Saturday God's Listening
Prayer is translation. A man translates himself into a child asking for all there is in a language he has barely mastered.
-Leonard Cohen
I -- hmm. Is Mr. Cohen suggesting that there's some sort of heavenly language? Because I've never really thought of there being one. My conception of God is of a being who understands all languages and can speak to you in whichever one you're most familiar with. Omnipotent, after all. There's no need for a heavenly language simply because everyone understands each other regardless of language boundaries. Which does fit into the translation conceit. . .
I'm probably just overthinking it. I don't pray often, I admit, although I do believe in God. Not Pastor Galswells's judgemental and angry God, though. I prefer Father Gale's loving and accepting one. (And I kind of like the idea I hear around the city sometimes -- that God's the ultimate Touched. Life can feel like a big science experiment sometimes.)
