Twosday: There But for the Grace of ... Who?
Twonight, please tell us TWO times you had a 'there but for the grace of' plot device arrive in the nick or (or at the worst possible!) time.
I'm in the middle of writing one, which will partially resolve the Underworld rivalry subplot. The baddie with the same power as my muses's sister has kidnapped my muse, and is in the process of pulling the power of her barely-conceived child out of her -- until the Big Bad, the one this baddie wants to usurp, summons her away. Who orchestrated that? Other baddies, specifically my muse's now-husband, Cole, and the head of their fraternal order -- after the latter was begrudgingly convinced by the former that my muse has some use and should be kept around.
It's all about showing my muse accepting a balance between standing up for herself and letting others work to protect her. And yeah, it's dark dark dark...
The other one occurred during the exposition, and though it was and will be important, it has only been mentioned in flashback: Cole, following his return to the Underworld, was trying to suppress his soul, and have his demonic side regain full control and strength. Halfway through the rituals, he is called before the Source to be told about the plot, his role, and the identity of the "target". Just in the flashback, I've shown some of the effect of that timing -- the shock he feels but can't show comes from his humanity, which wasn't fully suppressed. Shock at the plot, shock at its targeting Prue, and all the subsequent human emotions he has about the whole thing -- they're brought to you and me by that timing.
