Twosday: Shifting Circles

Tonight, please list two times you exchanged your current social circle for a new one, and tell us why. (Moving, new job, witness protection, etc)

After I graduated from SFSU, I moved out of the Manor and into a one bedroom apartment in North Beach.  I was starting at the museum, and even though I was just Roger's assistant, his entire penchant for offloading research more or less built up my own ability to hold my own on art history.  Which was some kind of opening with the artsy types and aging beatniks who hung around the cafes and indie galleries in the neighborhood.  And it helped, obviously, that I just wanted to be out on my own.  It was a time when I had probably the broadest horizons in my life.  Oh, and even though my photography was really just a hobby at this point, that helped, too.  Friends from that period -- some I still consider good friends, and some of them became the contacts I took to Bucklands.

The relationship with Roger and our engagement brought me into the orbit of the Laurent family -- and Roger's clan travels where the air is pretty rarefied.  His brother and his cousins spent money like it was rainwater, and I guess it was the fact that, well, my sisters and I didn't grow up poor, but Grams did struggle to support us, and I always had an idea how much she did just to pay the bills, so that when I commented on how his family viewed money (bad idea I'll never repeat), it was a shock to hear him get very defensive.  Angry with me, even.  I could never relate to those people, and even after we started planning the wedding, I guess my coolness toward them, well, he didn't find it endearing.  And that was one "reason" he gave for ... whatever the hell he kind of pass he made at Phoebe.  Which he lied about.  I was glad to leave him and his whole family behind.
