Friday Phobias
From Therese
1. Pathophobia- The fear of disease. When I was ten years old in 1087, there was a great outbreak of the sudoración illness in my homeland of Ibonia. My mother was struck with the illness and it appeared that she would die from it. Thankfully she didn’t and she recovered but she continued to be weak from it for awhile.
2. Scotophobia- The fear of darkness. I wouldn’t say I was so much afraid of darkness as much as what it represents. When I was eight, I had a very strict tutor who locked me up in a broom closet when I refused to recite a Kontian poem. After my mother found out, she immediately fired him, but since then I have a been afraid of dark spaces.
3. Ophidiophobia- The fear of snakes. In the summer time, there are lots of snakes about. Ibonia was thick with them. My father had a weird fascination with them and he would bring them inside the palace for us children to inspect. My sisters and I hated them which made my father laugh.
4. Brontophobia- The fear of thunder. When I was eleven there was a great storm in the capital city. The thunder was so loud; I thought it would shake the palace down. It didn’t but since then I have hated thunder and storms in general.
5. Poinephobia- The fear of punishment. Though my parents were lenient rulers they put down any disobedience quickly and harshly. There was a charlatan that preached against my betrothal to my future husband, Henri. He said my parents were wrong for sending me to those despicable Mondians. My father had his tongue ripped out for spreading vicious lies. I feel as though I was somehow responsible for this. I know I shouldn’t, but the poor man had his tongue ripped out on account of my marriage. How could I not feel guilty?
