Munday - NaNo Time!
1. Are you doing NaNo this November? Why, or why not?
I have plans to, if only because I want to see if I can finish (or get closer to finishing) my last uncompleted NaNo project. I want another "uncompleted" story off my plate!
2. How do you feel about the challenge of writing a novel(la) of 50k words in a month?
Well, considering I've done this for -- holy crap, five years?! Six this year (not consecutively -- I skipped 2006 and 2011) -- I'm feeling pretty good about my chances. To be honest, the word count always looks scariest on the first day. After that, it starts getting easier.
3. If you have tried before, did you succeed? Fail? A bit of both?
I've won every year I've tried -- technically. I have this horrible habit of making word count, but not finishing the actual story. And of the stories I've written, "Secundus" was the only one I've finished in any reasonable amount of time.
4. What advice do you have to a would-be-novelist (NaNo or otherwise)?
Basically, don't be afraid of a shitty first draft. Almost everyone writes one. For NaNo, just concentrate on getting the words out onto the page. And write whenever you feel most comfortable writing. We all have our most creative times, so work with those as best you're able.
5. Are you a plotter that outlines everything ahead of time, or are you more into figuring it out as you go along?
It kind of depends on the story. With NaNos, however, I have a basic outline, but I allow for improvisation within that outline. Like with "Secundus" -- I had a timeline of what events should happen when, but I didn't plot out every last little thing that happened. I think keeping things a little loose allows you to keep your word count up.
6. What will your novel be about this year? Who are the characters? What is the plot?
I'm trying to finish up my last incomplete NaNo -- a multifandom fairytale crossover simply called "The Tale." It stars Doc, Marty, Jennifer, Victor, and Alice as various fairytale characters on an adventure to kill the dangerous Queen of Hearts. It's heavily inspired by a favorite webcomic of mine, No Rest for the Wicked. You can read more about "The Tale" here.
7. What NaNo support would you like to see
charloft offer?
Um -- I dunno. I'm kind of a lone wolf in NaNoing myself. . . Maybe Word Count Sundays? Where we can post progress and cheer each other on?
