It was not, as people like to say, a choice between Farrah and Marce, or between Carlos and Darren. In a perfect world, I would have remained friends with all of them, somehow. We could have respected what we each stood for. The problem was that the lines got drawn.
"They turned your head," Carlos said accusingly to me years later. "You had to get caught up with their crazy ideas and fall for a dangerous woman."
I shook my head. "They woke me up."
"To what? To leaving us, that was what."
