Munday: Racey Stuff

Today's topic can be a racy one.... race.

What's race like in your characters' world? Is your character white (or the equivalent privileged race in their society/culture), or a character of color? How has race shaped them? Are they conscious of racial and ethnic issues?

Do you as the writer make an attempt to address racial and ethnic issues in your portrayal? Why or why not?

Lucy's supposed to live more or less in a version of "our world," so race and ethnicity issues are pretty much like they are here. Lucy is white, natch, and grew up in firmly middle-class besides. She's had friends of all races, though, and she's a firm believer in equality and freedom for all. (She probably gets a lot of that from her mom, honestly -- Kim wanted her daughter to mix with all sorts of people so she didn't get too skewed a view of the world.) She's not one to judge based on skin color.

I covered in my talk about Secundus's race relations why I'm not quite comfortable dealing with that sort of thing. I don't want to do something stupid out of ignorance. With Lucy, it's also because the prejudice I'd want to cover, if anything, is more about gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. Lucy's sexuality comes up a lot more in her portrayal than her race.
