apple pie."
This is most important. I actually like apple pie. A lot. It's one of the few pies I actually like, if it's made well of course. At Thanksgiving, someone made an apple pie that I thought I heard good things about. It was quite awful--no flavor, dry. Yuck. I put that bit in as hyperbolic expression of my evils toward hippies. I also sort of like dogs too, but no one questioned that one. Weird.

Point 2
I didn't hate San Francisco as much as last time I went out, but I got distracted by my rant on the evils of hippies. And they are evil, people. I could see living there, but I don't know if I would want to. If that makes sense. I'm a NYC girl at heart. I love the energy, the buildings, the smells. No one gives a crap in NYC. They are rushed and harried and awesome. Hell, the place smells so bad, you could pass gas on the street and no one would notice! How can you not like that?

San Francisco is clean, light, and airy, but the energy is off. It's...I don't know if I can put my finger on it. It's snooty without the grit. It's ecological without the rampant disregard for people. It reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Maggie has to choose between her family or the Flanders at the end. As she looks at her biological family, it's dark, dirty, and scary. The people are monsters and it's just not a nice place to be. The Flanders are in the Sun, they look beautiful, and I think there are birds singing and deer dancing. She chooses the darkness because that's where her mom is. I guess maybe that's why I choose the darker, grittier NYC. That's where my mom was from so I have more of a connection. I love that city which is the antithesis of small town. San Francisco is small town personified in big city.

Point 3
I also never gave other reasons as to why I'm not fond of San Francisco. I said, "First of all, it's riddled with hippies." and never gave a second of all. The first time I went to San Francisco was September 2008. I found out I was pregnant the night before we left. 5 days into the trip, I wasn't. Now as Tony Bennett says, "I left my heart in San Francisco." I didn't leave my heart, but I left something else. I left the excitement and potential of adding a little one to your family and all I see in some neighborhoods, especially near Haight Ashbury, is such sadness that it's not a city I like to be in.

And yes, I acknowledge that a loss after 5 days isn't the same as a loss of 5 weeks or 5 months, but it still hurts and the city will always be an odd reminder of the sadness and utter confusion I experienced that week.

Of course, this trip, we all became sick thanks to Typhoid OP, so that did not help my view of the place.

"I think mommy will be very unhappy when I go through my hippie phase."

When polling starts, I will lock down membership, and whittle out any that seem to be dead journals (i.e., no updates, or haven't updated in over a year).

I think I officially hate panoramas. I am too much of a perfectionist to deal with things not being quite right and I had to do multiple shoots to get the images to work right. But it's done, so yay! This is a picture of my favorite indoor place on campus. I work at a beautiful college campus that has a pond, woods, and a lot of open spaces. It's also really, really, really cold right now and I'm a wimp. Instead I went to my favorite room in the science building. I love all the light, the open space, the names of scientists on the purple areas. It's just beautiful and I want the whole thing to be my office.

Click the image to see the larger version.

Camera: Cannon Rebel XT
Shutter speed: 1/20 sec
f-stop: 10
ISO: 800
Date: 12/10/2010
Processing: panoramic processing of doom.
