(Last) Saturday - Avoiding The Past
It’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out. -- The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseni
Or, if you try to run away from it, it comes after you. I tried to run away from my past once -- after my parents died, I became catatonic because I simply couldn't find a way to deal with it. If I didn't exist, it didn't exist. But it did, and it wouldn't leave me alone no matter how much I tried. I ended up having to fight it in the end -- fight all the pain, the guilt, the horror that I'd tried to bury. Fortunately, I won, but I still get chills thinking about how things might have gone if I hadn't been so lucky.
Victor understands this too, I believe. He bolted from his past -- controlling parents, an arranged marriage he didn't want -- and what did it do? Follow him here. The past will simply not be ignored, as we've both found out. Fortunately, he's finally standing up and facing it. I'm rather proud of him for not caving into his parents' demands. And for handling the whole situation with Victoria with grace. (She is a nice girl, but I won't say I'm not relieved the whole arranged marriage thing fell through.)
