Saturday Changing Myself

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

-Anatole France

Discuss. What changes have you made recently? Good changes? Bad changes? How do you feel about it?

Rather depressing quote, but I suppose there's a good amount of truth in it. You're never the same person after a change as before it. I know I've changed. I've gone from living in a small town to living in a big city; from obeying my parents to playing Igor to Doc; from being just a hobbyist entomologist to getting involved in all sorts of science. The Victor Van Dort of Secundus is a rather different person than the Victor Van Dort of Burtonsville.

I can't say I regret the way I've changed, however. I don't see it as a death so much as a -- metamorphosis. It's like butterflies: the me in Burtonsville was the caterpillar, and now I'm a butterfly. I've grown, I've evolved. (And I might not even be done yet. I might still be in the chrysalis. Who knows what the future may bring?) I may miss my old life of new money comfort, but everything I've gained from living here more than makes up for that.
