Saturday Noble Versus Impossible
Every noble work is at first impossible.
-Thomas Carlyle
I think I know what he means -- that everyone who's worked for a noble cause has met with resistance. Has been told, "You can't change the world. There's no point to what you're doing. It's impossible. You may as well give up."
Of course, I can't help but apply it to the things I see my friends doing -- in particular, Doc. He's working on a time machine, and even his fellow Touched have told him they're not sure it's possible! Apparently, nobody's yet come up with a way to travel through time without destroying the entire universe for the energy requirements. And they don't believe Doc's found a way that doesn't need that much power (though it does need a lot). When mad scientists see something as impossible -- well.
But Doc perseveres. He believes in his goal, and I admire him greatly for it. You might not think of time travel as a noble work, but Doc's often stated that he hopes to use it to help answer the questions of where we're going and why. He wants to solve the mysteries of history, and bring the future within reach. And yes, he wants to show them, show them all, but that's only a tertiary goal, really. However it goes, I'm proud to be a part of his dream.
