Munday To Tell The Truth
If you could compel your character to answer one question truthfully, what would it be, and why, and what would their answer be?
I actually thought up a question for Alice too, so you get a double feature!
Victor’s Question: You’re offered eternal youth, all the money you could ever need, and the guarantee of a comfortable life free from want – but to get it, you have to leave Secundus and never return, nor see anyone from there again. Do you take the offer?
The Reason: Victor had a few moments early on where Secundus felt like a bit of an ill-fit – are those really gone? And I know he’s been incredibly stubborn on not leaving the city at his parents’ request, but let’s face it – he knows that the life he’ll have if he leaves isn’t going to be as good as the life he’ll have if he stays. What happens if he’s given a real incentive?
Victor's Answer: "I won’t deny that it’s tempting. I don’t know if I really fear growing old, but being set financially for life again would be nice. But I couldn’t take the offer. My friends here are far more important to me."
Alice’s Question: Do you really think you would have been happy as a spinster? (Assuming, of course, you never fell in love with anyone besides Victor.)
The Reason: Alice was quite certain she’d live her life as an old maid before Victor came along. Hell, she was actively avoiding love, more or less. I’d like to know if she really believes she would have been happy never falling in love.
Alice's Answer: "I think I would have been at least mostly content with my life. I had friends before Victor – I wouldn’t have been completely alone. And I have two good jobs – one that pays well and affords decent company, and one that allows me to help keep people safe from monstrosities. I wouldn’t have been miserable. But I admit, I can’t see myself being as happy as I am with someone who loves me, and whom I love back."
